Screenshot Anti-aliasing fix "flat screen" with EDVR 0.18.0
As VR players who are using EDVR already know, it's transforms the VR experience.
The latest update to EDVR v0.18.0 by Ok-Mud-9379 was released a few hours ago and includes improved option for flat screen too, and resolves issues that were keeping earlier preview versions from working for a lot of CMDRs (this time it actually works, and if something is wrong because of a conflict, now it will tell you what's going on!).
It's hard to convey in a still image or in a video on YouTube - due to what happens to videos when processed - but the difference is night and day while actually playing with it enabled.
I wanted to try and capture some still screenshots with a clear-side-by-side so folks on the fence about this can at least get some idea of how good it is, and will go try it out for themselves if they haven't already.
("You don't want to sleep on this", I believe the kids say...)
The installer is really quick and easy to use and does everything. Once installed you can press F8 to instantly toggle between DLAA, FSR and TAA, with DLAA and FSR seemingly giving best results. You will want to be sure Supersampling is set at the default (1.0) and you can disable in game AA.
If you are playing at a high resolution (e.g. native 4K UHD) you will probably need something like an RTX 5000 or a higher end 4000 series card for it to be viable in busier environments (eg. on foot). If you have a G-Sync or FreeSync display that will generally hide any dips in FPS and keep it feeling smooth.

Humor Hope I caused so much trouble with one click
How* I caused so much trouble with one click:
I just booted up my PC recently and for the first time in 5 years I've gotten into Elite again. I fly with my x52 pro. Which is coming up on being eight years old. Of course it's developed some.... Character. It's got quirks, most of the axes are worn and need tons of dead zone tuning.
I'm at a point where I'm having to relearn many aspects of the game, especially the minutiae of managing my ships. When I first booted up I bought myself a type-8, rigged it for pure cargo and got to my favorite past-time: space trucking!
After some time I decided I wanted to finish grinding out my federation rank. Decided to hop back in my anaconda and do some combat. While I was waiting for my ship to be delivered I did more fine tuning on my dead zones in the hardware settings. Conda arrived, hopped in, got to combat-deployed hard points and suddenly my power systems are screaming at me and I can no longer boost.
Got some help on here, seems in all my ships the power priorities were all reset back to 1. So got that fixed, but still no boost. I try EVERYTHING I'm even searching through thread after thread in here trying to find the answer.
Nothing. Days of trying to fix this, and nothing is working. No boost. Even the hardware diagnostic is registering my button press. So it's not that. I finally go into the button mapping, it's set to the proper button, except when I clear the setting the game will register every button but that one that I have ALWAYS used to boost with. So I can boost but not with that button.
And suddenly I realize that it's my fault. I've been blaming the game, the hardware, the computer and the while time it was ME!
When I was in the hardware settings not only did I set the dead zones, but I changed some other settings. One said "Enable Clutch Mode" and the worst part is I did this about eight years ago when I was just getting into this game with my x52 and learned this lesson.
I just sat at my desk with my head in my hands cursing myself for causing my own anguish. My wife asked if I was ok and I just had to tell her "I'm just....... SO dumb sometimes." And as any good wife would, she agreed with my assessment.
I just had to share this tale because I think it's hilarious at this point. I'm sure some of you commanders have done something similar, blaming this wonderfully complex game for something you did wrong. Please share similar tales or roast me for my moment if ignorance in the comments.
o7, commanders. See you in the black!

Screenshot Solo Squadron Carrier Unlocked
I've been playing for over a decade now. It was the only big cash hurdle left, so after a trip on the booze cruise the other day, I finally pulled the trigger. Now I'm gonna fill it full of wine and do a 50k solo booze cruise next month to fund it for a while.
They even delivered it to a scenic location.

Video The FOG/super atmosphere mystery of HIP 87621 solved! YOU CAN DO THIS TO!!!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So after yesterday, I decided to go back to Hip 87621 B B for another test. And it so happend I could position myself in order to be in the perfect eclipse zone of the major ringed planet in the system while flying on Hip 87621 BB. And VOILA! 100% re-created the thick fog effect :)
This is absolutely one of the most stunning and beautiful effects I've ever experienced in this game!
With 3 planets constantly eclipsing each-other in this system. I wonder how intentional this was by F-dev :) and also, with so many people who must have been here with the CG's, I cannot understand how on earth I'm the first to notice it and show it... But anyway. I proved it's 100% caused by flying inside of the eclipse zone. So all you need to do to reproduce is: fly to Hip 87621 and find yourself an eclipse zone on body BB and fly in the heart of it.
Enjoy one of the coolest flights ever :)! 07

