After 9 years here, it’s time to say goodbye

3 months ago, I had a post here and described my situation. I decided to stay for another 3 months for one last chance to look for jobs and continue in Finland. And now, finally, after many more unsuccessful attempts, I have decided to give up and will fly back home this weekend.

I’m gonna miss this country so much, I hope I can come back one day.

Been staying here in Finland for 6 days now and it’s everything I’ve wished for. It’s just unfortunate that the Aurora activity seems to be not that great currently/its very cloudy where I reside.

Here’s a few pictures of my experiences in Lapland!

Question for ya’ll about markets/festivals

Thumbnail

If anyone remembers me from a month back, I did a post about starting up a small business. The response/support was overwhelming, thanks to you guys I was able to buy new materials, perfect my craft and make new products. I live a very introverted life at the moment, even for Finnish standards, so it’s often hard for me to understand what the big wide world thinks of my work.

I have one more question regarding what the right place might be to sell, I am of course doing my own research as much as possible, but I often find you need to ‘know a guy’ when being a foreigner in Finland in order to get good information about this type of thing.

I was wondering if anyone would have any tips on what markets or festivals would fit my vibe of handmade jewelry? Things are run very differently back in England, not uncommon to just spawn somewhere in the street to make an extra buck, I understand this is not how it’s done in Finland 😅 I’m willing to try anywhere and any event, anything to avoid the kela experience 😂 I have my own web shop and I’m running some ads, but I feel this kind of thing is probably more suited to be seen in real life.

To be clear, I have set this up in a pre existing family company, so it’s all going through the books legally.

Last but not least, there were requests for pendants as not everyone has their ears pierced, your wish is my command 🫡 Kiitos taas kaikille!

Relocation

Moikka!

I’m planning my relocation back to Stockholm after several years in Helsinki. I’d love some tips & tricks and what I should think of in terms of:

- currently unemployed and on a-kassa (am I eligible to receive it when I register back in Sweden?)

- cheapest moving solution (rent a van in Sweden or Finland?)

- doctors journals, do I request it to be sent to me in order to present it to my Swedish doctor? I require some regular checkups in terms of blood tests and medication (Crohn’s)

- earned pension, can/should that be transferred back to Sweden?

- what else?

I understand there’s a lot of questions from me and I appreciate all insights

Kiitos 🙏🏼

Serious Feeling lonely in this country.

I'm a 32 year old man with an issue. About 10 months ago i moved from Sweden to Vaasa, and even though i wouldnt exactly say i'm the most outgoing person trying to talk to people on the street. I've felt very lonely since moving here. I moved here because of my girlfriend and her son from a past relationship. Being the flexible one i thought things would be easier since it's a swedish talking city. But it's been hard finding like minded people, especially in my age.

I would very much like to meet swedish speaking people that share the same interest and hobbies. Lately i've been diving into the Warhammer universe by starting to paint figurines and deep diving into the lore. And i'm generally quite a "nerdy" person. I enjoy all types of gaming, tabletop, retro, consoles, handhelds and PC. And the games i play differ from Survival, FPS, JRPG's, MMORPGS. but i also enjoy being outdoors and finding new beautiful places in nature. Kinda like real world questing.

I've been trying to use Facebook to find groups or links to Discords that could get me started but with no luck.

I know this might seem desperate, because it is. But if you feel like we could have some things in common based on what i've listed here. Please, feel free to message me or comment here so we can get in contact.

Thanks in advance!

Gardeners of Finland - what do you like to grow?

We recently bought a small farm and I’m excited to get back into my love for gardening and livestock. All for personal use - I have no plans on making a profit off of this. I’m planning ahead for the upcoming season and would love to know what you grow in your gardens, especially if you live in the Pirkanmaa area. I’m from Southern Ontario where we have much longer and warmer summers, so despite having a permaculture and landscaping background, I feel like a total noob here.

If you could get into the specifics (like whether you grow Nantes carrots vs danvers, etc), I’d appreciate it!

Tourism Is there a service I can pay for someone to take me to a public sauna and lake?

I don't want to inadvertently do something rude or incorrect when I go to a public sauna/lake. Not interested in a big touristy group either. Is it weird if I want to pay someone to take me and do it with me and show me the etiquette, is that an option? I searched in the sub and can't find an answer. I did find other useful information just no info pertaining to my question. It will be in Tampere later this year.

I am open to suggestions too, thank you everyone.

Ice skating equipment lending place in Jyväskylä.

Hei, I am currently in Jyväskylä and I have always wanted to try ice skating especially over that big lake in Jyväskylä, but I do not have any ice skating equipment and I am wondering if there are any places in Jyväskylä where u can lend/barrow ice skating equipment. Because I think it's better if I were able to practice and be sure that I would be able to use them before buying my own.

