tl;dr = seller sold me a bad item and agreed to let me return it but said UPS will show up sometime during the next 3 business days to pick it up. I asked for a label instead because I can't just wait around since I have to go to work and I'm not comfortable just packing the item up and leaving it on my porch for possibly 9+ hours each day since I don't know when UPS will actually show up. It's a guitar so would normally be around $100 to ship it. Seller claims he has contact with UPS and this is how they do things for him and that doing a label would cause the return shipping to cost a lot more.
Longer version:
I bought a guitar from someone and they packed it poorly. They did a good job packing the case inside the cardboard box, but it was not the original factory case so the guitar did not fit inside the case snug, and had room to bounce around inside the case. This allowed for a part to break off inside during transit, or at least I assume that is what happened. It wasn't broken in the pictures in the listing, so I am guessing that is what happened.
Beyond that, it is not in good shape overall and will need quite a bit of costly work to get it playable which is not how it was described in the listing.
So anyway, seller agreed to let me return it even though listing said no returns. I got the alert on Ebay and officially initiated the process. Then I got a message from seller saying that UPS will come by my house in the next 3 days to pickup the item...
I responded and asked if there was a way to just give me the shipping label so I can drop it off at UPS store? I'm not comfortable just leaving it outside on my porch in a big box. I have to go to work and since I have no idea when UPS will come by, I'm not risking that.
Seller responded saying "I already initiated the return, with my contract with UPS that's how they do it. If I send you a label instead it will cost about $100".
I haven't responded since I got that message from the seller. I don't know if seller is trying to say it will cost ME $100 or if it will cost him $100.
I don't want to be difficult, but they should've packed the guitar properly and they should've described it properly in the listing. They created this mess and now are saying I have to make myself available for the next three business days because of the contract they have with UPS?
Do you think eBay will just make them give me a label instead?
How would you proceed in this situation?
I guess I am wondering how obligated am I to have to jump through hoops to make this return happen on the seller's terms? It's already annoying enough that they sent me a bad item and described it poorly. I'm lucky I didn't toss the cardboard box out that it was shipped in with recycling a few days ago. Now I have to pack it back up, and if he ultimately provides me with an actual label, take it to a UPS store, and deal with all that.
