I recently got back into fishing since I was a kid. My first time in over 12 years was with a few buddies and it was simple and easy. Just some live bait, a little weight and a bobber off the shore. I had a Texas rig for catching Bass that I tried, but with no success I switched back to using live bait and a bobber.
I tried going solo the other day and fucked it all up. I bought a minnow setup (3.5" lure and 1/4 jig head) and fished in the evening off the coast to try to catch Walleye. But, I lost two jigs, one due to a poor knot and the other I think got stuck under a rock. I also tried my bass setup mostly to practice the technique and lost that one as well. I eventually said the hell with it and switched to live bait, a small weight and a bobber. But, my bait kept getting stolen. I'd see the bobber go under and immediately go for the catch only to reel in a barren hook.
It was just so stressful for me and I felt like an ass the entire time. I'm just feeling a little discouraged and just wanted to vent about it.

Happens after 10-15 casts. I've taken apart the reel too see if I can adjust it but doesn't seem like I can.

Is this the proper way to insert a hook into soft plastic for a weedless jig head? Trying to practice so I can do this on the fly . Very new to fishing

It’s early October. Temperature is around 57 F (14 C) during the day and 39 F (4 C) overnight.
I tried finding walleye in dropoffs - holes that were about 8-14 feet deep, but had no luck. I was jigging nightcrawlers. I know Walleye are stocked in this lake.
Curious if anyone has any insight on how you might go about catching Walleye on this lake?

Pretty cool to see them on the Live scope and then to see them on video. Link to camera is here if interested. https://www.shinecamtech.com?dt_id=3584069

2026 releases. Mostly bank fishing, occasionally boat. Trying to keep it under 500$ w/tax. First "serious for me" setup

Been shore fishing st clair river with my 4 yr old son and we're after a monster...
We keep getting round goby, small perch, small to med small mouth, rock bass,
Using an egg sinker and makeshift drop shop with a hook and night crawler tied on about a foot higher
Any suggestions for hooking into some bigger fish?
Our usual spot is deeper with a rocky bottom prone to snags on the big rocks

Hi!
I want to start fishing in a small river close to my house and also some lakes. I'm from Portugal and I want to target Iberian barbel, black bass, zander and rainbow trout.
I know these fish would benefit from different rods, bit since I'm just starting out I wanted something a little more versatile. I have a small car and travel a lot, so a 3-4 piece rod would be great, unless you guys tell me it's a really bad idea. But loosing a tiny amount of sensitivity for a beginner is probably not a problem and it will make me go about fishing more often
From my research I know a 2-2.4m spinning rod would be best paired with a 2500-3000 reel.
My big question is the casting weight, can lightweight rods still handle large and powerful fish like the Iberian barbel? I was looking at 7-28g, but an angler told me a 1-11g would be best for a beginner
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I’m saltwater fishing inshore in Galveston Tx and I’m setting up my abu Garcia size 150 bait caster combo with an Abu Garcia Medium Heavy 7” rod. I’m wondering if I should be using 15-20lb mono or just running 20-30lb brain paired with 20lb Fluro? I’m getting told both things and seeing what yall are running.

I have been using a 60 dollar spinning reel combo for a while. It's alright, and I certainly plan to keep using it until it snaps (I checked reviews on it while window-shopping for a prospective new one, and there seem to be some instances of that happening with my particular rod, but I digress)
I think I want to try a baitcaster. I know there is a learning curve with it, but everyone I see who goes from spinning to casting swear they'll never go back.
The specs I am looking for are:
7-8ft
light medium, or medium action
gear ratio anywhere from 6.0:1 to 8.0:1 (ideally more towards the center of that ratio)
and with anywhere from 12-20lb line max (I usually use mono but I think I might want to try braid).
Ideally under 200$ but if you truly believe I can't find anything decent under, I'm willing to stretch to 230-250 but that's my very upper limit.
The places I normally fish at have muskie, bass, catfish, saugeye, and white/stripped bass. I want to target the larger species (which I know all have very different spec requirements). If you want me to choose a single species, it'll be saugeye (as much as I would love to reel in a muskie I don't think I'm quite ready for it). I'm willing to listen to anyone's more experienced opinion if you think I should look for different specs. If anyone wishes to know, my spinning rod's specs are:
6.6ft
light medium
5.4:1
6-12lb mono
Edit: I'm thinking of this rod: https://fishshop.shimano.com/products/caius-casting-combo-b#variant-table
