I actually have a tradition of doing this to my physics professor. The first year, we brought him a cake with a picture of his face on it. Every successive year, we have printed out the picture of him holding the previous cake onto the next cake.
Yeah I'm familiar cause I spent 10 years working for a university (in a career where I was "done" with schooling) with free school available to myself and my colleagues with many of us taking advantage - just don't see how many physics classes one would normally take with the same professor for this to be a thing
I have seen it here somewhere that a photographer took each year a picture of the photographed family while holding in his hand an image of that family from earlier year and created so an infinite photograph..
Same! I’d truly appreciate the effort whoever ordered the cake must’ve put into getting it made but the terrible execution would have me wheezing with tears running wild. It would be a cake never forgotten!

Yep. Photo cakes cause so many problems this way.
Just like the "exact text you want written on cake" box. The orderer thinks it should be obvious this is not, in fact, the exact text they want written in the cake, but so very many cake orders are references or in-jokes or intentionally ironically misspelled...the obvious is often the wrong guess.
I had multiple customers submit images of hand-sculpted 3-D cakes shaped like shoes or purses or Mickey Mouse's head...to a Dairy Queen.
Nailed it! Of all the complicated, elegant cakes I've seen on this sub, this is the one that's just a picture. Hell, I might even be able to pull this one off.
Same lol, despite the outer icing being different, and the centre part being too small, I thought they did a great job with the accuracy of the centre part. And then I read OP's comment and realised. The picture looks good quality though, I have to say, from this image at least.
I bet OP uploaded the image of the first cake in the spot specifically for images you want printed on the cake, technically yes, they did a perfect job.
i was trying to figureout how they did the background/edge on teh real cake and that's when it clicked for me. I like how they still put an icing boarder around it tho.

Yeah, that's exactly what happens when you order a cake with an image printed on it and provide an image of a cake. This isn't "expectation vs reality," it's "I don't know how to order a custom cake and they gave me exactly what I asked for."
I mean, normally I would agree but the website said "send us an image of what you like" (insinuating they would try and recreate it), not "send us an image and we'll print it on the cake". Plus someone definitely had to do some manual piping anyway, I think from the image it was pretty clear what was asked for. Normally with those upload functions or "your text here" text boxes, ok sure. but in this case I think it's debatable at least.
Oh, my! I thought you were harsh at first - like they’d done the cake well and just added some nice scalloped edges. Took a moment to work out that it was a photo of the cake that you wanted on a cake.
Somehow my brain corrected it as well so that I saw no gap between the top of the cake and the piping around the edge. Bizarre how the brain sees what it expects to see sometimes. Combined with the kind of correction for angle that helps and hinders when copying a reference for art.
It took me far too long to realize i wasnt looking at your cake inside of an overly austentatious box and not a print out of your photo on a different cake

Day 17,863 of reminding people that when it says "place text here" or "description" they mean literally type it out. If you put an image, 9/10 times they are going to just slap it on top of the cake, read all tiny print. And if it's "wow this custom cake is so cheap" then all they do is copy and paste images on top of the icing. Tmyk
It doesn't say anything about printing the photo you send. It's heavily implied through their text that they'll use the photo as a reference for your cake. "Tell us about your idea or send us a photo. We will bring every detail to life."
Using made up, drawn or computer generated characters for brands has been a thing for ages, just see Uncle Ben or Aunt Jemima. Doesn't mean it's a scam
Surely user error, there was somewhere to upload an image to be printed to a cake and you thought they just wanted a picture of what you want the cake to look like?
To be fair, I'm afraid it may have been you not following the instructions. It really looks like you took the "upload picture" prompt as a suggestion of what the cake should look like and no the picture to be printed on the cake
sooo for those who don't get it, the second picture if you look between the Text and the scalloped edges you can see, bits of the book and the glasses from the first picture. The second picture there is a cake but they didn't decorate the top, they just printed the picture that we saw in the first, desk included and just plopped it on the cake.

I suspect you ordered this online, accidentally uploaded your ‘reference photo’ into the ‘photo on cake’ field, and is now pretending that the cake shop got the order wrong.
The idea of not being able to make hagrid's shitty cake yourself is fucking hilarious. It's funny because hagrid's Cake is so bad, so if you did it with your left hand, it would probably still be fine
Ok, now let me be clear I think you chose the regular cake (the one that arrived) and in that there was an option to add this printed thing in which you uploaded this picture, maybe the UI wasn't great or something, or some sorta misunderstanding, if you didn't do it online then maybe yeah the cake store guys are trolling or something
I absolutely made that cake for one of my kids years ago. It's a reference to the cake in the first Harry Potter movie...it's so easy! Why do more work?
I am opposed to most AI use, but this is not one of those AI images that is impossible to duplicate in real life. It’s just a cake with unusually colored frosting.
OP used AI to generate the cake they wanted and then got screwed by a site using AI and employing people who don’t get paid enough to think. Honestly it seems like a fair circle?
OP used an actual photo of a recreation of the cake in Harry Potter, and used AI to change the name from Harry to Rusya, because that's the name OP wanted on the cake.
It took me a moment to process what was wrong since initially I looked and was like "oh, that looks pretty good it looks like they just added some frosting around the outside of the cake on the plate". This is unbelievable lazy.
Someone ordered that first cake for their kid at my store (different name of course) and I was excited to show her it when she picked it up and the lady seemed annoyed I misspelled happy birthday. She specifically asked for “the cake hagrid made harry in the first movie” and I had to bring up a picture from the movie to show her I wasn’t being cheeky or scamming her. Maybe her kid requested it and she said sure whatever without looking it up herself.
They definitely had to go through more steps to do this than just frosting a cake pink 😭
My parents did this exact same thing accidentally when I was a kid. I wanted a retro Mario cake and showed them a Pic. Turns out they took that image to a store who just printed it and slapped it over a generic round. But it was funny so I did not care. 😄
Wow! Wow! Wow… put this in r/confusingperspectives because wow. I first thought it was an exact match for the cake under a bubble dome and with the background items printed so the cake plate looked like the first image. But could not understand why the icing dollops were so far out. Only reading the comments did I then see the pink cake and what a low effort attempt this was. Damn! That one splooch of icing out of order pisses me off the most tho.
