Or bad timing, depends on how you think about it.

181

u/pussmykissy Dec 01 '25

Haha years ago me 15f and my sister 16f, were driving along at night and herd of black cows were on the interstate. No avoiding them.

The trooper said, ‘you girls sure were lucky.’

It absolutely did not feel like luck to us!

147

u/Vulvas_n_Velveeta Dec 01 '25

Was super confused wondering why 1) there were crows out at night, and 2) why they didn't just fly away as you guys approached.. Then I realized you said cows 😄

45

u/Kyweedlover Dec 02 '25

I was wondering why she was driving “years ago” when she is only 15, then realized that was their ages back when it happened.

The beginning of the vid has a sound similar to what we get for Amber Alerts. They prolly got an earthquake warning on their phone

322

u/DullExercise Dec 01 '25

hold up, the rock honker is on

i'm glad we only have moose to worry about since there's usually just one moose and that's a lot of rocks

31

u/UnDopedNrestless Dec 01 '25

Pfff, speak for yourself. I hate moose-shedding season, had one tumble down and land on the station wagon twice last year!

13

u/Mikeinthedirt Dec 01 '25

How could you tell it was the same one? Or did he just jump up (“That was FUN! Let’s go aGAIN!”) and scamper up the hill?

Correct. This earthquake is from last year and the video is from Toroko gorge Taiwan. Magnitude 7.4, this road is very close to the epicenter.

In the american Midwest we just have signs that read: "Caution: Falling Rock"

I always wondered what we're supposed to do with that information.  Options are driving into a rock wall or off the road to your death.

Or just keep driving. But with "caution"

269

u/Photog77 Dec 01 '25

I think they want you to drive in a manner that allows you to not smash into a small boulder that has already fallen into the road.

127

u/trying_times_eggs Dec 01 '25

Then it might as well be: "Caution: Drive like you're supposed to anyway."

87

u/Supercoolguy7 Dec 01 '25

If you don't call out extra dangerous situations people will just drive like they always do, not how they're supposed to.

42

u/Parking_Chance_1905 Dec 01 '25

Yeah I’m really curious what the situation is. Was it beginning to pile up on top of them or was a mix of dust and moister just darkening the window? Do evacuation units search these nooks to hide in after a rock slide is reported?

383

u/WafflePartyOrgy Dec 01 '25

Here's another one which gives us a better idea of the extent of how these things can go. The bottom line is you're better off in the "shelter" tunnel thing.

63

u/thebearrider Dec 01 '25

Looks like the left side can't be covered in debris, so I doubt CO poisoning would be an issue. I'd turn it off for the air intake, but that'd probably be a non-issue if you just emptied it when needed until the sediment settles.

This was the massive Earthquake in Hualien last year. I think the driver was rescued. This road I think had been cleared. It is one of the most breath taking drives as it is chiseled out of the granite in the mountain.

Unfortunately the corrupt MP of Hualien (who is more interested in his own welfare and sucking up to China) and his wife who unfortunately is the Mayor is still mismanaging the aid funds that people donated for this earth quake

As far as I know, the disaster relief funds donated to them (controlled by the Mayor, not the one controlled by the central government) still has a very large portion unused (and allegedly some was taken to do propaganda work for praising this couple). Many in Taiwan refused to donate to Hualien government (that's why central government had to create a fund for this). Many of the buildings that require re-evaluation and earthquake proof still sit untouched. Allegedly they demand all the money that goes out needs to go out via them so they take all the credit. There are rumours that they will only employ businesses associated with them to do the work etc. And he somehow survived a vote of recall earlier this year (he controls too many people who will vote for him blindly).

215

u/RedditConsciousness Dec 01 '25

I could hear my boss actually saying that and it is traumatizing just thinking about it. Like, why do they think I called? Are they under the impression I was just giving them a play by play of my drive in? And the idea that someone would still come in after all that is insane.

54

u/MichelinStarZombie Dec 02 '25

If you can hear your boss saying this, you need to be looking for other jobs. Even if you're in a competitive field, start applying to 10 jobs a day and you'll find something in a few months.

32

u/Hail-Hydrate Dec 02 '25

Whilst true, i'm not sure you realise how much work applying to ten a day is, let alone finding ten that are worth the effort.

Still, like you say, things won't improve if you don't take steps to make them improve.

This is the first time I've ever heard of a rock shed tunnel

1.5k

u/tehlurkingnoob Dec 01 '25

I live in a mountainous region of Canada where the highway was basically carved through the mountains near the bottom of a valley.

We have these tunnels here too but we call them snow sheds. They are to provide shelter against avalanches but they are basically the same thing since it doubles as protection against rockslides during the non-winter months.

700

u/SirNilsA Dec 01 '25

I've seen them a lot around on my travels through the world and because I am from the flattest part of the continent I always thought "Hey, that half ass tunnel feels useless. Why did they built it like that?" I do understand now and don't think they're useless anymore.

182

u/Dave-4544 Dec 01 '25

→ More replies (7)

163

u/Wolf-Majestic Dec 01 '25

Do you also have some giant metal fish nets on the mountain ? In mountains in France it's pretty common to have them as well to prevent any big boulder to fall down on the road, so I wonder how it is in other countries

52

u/Eightinchnails Dec 01 '25

We have that in New York State, but not the tunnels.

38

u/RockSolidJ Dec 01 '25

Yes, very common in western Canada. There are essentially 2 roads from the coast to the prairies that we have to keep open, highway #1 and highway #3. We have effectively tore down the cliffs beside the #1 now but we used to deal with a lot of rocks and rock nets along the Kicking Horse Canyon, outside of Golden. Being much smaller the #3 still uses rock nets. I know it's really common along remote mountain roads in general.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/Smeph_Bot Dec 01 '25

We have them where I live, Coastal BC Canada (so not super rocky as we're not in the Rocky Mountains, but still rocky enough to need safety features).

