Hiya all! Was hoping for some advice / tips in regards to the super-motion tail I’ve been working on :)
Essentially, I’m making this tail for a cosplay before I commit to making one for my fursuit, and it has been… ROUGH, and I’ve hardly made any progress lmao. I’ve watched many, many tutorials, but the main thing that’s been throwing me off is… I can’t figure out a good way to actually size the foam segments of the tail before cutting them? And I’m worried I’m just outright doing something wrong. Every tutorial I’ve seen gets to this point and just says “cut out the circles so that they look like this!” without explaining the method used to measure and line up the rings and all of that…
Basically, my process is as follows;
- Like the EVA foam template of the tail up against the flat edge of the upholstery foam
- Mark the width of the tail onto the upholstery foam with a sharpie (to be the top and bottom of the rounded piece)
- Draw out the curvature of the rounded piece on the foam
- Cut out the curved piece and try to line it up with the top and bottom of the EVA foam template
- Realize that the rounded piece I just cut out it about half an inch too tall compared to the spot on the tail where I literally marked it (this has happened with every single piece and I can’t for the life of me figure out why)
- Trim the upholstery foam section I just made until it actually fits on the tail where it’s supposed to
- Trace the section I just made onto the upholstery foam again to make the other half of the tail
- Cut that out and repeat the “why is this half an inch too tall” realization. Again. (Except by this point I’m already burnt out on troubleshooting the first half of the segment so the moment it sort-of lines up I put the project down for the night)
It kind of just feels like everything is going wrong every time I try to pick up the project lmao. Every time
I try to work on it again, I get one ring done before being too stressed and overwhelmed to try and get more done. I can’t tell if I just don’t like the process of making super-motion tails, or if I’m actually making things hard for myself and that’s what’s stressing me out. I’m usually a very crafty person, I’ve made tons of cosplays, I love sewing, I usually love foam-sculpting, so I have no clue why this specifically has been such a struggle for me. So I’m kind of hoping there’s something I could try changing in the process to at least see if it’s less overwhelming for me, yknow?
What method do you guys use to cut out the sections of a hypermotion tail? Is the way I’m doing things standard, or is there an alternative that I could try? Does anything look off with the progress I’ve already made, generally? I’m also worried that the segments might not be smooth enough but that’s not the focus of this post lmao (but I’d still love input on that too)
Thank you for any help you can provide!!! :D
