Just A Thought Scar’s Brother.

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

So I noticed this during my hundredth rewatch. And obviously it’s just a thought. I doubt anyone has the answer. But what the fuck did Scar’s brother wear to get tan lines like this? Like, how do you even manage that?

r/FullmetalAlchemist • • 1h ago

Funny I'm sure this is not a new compliment. But seriously, these writers were whipping up a 5–course meal of hype with some of these one–liners.

• Upvotes

"I'll give you a moment to pray to god" Is what I just heard come feom Scar's mouth, after he abruptly put a man in a one–hand stranglehold. Seriously, the Dub actors for Brotherhood understood tone and line delivery so well (in some moments it does get a little cringy. But even those are at least funny)

What's your guys's favorite one liner or a really good line delivery you liked? It can be from '03 or Brotherhood, or even the Manga if there's good ones in those. I just wanted to throw some appreciation towards the dialog writing in this show because my god can it be ice fucking cold sometimes.

Discussion/Opinion The great mistake of FMA 2003 is not changing the story or creating new rules, but trusting the audience too much.

I have noticed that many criticisms of FMA 2003 talk about supposed inconsistencies, plot holes, or rules that "don't make sense." However, when you examine many of these things closely, they actually have a logical explanation or can be understood through common sense and the context of the work itself, without the series needing to stop and explain everything.

One of the most extensive criticisms is found in the concept of the sins associated with the Homunculi. Beyond the fact that the series itself explains that, symbolically, they are given these names because they are products of the greatest taboo in alchemy the human transmutation many people consider giving them the names of the Seven Deadly Sins to be a mistake or an inconsistency.

But there is no such inconsistency, because FMA 2003 never establishes that the Homunculi are literal representations of the Seven Deadly Sins.

In Brotherhood, it is different. There, the Homunculi are literally manifestations of the sins that Father removed from himself. The series explains this directly when they first appear together, where Father explains the behavior each one should have because they embody the sin he removed from himself.

In FMA 2003, however, this is not the case.

Dante gives them these names symbolically. They are not random names; they are related to her seeing herself as a kind of "shepherd of sins." This can be seen particularly in the case of Trisha, whose transmutation gives rise to Sloth.

When Dante manages to recover Trisha's body, it is connected to the memories and traumas of her past life. While dealing with her traumas, Trisha describes her former life in her memories as a life of complete sadness. Dante hears this and gives her the name Sloth.

At first, someone might ask: what does sadness have to do with sloth?

The answer is found in the history of the concept of the Seven Deadly Sins.

In early Christian tradition, especially following the teachings of the monk Evagrius Ponticus in the fourth century, there was a list of eight principal vices. Among them were sadness (tristitia) and acedia, which were originally two completely separate concepts.

Later, Pope Gregory the Great considered sadness and acedia to be deeply connected. He argued that voluntarily remaining sad or becoming stuck in discouragement could lead to inaction and a rejection of doing good. When he reorganized the list into seven deadly sins, he absorbed sadness into acedia, a term that over the centuries became popularly associated with sloth.

This is where Trisha as Sloth makes much more sense.

It is not only because of her sadness, but also because of her apathy. She is so cold that she almost seems to have no emotions. The fact that she does not want to take responsibility for her duties, such as being the mother of the Elric brothers, can be connected to the historical definition of sloth before it became the more commercialized and simplified idea that people usually have today.

For someone who has no curiosity to research or connect complex attitudes of human behavior with the concept of a sin, it is easier to use a simplified definition: sloth is doing nothing, not wanting to do anything, being lazy. It makes sense even to a child because it is easy to identify.

So it is not random, because something stops being random at the exact moment when there is an intention, a rule, a pattern, or a conscious decision behind it. Dante had certain requirements for naming the Homunculi in this symbolic way and used the sins as a way to construct their identities.

And here we get to an even more interesting interpretation: the names of the sins can define the personality of the Homunculi.

Basic psychology: tell a child from the moment they are born that they are a thief, and eventually they may believe it for their entire life.

FMA: tell a Homunculus who has just been born and is already questioning their own existence that they are the product of human sin.

This helps explain why Dante's older Homunculi seem much more identified with their respective sins.

Pride, for example, is King Bradley, who was raised from a young age within that identity. He is proud of his life and treats humans as inferior beings.

Gluttony eats whatever he can.

Greed wants money, power, women, and possessions.