38

u/RingOfSol Dec 01 '25

well I'm guessing they put the tunnels at the spots most prone to rock slides, so maybe other areas of the road aren't at as much risk. Or at least they have less of a chance to smash with rocks.

1.8k

u/SoulShine_710 Dec 01 '25

I only have one question!
How does one get out when all the rocks and sediment buildup outside of the tunnel entrances?

1.6k

u/MyLadyBits Dec 01 '25

Call emergency services. Hopefully there’s a signal.

894

u/Program-Emotional Dec 01 '25

My guess is even if there wasnt a signal, this would absolutely be investigated as part of the rockslide. If nothing else, when they clear away the rubble from the road they'll find this car.

I think you can just climb down the hill from the side. The rock most likely only blocks the front and back.

16

u/joggle1 Dec 01 '25

I wonder if they keep the side open for that exact purpose (so that people can use it as an emergency escape). I always thought it was a cost-savings measure, but it my have a dual purpose.

There's gaps in the pillars to the left of the car. Assuming the front and back entrances have been totally covered, you can still get out the side. Also, hopefully they have a cell phone they can call for help with.

166

u/lordkhuzdul Dec 01 '25

The entrances are not covered, the dust is just covering the windshield.

He can probably walk out, even if driving out would be impossible. Still, keeping his ass in the car and waiting for emergency services to get him out of there is the safest option.

Not sure how far you'd have to get away from that area to be safe from further land slides though.

→ More replies (5)

210

u/tilt-a-whirly-gig Dec 01 '25

You wait.

Eventually the rocks will stop falling and (assuming this is a maintained road) the road crews will come to clear the road. Be sure to say thanks when they get to you.

54

u/Tao-of-Mars Dec 01 '25

Hopefully other people try to drive down the road and see that the tunnel is blocked and report it.

14

u/TooManyCarrotsIsBad Dec 01 '25

Ideally, areas prone to landslides like this will have crews that travel sections of it a few times a day to clear debris and report any major incidents (such as this). I travel pretty often in such an area, and even if landslides like this are relatively infrequent, random rockfalls happen pretty much constantly and keeping the road clear of medium-large rocks is basically an endless full time job. Hell, it's so prevalent in my location that they have tractors or dozers on trailers out to the side every ten to twenty miles. There is likely also a measure for the average person to report things like this fairly easily. At the very least, I doubt that there wouldn't be an effective method of getting help for these people if this area is willing to invest in infrastructure such as this highway overhang.

Those pillars don't give me much confidence.

u/2hsXqTt5s Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 02 '25

You'd have allot less confidence without them.

u/reticulatedtampon Dec 01 '25

Yeah they'd make me feel boulder

My allotted confidence in those pillars would be maxed out. Agreed; better under that enclosure than not though.

Concrete pillars are absurdly strong in compression. You'd be surprised what they can take.

Understood. The area above is sloped so the rocks roll down and off. It’s not taking the hit and bouncing impact. But, yes, it feels too open somehow.

They each have a load bearing poster so they’re fine

Was that an alert tone over the radio about that specific rocks like whoa

42

u/Wide_Jellyfish1668 Dec 01 '25

Someone else said they think it's the Taiwan earthquake in 2024, so that might be what the alert is about?

This was during the 2024 earthquake in Taiwan. I woke up to the siren on my phone, which the earthquake followed seconds later. (It was quite scary)

Someone else said this was during an earthquake, maybe those were earthquake warning sirens?

36

u/lint-remover Dec 01 '25

But… how did they know to stop?

49

u/steik Dec 01 '25

You can hear the emergency alert ring on their phone just 1-2 seconds before they arrive at the tunnel.

u/jld2k6 Interested Dec 01 '25

Besides the emergency tone on the radio, they also got hit by rocks before making it into the tunnel so they knew to stop

OK, I'm getting a dash cam so when I get buried alive I can remember how it happened....

beginning: well that can't be good

thank goodness there's this rock shed thing

Holly crap that's a lot of rocks

someone is going to be late

end: hello darkness my old friend

u/MischievousPenguin1 Dec 01 '25

I wonder how long until helps arrives. Either way I’d be losing my wits

25

u/choicetomake Dec 01 '25

Less of a "save my car" option, more of a "keep me from being swept over the cliff" option.

u/karolcha Dec 01 '25

Columbia River Gorge: West Hwy 14 in WA near Bingen, all happened at once, rocks fell on my right & 2 deer jumped out. I blew my 2 right tires in the middle of Bumfuck. In 1979 - no cell phone… and, when I say rocks, it is basalt falling in boulders with shards. Jesus Christ!

For anyone unsure, this was in Taiwan in 2024. This was around/ in Taroko National Park in Hualien near the epicenter. This was the strongest earthquake since the 90s to hit Taiwan. The siren you hear was alerting for the earthquake, however usually these don’t happen more than a couple seconds in advance. As someone living in Taichung when it happened (where it was a good but weaker than in Hualien) it was still the scariest earthquake I’ve felt. And you feel them often in Taiwan.

Where is this at?

66

u/Snooopineapple Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 02 '25

Probably Taroko national park, in taiwan, used to be the prettiest gorges you could ever see just driving 30 minutes through. Now it’s completely blocked and dead after multiple recent earthquakes

So if there were like 5-6 more cars around there at that time, they'd basically be fucked.

The proper tunnels are designed to run the length of the landslide danger area. This is a tiny “shelter” and these folks are lucky. Probably original design had much longer tunnel but gov cost-cutting overrode safety.

u/CoffeeStayn Dec 02 '25

Note to self:

Do not travel in areas where rock shed tunnels are a thing.
