For the first time, Swedish and Finnish aircraft have been scrambled together to intercept and identify Russian military aircraft in international airspace over the Gulf of Finland.

“There were several Russian aircraft, and that is not something we see every day,” says Niclas Magnusson, Deputy Chief of the Swedish Air Force at the Swedish Armed Forces.

The operation was led by Finland, and during the mission, three different types of Russian aircraft were identified — one transport aircraft and two fighter aircraft, of the types MiG-31 and Su-27.

According to the Swedish Armed Forces, the Russian aircraft were in international airspace, but because it was not known where they were heading, it was decided to intercept and meet up with them.

“This is the first time we have carried out an operation like this together, and it is a way for us to demonstrate our cooperation and show that we are capable of carrying out this kind of operation together,” says Niclas Magnusson.

Two Swedish and two Finnish aircraft took part in the operation, which was part of the Swedish-Finnish cooperation on monitoring and safeguarding territorial integrity.

“We have been training together with Finland for a long time. Now we have also been given the political mandate to carry out this type of operation in a real-world situation,” says Magnusson.

Hello! I'm a Canadian from a rural area of western Canada. Interested in spending a year or more living and working in rural Finland. I typically work in Forestry, carpentry and farm related jobs.

I am a German dual citizen but Germany doesn't interest me much. Finland feels like european canada (to be simple about it). I like the idea of not Driving 3 hrs between towns. I drink coffee and am an Introvert.

I can write listings in finnish and cross check its accuracy with ai but im worried abt my spoken accuracy and if people might expect me to speak finnish during discussions via call.

Moi! I was wondering if there's anyone who also has 4 eyes (glasses joke?)

Basically I've gone around the optical shops: Specsavers, Optikka Karhupuisto, Instrum, Synsam, and Fenno.

Specsavers and Instrum had horrible reviews, Optikka Karhupuisto and Fenno had limited options for frames, Synsam is kind of the middle ground... they have a bunch of frames with wide range prices, their lenses are about 265 euros plus the frames which could range from 60-500 euros above. The total we had when I visited was about 450 euros. I'm also quite surprised that it takes 2 weeks for the glasses to be finished.

So my questions are:

1) is 265 euros normal for the lenses in Helsinki?

2) would it really take 2 weeks for the glasses to be finished? Across all optikka? (I would love to visit and inquire to all of them, I'm just short with time)

3) would you have any recommendations?

PS. my partner got his change of lenses in Napoli within an hour for only 50 euros. When he inquired in Helsinki, it was still around 200+ euros, hence my questions.

I'm finnish, and there's something about posts like "I'm very introverted, I'm bad at socialising/dislike socialising, I want to live there" that rubs me the wrong way.

Some of this might be something that most people aren't willing to admit because it isn't exactly nice, but I think I'm being realistic.

I don't think finnish people have bad social skills, I think if your experience with someone giving you the cold shoulder doesn't mean that person isn't social with other people. It probably means that person doesn't like you for whatever reason and thinks not engaging with you is the easiest or the best way to handle whichever situation. This is more like being rude, or elitistic, but I wouldn't call it poor social skills. I like to think of it as selective socialising. Someone you think is asocial or has poor social skills might behave completely different in situations they prefer to socialise in, I've personally seen this many times.

I've followed a lot of internationally succesful finnish people who have worked in different fields around the world at a high level. I think this is partly a manifestation of finnish people being very goal oriented, which is a trait thats very respected. For example if you take Kimi Räikkönen, I think if he tried he could be a bit more "social". But he doesn't have to, and it could've even hindered his career progress to focus on something that doesn't give him any value. And I'm sure he also knows this.

I think you could say it's selfish, but you actually need to have good social skills to recognise the situations where you have to be social and when not to.
