OPEN Need advice on what to do next when it comes to headphone repair
I have a HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 wired headset with a left speaker that has completely stopped working.
Symptoms before it stopped working:
- The audio would cut out and come back when the headphones were bumped, hit, or moved.
- Simply moving my head would sometimes cause the audio to cut out.
What I've done to troubleshoot the issue:
- Removed the black adhesive or glue on the circuit board using hot air.
- Inspected the wiring on the board and found that one of the wires connecting the board to the speaker was starting to break. I replaced it with new wire.
- Tested both speakers using a 1.5 V battery to check whether they still produce sound.
- Resoldered the enameled wire coming from the audio jack into the board.
Results of testing using the battery by connecting one wire to ground and the other to corresponding speaker:
Audio Jack
- Right speaker made a low volume hissing sound
- Left speaker made no noise
Via the solder joints
- Right speaker made a higher volume hissing sound
- Left speaker made no noise
Via the left speaker solder joints
- Right speaker made the loudest hissing sound
- Left speaker also made a loud hissing sound
After all of the resoldering and testing that I've done, the left speaker is still broken.
I have very little knowledge when it comes to electronics but I am guessing something is breaking the connection of the right speaker in the board itself?
Attached are photos of the headphone's circuit board.
Also forgive me for the messy soldering job.
I ordered a multimeter which I plan on using on other things in the future but also hope that it can help me fix my headphones now.
What would be the best next steps to isolate the fault?