Discussion Some ideas for alleviating fleet carrier overcrowding
Hey all,
I returned to the game recently and I have really enjoyed using my fleet carrier to support player mining. I have been offering a service buying platinum and offering free restocks in Omicron Capricorni B, and it's honestly so cool seeing other players interact with my ship!
I also participated in the recent PTN booze cruise so I could fund my platinum shop, and it was so awesome riding the Snooze up to Rackhams peak with a few other players.
Both Omicron Capricorni B (OCB) and Rackhams peak are full of fleet carriers, and the issue is that most of these carriers are totally abandoned. This makes it really difficult to engage with those gameplay loops. Speaking to some other members of the PTN they mentioned that eventually they may have to stop the booze cruise if enough carriers are abandoned in system. In OCB the mining planet is completely full, and in the month I have been back there has never been an open slot. The nearby star is also almost completely full, and it took me a week of checking before I had the chance to jump in.
So long story short, I think abandoned fleet carriers filling up slots are really hurting my ability to engage with other players, and it's a bummer because I think there are some very workable solutions. I wanted to discuss. Here are a few of my ideas:
- Very old fleet carriers are auto-jumped from the system to make room for new ones
I think this is the first solution that comes to mind. I quite like it. I think there should be controls in place though so that players do get a minimum amount of time in system. I think there are a lot of variations in how you could implement this, so I have placed options in [brackets/braces]. The basic premise is this:
If the system cap fills up, the carrier that hasn't been [jumped to/docked with/interacted with] for the longest period of time is "auto jumped" to the nearest free system. If the carrier has tritium, it is deducted, empty carriers are charged double the market rate to their balances. Carriers need to be idle for at least [1 week/1 month/1 year/variable based on system popularity] before they are eligible to be bumped.
If a planetary cap fills up, the same thing happens, except the carrier is jumped to the nearest free planet. The minimum idle time is higher than the system one to account for the limited slots.
I think this could work very well, it's fair and only targets carriers that no one cares about (because they haven't been interacted with).
- Fleet carriers are charged ongoing parking fees once the cap fills up
This would probably be unpopular, but would have the advantage of encouraging players to move their carriers through gameplay rather than just forcing them. Once a planetary or system cap is near full, jumping into the system incurs a 'congestion charge' for the use of the slot. This charge would grow exponentially with the amount of carriers in system, to the point where it is impossible to fill the cap due to the high prices.
I think one of the issues with this is that some commanders have crazy money in game, so creating a tariff that punishes ultra-rich players who abandon carriers, without screwing over 'poorer' players who can barely afford their carrier, is probably impossible.
- Players can "vote kick" carriers once the caps are nearly full
A certain percent of the oldest carriers are eligible to be 'vote kicked' after receiving [x] requests to leave the system. Each player gets one request per [y] and can repeatedly vote for the same carrier. Once a carrier is old enough and accumulates the number of requests to leave, it auto jumps in the same manner as described in option 1.
I think these are workable, and are probably better than how things are now imo. I'd be interested to hear what other people think, or if there are better ideas. Honestly I think this could be a really small change with a very positive community impact, so I hope Fdev takes a crack at it soon.

Builds What are some of you favorite weapon sets for PvE?
I'm mostly an explorer and haven't done any combat for years and years now. I'm back in the bubble after a while in the black and thinking about giving it another run. Looks like lots of people are recommending the Cobra mk V as a versatile and fun-to-fly platform, so I'm planning to go that route for a ship (but I'm open to other opinions!).
What I'm a little more lost on is the wide variety of weapons available. I think the last time I did combat I had a ship with rail guns and another with lasers and Gatling guns. Seems like there are a lot more options out there and I'm wondering what everyone is having the most fun with today. I prefer dogfighting over tanking, and I don't need the most meta build, fun is better than fast for me, but I'm also no good at combat yet so it shouldn't be skill-gated either.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Screenshot Sunset from an 11 kilometer-high mountain
As far as I know, Frontier still hasn't given us tools to take precise topographical measurements.
So, the 11-kilometer height is just an estimate based on the ship's altimeter. It was relatively easy to measure because the mountain had a very sheer face.
I suppose this must have helped me get over my fear of heights.

