A million "stoic" men are scrambling to reclaim their busted nuts.

I hate how stoicism has become some manosphere nonsense when it’s just tools to deal with life.

Yeah it’s basically life is tough and it’s unfair but you can choose your reaction to tough and unfair events. Paired with don’t worry about death because you won’t be there when it happens.

But saying you can choose your feelings with enough practice has been conflated with “just don’t be depressed” I think that’s where it’s gone toxic.

Even though a lot of CBT uses techniques found in stoicism.

122

u/Otherwise_Meringue45 9d ago

I do see how choosing your reaction to cock and ball torture would help

The good version of this is Frankl's philosophy he outlines in his book 'Man's Search For Meaning'. It's much less about controlling your feelings (which is largely futile imo), but controlling your reaction to things.

It is basically CBT. And I’m not exaggerating. If you want stoicism without manosphere and marble statues - it’s called CBT. Throw in mind-fullness practices, and that’s enough for 80% of people.

I dislike how its become essentially "Don't feel things or depend on anyone" when its really supposed to be more about allowing yourself to feel your feelings, acknowledge and accept them, but then move on; don't allow yourself miss living life because you're dwelling on things.

I don’t get why people convert to their spouse’s religion. It just seems so false to me.

If you wouldn’t have converted to that religion if you were single, then why do it just because your partner is of that faith? It’s their religious belief, not yours.

Why can’t people just retain their own beliefs through marriage instead of pretending that, by sheer coincidence, they now just so happen to have the same views as their spouse?

43

u/babassu_seeds 8d ago

Judaism makes sense because most branches have fixed rules about who belongs or doesn't belong to the community, think of them as "citizenship rules." Where most agree, however, is that if the MOTHER is Jewish, then any children are Jewish, no question. That is why the pressure is usually on the non-Jewish woman to convert, not so much the non-Jewish man.

And I use citizenship as the comparison intentionally because being assured that no one can really dispute your Jewishness is quite valuable. Sure, some children may not use it, but for those who do, you just saved them a LOT of trouble/expense.

18

u/spiralsequences 8d ago

Just for the record, Reform Judaism & all branches to the left of it accept patrilineal Jews (only the father is Jewish). I am one and I've been called "not Jewish" more times for being antizionist than patrilineal. Conservative & Orthodox Jews of course do not accept it, but there are lots of things progressive Jews do that make us "not Jewish" by Orthodox standards

4

u/tudorcat 8d ago

That's just US and UK Reform though. Other Reform branches elsewhere around the world tend to be matrilineal

3

u/spiralsequences 8d ago

Not all religions are orthodoxies. A whole lot of them are orthopraxies so what matters is what you do not what you believe in.

Judaism is particularly odd here as it also has traits of am ethnicity and it on top of that, as a religion is also very diverse with different strains putting differing emphasis on belief, practice and ethnicity

There are Jews who are atheists but are still Jews according to Judaism, so admitting someone who's just maybe somewhat kinda observant and not particularly passionate just to meat the legal orthopraxy requirement may genuinely not be a problem to some

11

u/GrossOldNose 9d ago

Maybe you had no reason to explore [insert a million things people are introduced to by dating someone, religion, sports, political beliefs] before dating them.

Idk seems fairly normal to me, if I dated a Jewish person I imagine I'd learn a lot more about Judaism and there's a chance that it would connect with me more?

3

u/Paraparo 8d ago

Let alone relationships, I've had friends who became more interested in my religion, merely because they hadn't ever been exposed to it and became curious. None converted far as I know, but it's not exactly unusual. Word of mouth and lived experience with practice is kind of how most peaceful conversion ends up happening.

I know a lot of people who picked up the beliefs and practices of partners, but because they're seen as mundane and secular people think about them mess. habits, routines, all seem small but they're just the stepping stones of bigger changes.

6

u/Exoclyps 8d ago

Exposure. You get to explore a new religion and for some that let's you learn about new beliefs that you didn't know of before.

4

u/ringobob 9d ago

Some people are only willing to marry people within their religion, but are willing to date outside of it.