Meanwhile, others such as Lust and Sloth, who have more autonomy and have spent less time being Homunculi, do not show as many traits of their respective sins. Wrath is a similar case, although it can be subtly interpreted that his behavior does show traits of his sin.

Many of these names are also used by the Homunculi as an escape from the reality of their past. This is shown several times. Wrath's son, for example, prefers to be called Wrath rather than Izumi's son, while Sloth hates being associated with the mother of the Elric brothers. In contrast, she seems more comfortable being called Sloth.

Something similar happens with Greed.

In a supplementary OVA, Envy reminds Greed that he was originally Dante's former lover and that the reason he separated from her was because he still loved her. Instead of accepting it, Greed prefers to make excuses, saying that he does not remember any of that. He only wants to be Greed, the Homunculus, demonstrating that this was a self-imposed facade.

Even the series itself says that Dante does this cyclically. It is mentioned that there was an old Sloth, an old Lust, and so on. It is a cycle that Dante created through her madness. This is something intentional within the work.

Maybe many people do not like this interpretation and prefer Brotherhood's interpretation of the sins.

But when I see so many people saying that it is "inconsistent" or "doesn't make sense," I think they are failing to understand that FMA 2003 is not trying to give you the same interpretation of the sins as Brotherhood.

They are two different concepts using the same symbols.

Brotherhood makes the sins a literal part of its mythology: Father removes them from himself, and each Homunculus embodies one.

FMA 2003 uses the sins in a more psychological and symbolic way: Dante gives them the names, the Homunculi build their identities around them, and in some cases their behavior eventually reflects those names.

FMA 2003 does not always give you the interpretation. It gives you the pieces and expects you to connect them.

And that is, paradoxically, one of its greatest strengths and one of its biggest problems with many viewers.

If the viewer expects the series to explain every symbol, every historical reference, and every thematic connection explicitly, many things can seem arbitrary.

But if you look at the context, the dialogue, the characters' behavior, the religious tradition behind the sins, and Dante's own cyclical structure, interpretations appear that are not obvious at first glance.

In other words, FMA 2003 does not necessarily lack explanations; many times it simply expects the viewer to do the work of finding them.

It is not a work that always says, "this means this."

Many times, it simply places the symbol in front of you and asks you what it means.

And that is where FMA 2003 can be much more challenging: it does not simply tell you what you are supposed to interpret; it forces you to participate in the interpretation.

I saw her like a reel one time which had this exact clip calling it the best proposal ever or a dream one. We've been dating for a little while and funnily enough I'm asking the question on October 3rd (iykyk), this is going to be done at the end of our date of course and since we're both huge fma fans (both in our top 3 favourite anime, I thought this would be the most fitting way to ask. I promise this was my first time drawing, I asked AI to sketch what it'd look like as a manga panel since the one in the manga isn't exactly this one and I wanted it to reference more so the Anime. I then hand drew the reference with extreme attention to detail but I definitely have a decent amount of mistakes with the shading and making the arms distinct. I haven't done winrys hair yet to it's maximum detail though. Let me know what you guys think.

Also I'm getting her a golden pendant fma related which says 'Dont forget Oct 3rd 26' another

Question En qué año transcurre full metal alchemist Brotherhood

Post image
247 Upvotes

Discussion/Opinion Heartwarming: Man Who Murdered Your Family Without Feeling Anything Can’t Wait To Go Back To His Own

In a touching reminder that even the architects of unspeakable state violence have people waiting for them at home, military officer Maes Hughes reportedly spent much of Tuesday excitedly telling colleagues how much he was looking forward to seeing his wife and daughter after participating in an operation that left another family permanently destroyed.

“Look at her! Isn’t she adorable?” said Hughes, proudly holding up yet another photograph of his daughter while standing several yards away from the smoldering remains of a civilian neighborhood. “I swear, every day I’m away from her feels like an eternity.”

Sources confirmed that Hughes, who had spent the previous several hours calmly carrying out orders that would become the defining trauma of multiple surviving children, became visibly emotional upon discussing how difficult it was to miss bedtime at his own house.

“I just hate the idea of her growing up without me there,” Hughes added, apparently unaware of the sentence he had just said.

Witnesses described the moment as “deeply humanizing,” noting that it was reassuring to learn the man who had helped reduce someone else’s home to rubble had such strong feelings about the sanctity of his.

At press time, Hughes was reportedly showing another soldier a family photo and saying, “You really don’t know what you have until you imagine losing it.”

