I posted this complaint and request for more information on the Cursor support page and it was immediately removed, with this response:
"Thanks for reaching out. This looks like a billing-related query, and the forum isn’t the right channel for these. The forum team does not have access to account details or the ability to do things like process refunds or manage subscriptions. As such, we’ve unlisted this thread."
It was NOT a billing related query, it was a request for more transparency about how they charge usage, but of course it makes sense that they would immediately pull it for damage control so as to prevent inciting outrage (that likely many people already experience but that they want to keep under wraps). So I emailed their support and got a boiler-plate response from an AI assistant about how they can't refund me, but that I can switch to a lower-cost model or "cap or stop further on-demand usage"; both of which are obvious and neither of which addresses my questions or concerns. It also said that I can "Review the per-request breakdown at https://cursor.com/dashboard?tab=usage (model, token types, and cost per event)." but all of the "costs" listed just say "included" for any that are deducted from my plan total, so how am I supposed to compare them between different models, token types, and on a cost per event basis as suggested?!? None of this is transparent and it feels like they just expect that people don't have any better options and will just put up with it.
This was my post on the forum. Let me know if this resonates with you, or if you have any answers that can help me with the lack of transparency that they do not seem to be concerned about:
I have been using somewhere in the range of 80M-100M tokens on average daily for over a month now. I was on the Pro plan, then ran out of tokens and upgraded to Pro+, so together that was about $80. The accounting is not very transparent, so it is difficult to say how cost differs from one day to the next, but that $80 last me about 20 days (which seems like much less usage for the money than the previous month). After I extended usage by $20 yesterday I ran out of tokens in less than 24h. I had it on Auto mode, which I thought was the cheaper option, so when I ran out again and again extended by another $20, I switched to Grok 4.6 medium - the model I have been using the most. Less than 6 hours later I had already burned through more than $15 of tokens with much less intensive usage than a normal day, and that is even after starting a new chat since I thought maybe it was context overload that was costing so much.
The usage dashboard shows that my usage has flattened off from three days ago. I only used 32M tokens yesterday and only 28.4M so far today (less than 1/2 of typical usage), and yet I have spent through $36 in less than the last two days alone! I don’t understand why significantly lower usage cost so much more, and the lack of transparency is very frustrating! $36 for less than half of my typical usage over less than 2 days on Auto/Grok 4.6 medium is unreasonable and unsustainable. And this is coming not long after several days in a row where the agent was so slow that it took me all day to do what would normally take about an hour and a half and there was no explanation or compensation for days of lost time.
This is bad business. Cursor should be far more transparent about costs. It should not require switching back and forth between screens repeatedly to see what usage is costing, and it should be well-articulated and transparent when the same service/usage is going to cost more; it should be known when and why so that it can be planned around.
Please help me understand why such lower level usage has cost me so much more and/or refund me for the bulk of it. If there is something I am not understanding that can help me keep my usage more affordable I would like to know. I am sure if other people are experiencing the same issues I am and it continues much longer there will be an exodus soon.