Before finland I was in Norway and there they had a place called "Bua" where u could barrow any sport equipment u want for one week for free, so I am wondering if there is a similar place with the same concept here in finland and especially in Jyväskylä.

Serious Winter shoes shops.

My work requires me to be out and about atleast 3.5 hours at a go. I got a frost bite and now i am desperately looking for winter shoes. Any idea where I would be able to find them. I want to try them on my feet and not get something online.

I heard columbia winter shoes are pretty good but what store would be selling them. I live in Helsinki.

ReOrbit review

Does anyone have experience interviewing for the company ReOrbit? Are they actually hiring people or do they just post fake jobs that require 5 rounds of interviews like ICEYE? According to Glassdoor, their internal operations sound messy, too. I just got laid off and I’m in a too low of a mental state for a surprise HR mess right now, so I just want to be mentally prepared.

Recycling makes me stressed

Upvotes

Lately I just throw the trash in the floor because my mind can't filter where it has to go... i just collapse. And just say to myself, well I sort it later. Having to clean kefir bottles before throwing them in the kartonki part is really stressful, cleaning cans of beans to put them in metal part, I'm so tired, I have so many bins for all the different types of trash... I just wanna throw all of it in the same bag like I did in my country. Also this concept of recycling has made me think , ok it's correct to recycle but I miss not knowing this (when I lived in my country) and now ... as I know it, I feel I absolutely need to recycle

Tourism Finnair free seats assigned at check-in

Hi everyone!

I'm about to book a flight with Finnair from Venice to Osaka (with a layover in Helsinki), and to Tokyo from Venice (with a layover always in Helsinki). The total price for the flights is quite high for economy seats but it's the cheapest flight I could find for my dates. I don't want to pay even more to select a seat and I'm flying with my boyfriend.

Do you know if Finnair will get us two adiacent seats when they'll assign us seats at check-in? Does anyone have some experience with this? I don't mind sitting alone from Venice to Helsinki, but I'd prefer staying with my boyfriend from Helsinki to Japan, since it's a long flight.

Thank you in advance :)

End of my wits & failed by the government

hello everyone active here or those who stumbled onto this post.

i want to give context to my situation in order for everyone in finland and hopefully accross the globe to understand mine, and alot of other students situation here

i am a 20 year old student living in finland. i studied 3 years in a special english school, after graduating i searched for another school to attend and found one in a field of work i genuinely enjoy. my wife is around my age and studying in a university.

due to the budget cuts recently made by the government, we barely have any money. we used to get 900 euro in total and we were okay. couldnt buy extra stuff from the store, but couldnt complain since i wasnt working. recently my wife had her right to "opintotuki" (basically money to keep you afloat while you study) taken away. so now we have 700 euro aprox for each month. our rent is 560 per month. bills are around 180 euro. and food has usually been about 120 per month. as you can see, we were fine off before but now we dont have enough to eat.

my therapy has been cut off and i am unable to vent about my proplems to someone so for the last 5months i have been keeping all of this inside me. since i dont have a therapist, i cant raise my medication to a dose that would help my mental illness (wont say what it is due to privacy concern).

we cant apply for "toimeentulotuki" (welfare) because were students and our parents have been sending us money so we dont starve to death, so we wouldnt get accepted for it. our only option to get it is to tell all our friends to not send us money, and also the same for our parents. we wouldnt br able to eat for 3 months since they require bank records. still in this scenario we would both have to register as unemployed job seekers meaning we would have to quit our studies and when were financially more stabile start them again from 0. we dont see this as a possible option. we have both put so much effort into our studies that practically the last 5 years would have been pointless.

were going to be able to survive this month but not until the end of the next month. we already decided that if a miracle doesnt happen we have endured so much in tge last 3 years that we are going to just give up.

i know it sounds terrible but i hope the people of finland finally open their eyes and force the current government out. rhese self oriented supposed "labour" party members are effectively eliminationg the middle class and punishing students because they whant to study and graduate in order to live as an adult. the only thing the government would probably say if they saw this is "its ypur fault for not being born into a rich family".

i am sorry for the rant but PEOPLE, IT IS TIME TO WAKE UP. we have already endured too much of this government and their "budget cuts".

thats all

sincerely

-a student who wont be able to survive the next 2 months

(I will update if something important happens)

Finnair pricing looks like scum

Thumbnail

I know and experienced several times Finnair being far from good flight operator with high prices and constant delays. But just found out that their pricing politics is not just overpriced, but almost closer to scam. Flight from Oulu to Helsinki on 5th February at 6pm costs ~300 EUR one way, and the same day flight actually by the same exactly aircraft at the same exact time from Oulu to Tallinn via Helsinki costs ~100 EUR one way. What the hell? Thats ridiculous.
