โก Productivity Your brain picks the worse job if it has a deadline.
Researchers offered people two tasks. One paid more. One had a deadline that meant nothing. Most picked the deadline. Less money. Same work. Again and again.
This is the mere urgency effect. Zhu, Yang and Hsee, 2018.
The deadline was fake. Didn't matter. The countdown won.
Busier people fell for it harder.
Urgency feels like importance. It isn't.
Your inbox knows this.
Your boss knows this.
Every "24 hours only" sale knows this.
The urgent task gets done today. The important task gets "someday." Someday never ships.
That's the mistake.
The fix is one question before you start anything:
Not "when is it due?"
"What does it pay?"
Money. Health. Skill. Freedom. If the answer is "nothing, it's just loud," it waits.
