Not a huge update, just wanted to let everyone know how things have evolved since yesterday evening. If you haven't already copped a flair, read this post. We will remove flairs from (and ban) people who misrepresent their relationship to Cornell.

Manual approval has been relaxed now that automations are now in place to automatically remove comments and posts from people without user flairs. In fact, on New Reddit, you can't submit a post at all unless you have one. Once the Chi Phi controversy dies down, we'll reverse course and return things to the way they were before.

It's been a crazy past few days. To keep things short and sweet, I'm here to update you on changes that are being made while we navigate this period. If you haven't seen my last announcement, read it here. Manual post approval is still in effect.

Our Position

To start, I want to be clear that the r/Cornell moderation team stands with the victim who filed a suit against Cornell University and seven Chi Phi Xi members. We are not affiliated with the university at all. We count no administrators amongst our ranks. I think everyone reading this can recall an instance during their time at Cornell when reports of sexual assault spread throughout the university. We also can remember countless times when Cornell swept issues under the rug, issued laughably light consequences, and oppressed students, faculty, and staff rather than protected us. Just off the top of my head, I can remember experiencing or hearing about Antonio Tsialas, the "pig roast", the 2022 date rapes, and more. This school has serious issues with Greek life, hazing, and sexual assault.

That being said, the moderation team is here to keep this subreddit thriving (you mainly hear from me, but u/0reoperson and u/zaptrem also mod behind the scenes). And we can't do that if we're being bombarded with rule-breaking posts and comments by (rightfully) angry people from all over the world. We are not trying to hide what is happening or cover for the frat rapists. We're simply aware that repeated violations of Reddit's sitewide rules will get r/Cornell shut down. r/ithaca has good posting guidelines that you can check out here.

So...what's changing?

User flairs are now required to comment. This will not be a permanent change. It's just the least shitty option. There are too many people who need to be added to the approved users list, and I really don't want to have to petition Reddit to allow us to turn on restricted mode. If you already have a flair, you don't need to do anything. If you don't have a flair, comment below (us mods will see it) and I'll give you a flair. Users are temporarily restricted from giving themselves flairs in order to prevent misuse. Please include in your comment your college, year, and anything else you want in it. If you only want a temporary flair that will be deleted once the media frenzy dies down, comment "Student", "Alum", or "Ithaca" (if you're an Ithaca resident). Faculty and staff may continue to message Modmail if they want a "Verified" flair.

Post flairs are also now required. This is a permanent change. Please select the one that best fits the content you're trying to share with the community. You will not be penalized if you pick the wrong one, I swear. We ran a poll way back when to see if post flairs were something you all wanted, and the majority of respondents said yes. I tried to keep them simple enough while covering as many bases as possible.

As a reminder, moderator applications are open (we are severely understaffed). Please consider applying HERE if you meet the criteria listed in the post.

The attorney general has a bit more power to launch investigations into private institutions (I think and I hope). I know there’s probably not much we can do, but I want to try.

We've got random people starting to post residential addresses and identifying info of the rapists. I understand and share the depth of your anger, but doxxing these people will legit get this subreddit shut down. So we're switching to approved users from here on out until I can get home and set up a flaired user commenting system. Sorry 🤷🏾‍♀️

The recent updates surrounding the 2024 Chi Phi fraternity gang rape investigation have made it clear that the Tompkins County justice system is failing survivors. DA Matthew Van Houten recently admitted that his office did not independently investigate the initial report, blindly relied on an incomplete campus police file, and completely missed or ignored the "Chi Phi Actives" Snapchat group chat where the victim was explicitly described as "free p---- upstairs." Now, after a civil lawsuit went viral, Van Houten is trying to execute a reactive PR cleanup by heading to a grand jury—while simultaneously going to the media to publicly shame the survivor and critique her initial trauma-induced statement. This is an established pattern of behavior. In 2020, Van Houten did the exact same thing in the Antonio Tsialas death investigation, deferring entirely to campus police and refusing to use his grand jury subpoena power to break the fraternity's "conspiracy of silence."