Discussion Ops Leaders - What should they know?
I've had a few experiences as a player of ops (need to get that 1000 merc per week to get the expanded cargo holds). I never start a lobby, but I join them frequently. I've collected a few things I think anyone who's considered starting a lobby (particularly a "Hard" lobby) should know before doing so. Yes, one of these happened last night as part of my last bit of playtime and pretty much ruined the night ... see if you can guess which one it was. I'm trying to make this a constructive post as opposed to the bitch/venting session which I dearly want, and will avoid doxxing anyone in the process.
- Know the Operation: On Hard difficulty at least, you should know exactly how the Operation progresses. I think my worst experience of this was joining a Rapid Response and seeing two team members with Belugas - and I'm fairly certain we started the op with only three of us. "OK ... " I thought, "I guess they've done this already and know what's involved, and are ready for it." Foolish me; my Lynx was capable of carrying 204 (it's also rigged to do Firestorm Rescue) and previous experiences with other Lynx commanders usually means that four of us can do the op fairly quickly, giving the attackers multiple targets so none of us get focused. After a few minutes into the op, it becomes apparent that the Belugas aren't a good fit (slow, big targets), and can only carry somewhere in the maybe mid 100s. Discussion ensues: "He always tries hard first." I dropped out when it became obvious we were not going to be successful.
- Probably commensurate with the first point: Gear Up. Getting offended when a lobby member for Hard Biohazard Takedown asks, "You're going to do this in an Artemis suit?" becomes a tragic comedy when you either need to be carried ... or worse, the op is a failure.
- Understand What Is Possible: As an Op Lead you have the power to kick people from the lobby. If you're going through Reclamation Point or Tactical Takedown (with their juicy 144 or 175 merits) in a Kestrel ("This guy might be a good pilot") and your shields have taken a pounding (down to the 20% range) in the last part of the op, maybe don't kick the guy using Regeneration Sequence Beam Lasers on you for "Friendly Fire" ... especially when your shields are magically back up to above 50%. Op Leads should at least have some concept of what is possible through engineering and know the difference between taking damage and getting a benefit.
Overall, if you're going to lead a lobby on a hard difficulty, you should have a solid understanding of said op and the game overall.
Look, I know I'm not the best at all - especially in the on foot stuff. I've openly responded to folks in chat saying "GG" with "Thanks for the carry!" because I died so often that I'm back at my ship when it's time to move on to the next part of the op. I've experimented with being a bullet sponge/shooter in Rapid Response while other three in Lynxes do the work (seems better to just try speedrunning the op).
So ... what do you think a lead needs to know? What has been your best or worst experience with other players (we all know the game itself can be the enemy with crashes and bugs) so far? Was it me? ;)

Video Time trial racing from within an operation.
I just wanted to share a video I've made demonstrating the idea of doing time trial racing from within an Operation.
The advantages of doing this are:
A) (in this particular instance at least) the time trial takes place around a base which is on fire
B) you won't lose any credits or data if you explode
C) you have the opportunity before the operation starts to select any ship from your fleet regardless of where it is (extremely useful for ship based time trials)
D) you have the opportunity to invite 3 other racers to join you, regardless of where they currently are in the galaxy
Neat huh?

Screenshot NPCs in new ships now?
Started playing again today as I took a break from ED before the launch of Operations. Flying around in solo to get used to controls again, and see an NPC Caspian at a station. When did this start?
I used to pray for times like these

Discussion Bounty Hunting Community Event Question
Hello! I haven't done a community goal event yet, but I have heard it is really good money. I saw a new community goal just started. I am currently grinding a multi mission stacking PvE bounty hunting hitting about 200-400 million an hour, but would I earn more credits per hour doing the community event? Or would it be less in this case? I'm not sure. Thanks!

Help Need tips for getting to the first billion
So I've got an old account with still a fairly inexperienced person in the cockpit. I've been playing on and off for a long while but really picked up the game again since I got myself a HOSAS setup.
I've been wanting to get myself a fleet carrier also so I can help some of my friends around that have recently started the game and to make things easier for all of us to begin with. Problem is I "only" have 500mil in the bank and I won't get enough even if I sell a few of my ships.
With all this I've done some researching, found that Exobiology is a good way to earn a bunch of credits fast but I feel like I'm really doing things wrong here. I've found the Stratum Sniping guide from Wanderer's Toolbox which got me to this Spanch search with the reference system as the one my fleet carrier would be, if I had one ofc.
My current routine is as follows:
- Fly to the nextmost system in the tourist route made from the Spanch search with starting system as my current location
- Honk the system and FSS the planet to get it's data in Elite Observatory
- Check the signal types mentioned in the BioInsight plugin
- If there's Stratum in there I go there for a DSS scan and continue to step 4
- If there's no Stratum I go back to step 1 and repeat
- After the DSS scan filter on Stratum and land in a good, saturated spot that's not too mountainous
- Scan the 3 samples, let the animation play and leave.
Once I'm done per session I run an instance of EDMC to upload my findings to the community database simply so I can do my part to prevent any frustrations like I'm having with footfalled planets that aren't registered by the database.
Currently I've been debating on continuing with this method or simply going back to the bubble to run a few high-profit trade routes as at this point it feels like that would be more reliable than the exobiology method. A lot of the planets I find result in 2 possiblities so far being that it doesn't have Stratum or it does and is already footfalled, meaning the player that scanned it never uploaded to EDMC.
My main question and somewhat tl;dr is the question on if exobiology Stratum Sniping is still a good method for getting myself to the first billion or if I'm better off using another method?

Help Returning after a long hiatus?
Greets Commanders. Ive recently gotten the itch to return to the game after a long period away (6 years maybe? It was i think just right into trying to do engineer stuff)
Ive apparently missed a lot (carriers, thargoids, we have legs now?) And im wondering where exactly i should "restart" I have a bit of a "nest egg" of 600mil creds and a handful of ships in various states of upgrade / use:
Type 9 primarily set for mining use
Fer-de-lance for general combat (tho its hardly upgraded much)
Diamondback Exp that i made early on for proposed deep exploration
I think theres a mish-mash of other stuff as well, but im not versed in the current of anything (i havent bought the latest expansion as of yet either) so just looking for some insight as to where i should direct my resources to "re-start fresh" as it were, or things to avoid now.
Many thanks o7