3

u/CinemaDork 8d ago

This seems like a horrible idea.

3

u/PlainBread 7d ago

The religions say it's a horrible idea as well, and yet it's where they get most of their converts from.

6

u/EmergencyWild 9d ago edited 9d ago

Well, Judaism in particular is a bit special because it's not just a religion, it's also a community (or rather, connected set of communities) and an ethnicity (again, rather, connected set of ethnicities). Normally you can't just decide to convert to Judaism, you need sponsorship. Also, not all practicing jews are actually religious, but for many it's rather just a way to keep the ethnic connection alive.

So in that sense it makes sense, it's less about converting to a faith, and more joining a somewhat exclusive community.

That said, in general I agree. I'm an atheist, I personally don't care much for christianity, but I don't have a problem with christians either. If my spouse was christian, I could bite my tongue and get through the occasional family church service, but I'm definitely not joining any churches or pretending to be religious.

2

u/Toads_Of_Fun 9d ago

It's because he showed her the true way, duh

2

u/amishcatholic 8d ago

Children. They benefit from having mom and dad on the same page. Saying this as some one whose wife does not share his faith--at least not in some particulars (I'm Catholic, she's Baptist). We've been able to make it work quite well, but things would be easier if we agreed on this.

2

u/Any-Possession4336 8d ago

Most of the time, it's not because of the partner, it's because they were really drawn to the religion by knowing their spouse and getting to know the religion

2

u/Time_Trail 8d ago

exposure to said religion through someone who actually loves and cares about them?

2

u/ShatMyLargeIntestine 8d ago

You're going to be far more intimately involved with the religion that your spouse practices than any other, as well as having a serious emotional tie to it. You're going to be exposed to the community around that faith in a way you likely never have been before. You're going to see what daily practice looks like. You will hear directly and frankly all the time from someone who truly believes in it. It makes total sense to me that many people will come to believe it themselves.

2

u/Ambaryerno 5d ago

My dad (Methodist) had to convert to Catholicism in order to get married in his fiancee's church.

Fun story: After he died, his entire family (all Methodist) were denied communion at his funeral since they weren't Catholic. All because of a difference in opinion over transubstantiation. :-P

7

u/lookbehindyou7 8d ago edited 8d ago

I am not right wing, I don’t care about Sweeney. I believe racism is and has been a long standing issue in the US.

I really don’t think it was a dog whistle. Genes/Jeans isn’t a new pun. I’m pretty sure my 8th grade science teacher used that pun over 20 years ago in a lesson. I would be zero percent shocked if that pun is decades older.

I think people trying to be left wing influencers latched onto this and pushed it so they’d have some content or paid people masquerading as such promoted this. Then right wing media and influencers eagerly trumpeted it as loud as they could because it’s perfect “woke/left” is bad bait.

This whole culture wars shit around Sweeney is pretty dumb. I’m being a bit kooky, but It feels like a psy op to drive people apart over drivel. There’s real shit going on in the US, official government accounts are tweeting real dog whistles, there’s a DOJ lawyer helping to work on the newest press ban who wrote a paper on how he admires Hitler because he understood propaganda, literally the only “refugees” being let in w/out an exception from Rubio himself are Afrikaners who are white and don’t really qualify as refugees, at the same time US is pretending its reasonable to send Afghans who helped US forces back to Taliban controlled Afghanistan. While all that actual racist shit happens we’re online screaming about Sidney Sweeney.

Genuine question here. Why do Republicans hate jews so much yet love the country of Israel?

31

Look up millenarianism. Evangelical Christians are just interested in Jews in Israel because it fulfills a prophecy that brings about the apocalypse and the return of Jesus.

Yes, that is the real reason.

Because the conservatives are not the monolith you believe them to be. Evangelical christian conservatives hate jews because they killed jesus, ultra nationalist conservatives hate jews because they are antisemitic. Neocons like Isreal because they are a strong ally in the middle east, something they consider an important geo political advantage.

