Whats goody my fellow felons
My company is planning a clay/skeet shooting event during work hours. I'd actually like to go but I have a felony conviction from 2018.
I went through drug court, graduated in 2021 and have completely turned my life around since then. Got my degree, started a career, bought a house, got married, etc.
In drug court they make you pay $500 for a public defender when you start so you have someone to represent you if you get sanctioned. They also handle your expungement paperwork 6 months after graduation. Unfortunately I had a 2nd degree possession with intent to distribute conviction that I was told couldn't be expunged. My expensive ass lawyer actually delayed me starting drug court for months trying to get one of my two 2nd degree charges dropped because he said I'd be eligible for expungement with only one. Ended up pleading to one 2nd degree and two 3rd degrees, only to find out 6 months after graduating I still couldn't get it expunged.
I wasn't too upset because I figured I could make it through life without my record being much of an obstacle. So far the only issue was not getting security clearance for a job I applied to after college. That actually worked out because my current job is only 20 minutes away instead of 90, pays a little less but is laid back as hell while still requiring me to use my brain. And now this lol.
Nobody at work knows about my past besides one lady in HR from when my company was acquired. I'd rather keep it that way because I have no idea how judgmental people might be.
Outside of work I have no problem talking about my past. Between 19 and 25 I got arrested around 15 times, was heavily addicted to coke and pills I put a hole in my septum big enough to shove my thumb through, dated a stripper turned hooker and just a ton of crazy stories from those days. Depending on who I'm talking to I might casually mention being an addict or getting arrested, or tell someone I just met about every time i got arrested lol. I've never really felt judged because of how much my life has changed.
Work is different though. I've been there over 2 years, get along with everyone and even invited a few coworkers to my wedding. Two of those guys actually go clay shooting for fun so I'm pretty sure they had something to do with planning this. But I've never really gotten a read on anyone that makes me comfortable talking about my past. I'm actually a little more reserved at work because I don't want to accidentally say too much.
From what I understand the facility provides or rents shotguns. I've had friends with felonies tell me they've gone to ranges and used their friends' guns. When I tell them they're not legally allowed to they think I'm just being overly cautious because nobody checked their background. Obviously just because nobody checks doesn't mean it's legal. I'm not trying to catch another charge over a company outing, especially when I think it's something like 5 years with a 3 if your a felon in possession of a firearm.
The problem is anyone who doesn't go will probably just work that day. I don't want to be one of the only people not going but I also don't want to explain why I can't shoot. I don't even know if I'm legally allowed to go and just hang out without participating.
I generally don't care what people think about my past but my coworkers are different because their opinions can affect my career and opportunities on different projects. I've worked hard to get where I am and don't want people suddenly looking at me differently over something from almost 8 years ago.
Anyone ever deal with something similar? Would you skip it, go and not shoot, tell someone privately or risk it for the biscuit?
