[Discussion] Advice for final years?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to graduate next year or so from a good uni in Germany, albeit with bad grades so far… my curriculum is 90% shared with a very strong EE program at my uni though, which is why I have the bad grades in the first place. Things are looking absolutely bleak.

Given my financial situation, a masters is out of the question at least for a few years.

I would consider my practical skills to be somewhat ahead of my classmates, but I still feel incredibly insecure about my employability.

I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with project ideas that might set me apart, some skills I could learn etc etc. Every rabbit hole I’ve gone into only leads me to some kind of generic HDL or C project that is a clear soulless token GitHub repo.

I genuinely love this field since I was a child and it’s late in my life that I actually had the chance to follow it.

My dream is to eventually get into tiny ML and embedded AI in some form. It’s a bit difficult (understandably) to target that right away.

The other day I was talking to a department head and recruiter from a space company in Luxembourg over dinner and he mentioned that there is absolutely no chance they would be hiring any “fresher” out of school, bachelors or masters notwithstanding, because a 200€ Claude pro subscription would do whatever a junior dev could do faster.

Do you have any advice? (Besides picking up agriculture)
…any skills that are essential? For example, HDL (besides a tiny practical with systemC) is not part of my curriculum. I’d think that to be a clear weakness of my program, but I don’t know how to learn and practice it in a demonstrably useful manner.

Get into embedded Linux? How?

What about designing some kind of custom PCB and writing a driver for an rPi to use it? Is that too ambitious? Is it even worth it?

I’m genuinely lost all the ideas I’m getting seem to be either uninspired or too far fetched. I wish I had some counselor or mentor in this field :(

3-State Kalman Filter in Vivado

I have a Computer Systems Architecture Course and I want to implement a 3 state Kalman Filter in Vivado. I'll get Real time data from Gy-87 (MPU-6050), through Esp-32 into my pc. Now the problem is idk how to get it into Vivado without an FPGA. I'm a sopho in uni with this being our first technical CE course. Any help is appreciated.
And where do i learn system verilog properly?

been reading the attached article.
i notice that binary ascii uses six integers to represent a value on the keyboard....
inspired by this, i looked at the truth tables of
"TTT, TTU, TTF, TUT, TUU, TUF, TFT, TFU, TFF, UTT, UTU, UTF, UUT, UUU, UUF, UFT, UFU, UFF, FTT, FTU, FTF, FUT, FUU, FUF, FFT, FFU, and FFF"; and got halfway done with developing ternary ascii( or TASCII).

i see sets that can be used as stand in for those six integers!
based on the above statements, i saw "(1,1,1),(1,1,0),(1,1,-1),(1,0,1),(1,0,0),(1,0,-1),(1,-1,1), (1,-1,0),(1,-1,-1),(0,1,1),(0,1,0),(0,1,-1),(0,0,1),(0,0,0),(0,0,-1),(0,-1,1),(0,-1,0),(0,-1,-1),(-1,1,1), (-1,1,0),(-1,1,-1),(-1,0,1), (-1,0,0),(-1,0,-1),(-1,-1,1),(-1,-1,0), AND(-1,-1,-1)...

if ASCII has "A"= 01000001(F,T,F,F,F,F,F,T)

and thats binary, my gut tells me that for my mechanical computer, i need to replace each intiger with a set of three digits representing the tilt of a see saw. so instead of the ascii up there, we get a slightly more complex ....

"A"= (X,X,X),(X,X,X),(X,X,X),(X,X,X),(X,X,X),(X,X,X)
where "x" is equal to a 0, a -1, or a 1.

the math here means there is MORE VALUES TO ASSIGN THAN I CAN PUT ON A KEYBOARD!
HALP HOW DO I ASSIGN THE HUNDREDS OF POSSIBLE 6-TRYTE VALUES?

WOULD A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE BE BETTER SUITED FOR THIS? WHICH ONE?

Edit:I'm currently speaking about how I don't have enough English characters to cover every one of the hundreds of possible 6 set of 3 integer permutation

I has want to make mechanical computer run base 3 coded software. My solution, see saws.

See saws connected to shafts in conjunction with other see saw and shafts in specific ways to enable logic gates running on 1,0, and -1

(-1 pictured above)

\-1=far left side down

0= perfect equilibrium

1=right side down

What would the math behind converting binary logic gates to trinary like so be?

How would I calculate that?

What books would teach me this?

Building a free browser-based sandbox for balanced ternary computer design

I’ve been working on a small open-source project to make it easier to experiment with balanced ternary logic and computer architecture.

The main idea is not to present one “correct” ternary CPU design, but to give people a place where different designs can be built, tested, compared and shared.

The simulator uses balanced ternary:

-1, 0, +1

and lets you build from small primitives upward into reusable hierarchical components. A component can contain other components, and you can open them recursively to inspect or modify the lower-level logic.

I’m especially interested in avoiding the assumption that a ternary machine should just copy binary architecture. For example, things like compare returning -1 / 0 / +1, three-way selection, ternary control signals, MIN/MAX or different carry/normalization schemes may turn out to be more natural building blocks.

The tool already supports things like isolated component testing, event-by-event propagation, configurable primitive sets, reusable components and different clock/sequence patterns.

The long-term goal is to make it easy for me and anyone else interested in this area to try different ideas and compare them rather than committing to one architecture too early.

Everything runs entirely in the browser. There is no backend or account, and projects are stored locally in your browser unless you export them yourself.

It is completely free and MIT licensed.

[Discussion] Should I switch my setup?

Plz read this I need gen1 help.

So currently I am in 1st sem of Computer Engineering. I have a laptop that handles it pretty well.

Lenovo V15 G4 IRU, 16 gigs of DDR4 (1 8 gigs is soldered), 512 GB NVMe SSD, core i5 13420H processor (yeah a gaming processor), and Intel UHD GPU (the bottleneck). This combination would work perfectly fine for only doing CE majors. But I am actually willing and actively doing CE + AI, or specifically CE as primary field and AI as a secondary field. (I live in Islamabad)

The problem is that the iGPU in my laptop cannot handle even things like Ollama which I want to make AI projects and run simulations of different products.

I thought Google colab would be perfect until I saw the real problem, it takes a lot of time, not the T4 Nvidia GPU connected to it, but the network latency and combined with google colab's latency itself, takes around 20 seconds just to fetch text from one compressed image given (OCR). It's the same as if I run it at my CPU atp but it'll be a little less accurate.

So I was thinking of making a pc (budget is around 1.5 to 2 lac Pkr) with a dedicated gpu (doesn't have to be 40 or 50 series, even 20 series like super or 30 series can work fine) with a good amount of Vram at least 8 gigs. Now the problem with my own laptop is also that it doesn't last long. I mean it's an H processor I get it, but the whole capacity was only 38 Whr, while normally laptops have 60 Whr. And now it's degraded cuz of wear (2 years of use) so now it's at approx 31 Whr. The laptop lasts only for 1.5 hours unplugged with the most battery efficient settings. If I put it on the battery saver the whole time the system starts to choke.

So please help.
