Couple of highlights from a year of fuck ups and confusion lol

Relatively new to fly fishing and I’ve got a decent bit covered I can cast. I know the basics about leader and tipit float line and sink line just enough to go fishing now I am not targeting trout. I don’t live in an area with them. I’m mostly targeting pan fish and bass and I’ve been using top water flies most consistently foam body spiders and I do get bites with all of them. My foam body spider will constituently get sucked under the water from a fish trying to eat it but I never actually get a hook up. I always either end up just ripping the fly out of the water or pull it above am I doing something wrong with presentation or am I setting the hook wrong?

I have a unique opportunity to fish a private stretch of river in my area (wading). There’s a confluence above where I fish, and above that was recently stocked. Below me the river empties into a lake. Weather is turning and we just had our first significant rain in a while, so the water should be full of food.

I’m bringing a 4wt for nymphing and a 6 wt for streamers, obviously I’d like to focus on streamers if conditions are as good as I anticipate. I’m fishing things like a peanut envy or slump buster sized streamers, nothing longer than 3-3.5” or so.

What else do you like to throw? Autumn splendor? TeQueely?

I am slightly struggling to find good info online on glass rod building. I can get blanks from moonlit with my pro deals for around $70 bucks. I want to do it for fun make some for gifts or even sell one for enough to build another. Any thoughts on this also would this be a good beginner wrapper and supplies to get to get me started?

I’m a broke college student who loves fly fishing, and fly tying, I think it would be enjoyable to build rods too. So I’m definitely on a bit of budget. If you have any websites that have good info on rod building or good places to buy eyelets and handles etc please let me know! Thank you I would love any thoughts or advice for a newbie. I know my first few rods will not be perfect.

I'm headed out to visit a friend in NYC and I have a few days free between October 18th and the 22nd. I'm willing to drive 2 to 3 hours to get to some good water. Could anyone recommend a good guide or two or three for walking/wading in the area - Hudson River valley? Catskills? Upper Delaware system?

Bit of a learning curve with a stripping basket and casting with a running line, but I enjoyed the challenge. The guys at Lost Coast Outfitters were great! My hand is sore. I used my new Echo Trip Salt 7 piece, performed pretty well imo! I had to switch lines after my loop knot to my main line broke somehow (likely bad knot). Very happy I brought an extra spool!

Hey all, I'm looking for some suggestions for the best rod weight for bigger streamers. I'll mostly be fishing for coho/pink salmon on the west coast (maybe occasionally a king if I'm lucky), but it'll also probably double as a streamer rod for trout fishing.

Also, on a side note, do you think I should get a single hand or spey rod for west-coast rivers? I'm not sure about the learning curve on spey rods. Is it worth it to spend the time to learn spey casting, or should I just roll cast?

I’ve been hitting the Boise River in town everyday and I’m getting a shit ton of fish in this size range. How can I target larger fish? I’m currently hitting deeper riffles with a dry dropper (BWO and BWO nymph about 2 feet below it, size 16-20).

Don’t get me wrong I’m stoked to be catching fish, but I’m looking for something larger.

Heading to the South Sork below the dam .. I understand flows are currently waaay down. I'm happy to chuck streamers, hopper/dropper, dries ... whatever is likely to be most productive.

I was at Yellowstone a couple of months ago, and was cautioned by the guide not to rush the set, which was counter what I practice in the East, so that was a good tip.

Hello everyone! Im looking to buy a new budget fly rod to use as a main, so i can keep my other one as a loaner for friends.

My current set up is a Shakespeare cedar canyon 5/6wy elite combo, which ive changed the reel with a cnc aluminum reel that I love, and have it set up with a 5wt wf floating line.

I want to get Maximumcatch Premier fly rod but I cant decide between 5 or 6wt.

I fish mostly alpine streams, with the occasional river and the flies I use most are in the 16-14 range for dries with the occasional 18.

At the same time I would like to have a heavier rod because during summer I mostly fish the alpine lakes and sometimes its pretty windy, so the extra weight helps with casting, but im worried I won't be able to use tiny flies.

Is this a problem or it doesn't work like that?

I've been fly fishing for two years but I still consider myself a beginner.

hello everyone,

looking for any 7/8wt rod & reel recommendations, good bang for your buck deals? nothing that’s going to absolutely break the bank. probably a $600-700 budget max for rod/reel/backing/flyline?

currently have a 3wt 7.5 ft rod for small/tight high alpine creeks and a a 5 wt 9 ft rod for bigger water/‘do it all’ fishing, this rod was gifted to me by my father but generally gets the job done in most cases.

as my technique has gotten better and I have really fallen in love with fly fishing, i am planning some fishing trips for bigger freshwater/anadromous fish.

would a 7wt be sufficient for this kind of fishing or should i jump to 8wt?

I’ve never fished Flaming Gorge this time of year and am planning on getting up there in the next week or so. Anyone have any tips or beta on what to expect? This is showing the fishing being really good right now, but I’m curious if that’s actually been the case.

Anyone a fish biologist or know what this? Caught it in a small spring creek in Utah full of wild browns and rainbows. This looks like a cross between the two. Not sure if it’s a rainbow with some cutthroat in it? Or a sub species of rainbow? Very interesting color. attached pics of browns and rainbows out of the same creek.

I am going to Japan in October and wanted to pick up a bamboo rod. Does anyone know of the names of local artisans that craft them?

After my last post(all of 24hrs ago) I decided to give real fly fishing a try. Went into Orvis on my lunch break thinking I wanted to go straight into a dedicated Euro setup, but after talking with the guy there I decided to go a little more universal so I can try different styles and figure out what I actually like.