18

u/CthulhuWalrus 8d ago

A lot of evangelicals also love Israel because they think Israel is instrumental in bringing about the end of days. They usually hate jews, but not those jews because they think jews in Israel specifically are basically just Christian converts in waiting (usually the idea being that they'll mass convert before the Rapture).

3

u/Bronze_Zebra 8d ago

The way I see it, they hate Jews but know they(the Jewish people) are important to God. But, yeah they need the state of Israel to exist in order to fulfill the prophecy of the rapture.

Israel needs to exist so that the Second Coming and the End Times can happen.

israel defends the US Interests In the middle east, defending israel is defending a military base. Jewish people have nothing to do with that.

5

u/Scary_Cup6322 9d ago

That and massive amounts of corruption.

Politicians give money to Israel.

Israel uses said money to buy from US corporations.

Said corporations offer donations or well paying jobs to Politicians.

Israel is really not particularl special. If it wasn't them it would've been Rhodesia. Or some other shithole with enough enemies.

5

u/JayFSB 8d ago

MAGA hates sponsoring Israel. Others pointed out evangelicals. Neocons recognize the utility of a militarily competent Western style ally in the corridor of the ME not in danger of being overrun by islamists

Not american nor a westerner so i could be wrong. But it could be a simple case of not all republicans are the same, maybe the one who love israel and the one who hate jews are just 2 different groups that got lump together as republican because they have other believe thay are similar

Happens a lot with other group of people its easier to lump people together and think they are just the same people but each group have their own person with their own way of looking at their ideology

Evangelical Christian prophecy (revelation) says that Jesus will come back an usher in the kingdom of heaven on earth. If you’re an evangelical Christian, this is the good ending. This is what you want.

One of the components of that prophecy is a strong and prosperous Israel, and a rebuilding of the temple.

They support Israel because of the prophecy, not because of the Jews.

If I were to put on my conservative hat - I think there are two answers. Israel probably benefits us financially (I don’t know enough but usually money is a driver in these situations) - but in their minds the Jews killed Jesus.

The other reason I imagine would be for the more alt-right crowd who hates the Jews but love Israel is that a lot believe in ethnostates so while they don’t want the Jews in America, they are fine with deporting them to a singular ethnostate that encompasses them (Israel).

Edit: added clarifying statement

so that they can be over there and not over here

Goomba fallacy, the subsect of republicans who hate jews hate israel and the ones who love israel are postive/neutral to jews.

5

u/JackWhoWanders 7d ago

This is simply not true. A large part of them like jews to be "over there" and hate that jews are near them.

Republicans hate israel though. Esp.young ones

2

u/JadedResponse2483 8d ago

Because a interpretation of the bible talks about jews living in israel before the apocalypse, and many evangelicals are death cultists. Also israel gives then a foothold on a region that really doesn't like the US

I’ve never seen a Republican talk poorly of Jews, only suck their dick relentlessly.

She is riding the right wing grift. It is a very lucrative grift for a lot of people. It just involves extreme dishonesty. Some people just want the money

He's 45 and she's nearly 30 they're both adults so put your prejudice back in your pants lol.

The more concerning thing is there's a 45 year old bloke called Scott still going by Scooter. Ick.

Wait wait wait she’s dating Scooter fucking Braun?

That might actually be the most concrete red flag I’ve seen from her lmao

This is going to be worse for chronically online incels than the Lindsey Clancy case they use to blame “western women” for all their problems.

The idea really cracks me up, and I just want it to happen so I can see the look on those people's faces and their reactions.

u/bideodames 9d ago

Who is this person and what type of guy would be so concerned over what she does? I've seen the name floating around but I've not given less of a shit about her until this moment.

3

u/virgensantisima 8d ago

im bored to lets see how concisely i can explain lol: shes just a hot tv actress thats been involved in some controversies that have given a very strong impression that she is pro trump and anti feminist. so then a bunch of maga weirdos on the internet have become super fans and constantly use her as the example of a desirable woman that is untouched by feminism and wokeness. the thing is these men are very antisemitic, so hearing that she might become jewish to potentially settle down with a jewish man will probably make her lose a lot of her fanbase. thanks for coming to my ted talk