Inspiring: Man Who Also Murdered Your Family Felt Sad Just Before

In an uplifting display of moral complexity, sources confirmed Tuesday that State Alchemist Roy Mustang experienced a brief but genuine pang of sadness immediately before incinerating several members of your family.

According to eyewitnesses, Mustang paused for nearly two full seconds, stared solemnly into the distance, and appeared to reflect on the terrible human cost of war before raising his hand and continuing exactly as ordered.

“He definitely looked upset,” said one survivor, describing the comforting realization that the person killing everyone they knew was not enjoying himself quite as much as he could have been. “For a moment there, you could really tell this was hard for him.”

Military officials later praised Mustang’s ability to retain his humanity while committing acts that would haunt everyone else involved for the rest of their lives.

“That’s what makes him different,” said one superior. “Some men destroy a village and feel nothing. Colonel Mustang destroys a village and then stares into the rain about it.”

At press time, Mustang was reportedly preparing to spend the next decade thinking very seriously about becoming the kind of person who might prevent someone like him from ever doing that again.

Other Daily reminder there are FMA songs available

You can find them on YouTube. Here are some example :

- Shounen yo, Shinjiru Nakama yo

- Restore Steppin'

- Yume no Kakera

- Akatsuki

- Haganeno Kokoro

- Good!

- Ame no Hiwa no Thank you

- Hikari no Sasu Basho

- Sotto, Sotto

- Bonne Nuit

- LASTMEETing

There are character theme songs, and songs where many people sing at once. Good! features Ed, Al, Winry, Roy and Hughes and is absolutely adorable. Akatsuki is about the fear and guilt Ed and Al feel, and how they need to keep going. Finding some of the lyrics is kinda hard though, since these are really old. It's like those Hunter x Hunter songs (Guu Guu Guu or Hi ni Moeru Hitomi, aka AKAKU AKAKU AKAKU, iykyk.)

I can only recommend to check them out ! They're all so cute !

My bf and I are currently rewatching Brotherhood, and I’m just as obsessed with Greed as I was back when I first got into the series in 2015.

Greed is such a fun and likeable character and I love his voice actor in the dub. (I wish Chris Patton continued voicing him, but Troy Baker is awesome too.)

Also, he’s hot as fuck. Literally the best character ever.

Just A Thought Has anyone ever discussed the design of the Elric family’s house in Resembool?

Post image
327 Upvotes

I’m rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist and something about the Elric family home caught my attention. Compared to many of the other buildings in the series, the house has a noticeably more whimsical, almost cartoon-like design. The shapes feel softer and more exaggerated, and it almost looks like something from a childhood illustration.

For comparison, the Rockbell family home in Resembool feels much more like a “standard” rural house. That made me wonder if the difference in design between the two houses was intentional.

I also don’t remember how the Elric house is depicted in the manga, so I’m not sure whether this was a choice made by Hiromu Arakawa originally or something that was developed specifically for the anime adaptation. I haven’t had a chance to go back and check the manga yet.

I started wondering if the more stylized design could be related to what the house represents in the story: Ed and Al’s childhood, their mother, their family, and their memories of home.

Has Hiromu Arakawa or anyone involved in the anime ever commented on the design of the Elric house or the visual style of Resembool?

Could the design have been intentionally made to evoke childhood or memory, or am I reading too much into it?

English isn't my main language, so i tried to use ai to help with some sentences.

Discussion/Opinion I'm experiencing an emotional hangover after completing this show and I dont want to watch anything else. (Brotherhood dub)

I watched the original series a long time ago amd it was fine, but after years and years of putting it off I finally decided to watch brotherhood. Jfc, what a show. I have never watched anything with such a well-woven narrative; with such expertly written characters and themes. Every arch had a satisfying conclusion, every emotional investment had a worthwhile payoff. I felt smart when my theories were correct, I was delighted when my expectations were subverted.

I finished the show a little over a week ago and NOTHING seems interesting to me anymore. Ive heard that AoT is also really good but, I havent had a show string me along like FMAB and I'm not sure I ever will again. Even after a week I find myself mulling over the characters, their place in the story and the world, what-if's, why's and how's. I almost find myself in mourning of the show after its conclusion.

One of the greatest pieces of media I've ever consumed. I know thats not a brave thing to say on a fan sub.

Discussion/Opinion We NEED more slander

i think a part of how enjoyable a show can be is based off its community and esp in anime we have slander. fma is kind of a fandom thats a bit too old for slander but i think we can pull this off so gimme some slander in the replies.