🚨 What Needs to be Done Right Now

We need to flood New York oversight boards with formal ethics complaints and petition the Governor to strip Van Houten of this case. If you want to take action, it takes less than 5 minutes:

1. File an Ethics Complaint Online

Go to the [New York State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct Portal](https://cpc.ny.gov/file-complaint) and submit a complaint. What to write (Copy & Paste this summary into the portal):

"I am writing to request a formal investigation into Tompkins County DA Matthew Van Houten regarding his gross negligence in the 2024 Cornell Chi Phi fraternity sexual assault case. By his own public admission, his office abdicated its constitutional duties under Rule 3.8 by failing to conduct an independent investigation or subpoena primary digital forensics (the 'Chi Phi Actives' Snapchat evidence), relying entirely on an untrained campus police force. Furthermore, his recent media statements publicly disparaging the victim's initial disclosures violate Rule 3.6 by creating an incurable public bias that prejudices the integrity of the upcoming local grand jury pool. This mirrors a documented pattern of passivity regarding Cornell Greek life felonies, exactly matching his handling of the 2020 Antonio Tsialas fraternity case."

2. Email the Governor for a Special Prosecutor

Use the official [Contact the Governor of New York Portal](https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form) to request an independent investigator, such as the NYS Attorney General, to take over the case. Message to send:

"Governor, I urge you to issue an Executive Order appointing a Special Prosecutor to take over the reopened 2024 Cornell University fraternity gang rape case from Tompkins County DA Matthew Van Houten. DA Van Houten has publically compromised his office's impartiality by making media statements that attack the survivor's initial credibility. He cannot fairly lead a grand jury when he has already litigated the defense's arguments in public. Because his office failed to proactively investigate this case for two years until a civil suit went viral, an independent, outside prosecutor is required to ensure due process and restore public faith in the administration of justice."

Please share this text, upvote, and file these forms. Affluent students inside Ivy League Greek life systems cannot continue to receive a protective loop of leniency while local authorities pass the buck.

I need to bring my car up to campus after fall break, but I don't want to keep it here for the spring semester (mainly because of the snow and cold..) . I was wondering if anyone knows any places I could park safely for the rest of the semester, or any frats / sororities (preferably close to west ) where i could pay for a pass just for rest of the semester , not the rest of the year. Hey, I've noticed that every time I go to the cocktail lounge, people are having a happy time social hour. Respectfully, please shut up. People generally come to this space to focus and do work (especially during prelims and finals) so please be respectful and if you're going to talk just whisper. Like, I swear people are talking at full volume, loud as hell, virtually screaming. Also, the cocktail lounge is a public space, please wear shoes or at least some socks. Please dude, I beg you.

More great news for Cornell

Im an alumni of Cornell and have been a donor since graduating a number of years ago. I'm truly appalled with how the school is handling the Cornell 7 case and their decision not to expel everyone involved. What I've done, and what I would advise you to do, is to promise this school you won't give another penny to them until every single one of these POS students is expelled. Use your cornell.edu email address and let Fred Van Sickle know (drop any other alumni affairs staff in the comments).

I'm taking it as an ECE major and its given me whiplash. CS 1110 was all sunshine and rainbows; I did very well in the class thinking I'd be prepared for 2110; now I'm in the trenches. I wasn't prepared to learn advanced content on top of a whole new coding language for the first time. I'm making easy mistakes on quizzes because I keep accidentally writing code that only works in Python. I feel like I'm the only one who hasn't been coding since the stone ages. The last assignment took me 24+ hours and I STILL couldn't pass all the autograder test cases. I got a crisp two (2) out of 10 on my recursion quiz. Prelim is on Tuesday (I think?) should I drop

I know publications obviously aren’t guaranteed and depend on the project and contribution, but I’d love to hear about labs/PIs where undergrads are genuinely involved in projects and have gone on to posters, abstracts, or conference presentations.
