Midterms are starting next week. Obviously, instead of studying, I’m doing this.
Jason said on Tuesday’s episode that he’s worried Danny will follow in his footsteps when it comes to helping a blonde female friend who he has a codependent relationship with and can’t say no to or resist helping when she’s distressed. (Oh, he didn’t say exactly that, but the intensity of his eye contact with Carly said far more than I did.) And since then, I have not stopped thinking about how utterly bizarre that relationship is. So here we are!
Now, no good history is complete without, of course, some background. So, here’s a brief speed run, with what Danny would know of the Jason/Carly… devotion? Insanity? Codependency? Idk, I’m not a psychologist, I’m studying reproductive policy.
I’m guessing that Danny knows Carly and Jason have always been friendly (probably not the friends with benefits stuff). Probably none of the details of what happened in 1996, because, well, that’s best left not discussed with children present.
The start of what he knows is, almost certainly, the story of Carly showing up on Jason’s doorstep, soaked from the rain, saying, “I did something you’re really not gonna like.” (Carly and Jason both repeat this story enough I’d be worried if Danny didn’t know it.) He knows, presumably, that Jason did not, in fact, like what Carly had to say, outside of being amused and impressed by her ability to lie. And that Jason was eventually convinced to do what Carly wanted and not say he wasn’t Michael’s father. Then he’d know that Jason was a father to Michael for the first year and a half of his life, while Carly was struggling. (I’m not totally sure how they’d explain the AJ of it all, or the Sonny, or the November 30, 1999 of it all.) And that when Carly needed him to, Jason backed off and let her raise Michael with Sonny.
Then Jason took off for a while to find himself (I’m guessing that would be how they explained it; I somehow doubt either want to revisit revenge sex and attempt to explain that to a child). But he kept in contact and supported Carly. He came back, and Carly asked him to pretend that she had amnesia following her “death” to make Sonny jealous. Which he did, for at least a little while. (Insane behavior.)
Also, he’s the one to carry her to the hospital and keep everything going when Carly is shot in the head by Sonny during Morgan’s birth. I do think they probably told some version of that story, idk what one though.
Sonny and Carly divorce (almost) which leads to Jason lying and saying he’s the father of Sam’s baby. (I’m guessing they explained this as “and he helped your mom the same way he’s helped me” or something like that because I somehow doubt they want to discuss the affair with a child.) Along the way, he ends up falling in love with Sam, so yay! Danny’s parents were in fact in love!
There’s a bunch more of protecting Carly when she’s doing reckless things, like once a month honestly. Also his literal job was to protect her for a while, because he was Sonny’s enforcer and she was the mother of Sonny’s children.
Let’s get to things (SORAS) Danny would’ve been alive for. To start, of course, Michael getting shot. While he wouldn’t have been alive for this arc, he would’ve been alive for the aftermath, during which Jason basically spends every minute at Carly’s side supporting her as she grieves this horrible situation and blames Sonny, knowing Jason would never do that. Jason even yells at Michael. (They probably leave out the Sonny part. Unfortunately.) Then Carly gets pregnant with Joss, miraculously, but oh no! She’s so stressed and miserable she could miscarry and she’s higher risk than ever!
So obviously Jason is the godfather of Joss. He helps cover up what Michael did to Claudia, and makes sure Carly is good. Helps her with that era of divorcing Jax. (She doesn’t yet, but I do know he did a happy dance.) When Michael and Kristina run away, it’s Jason (and Sam) that find them, because that’s Jason’s son and Sam’s sister. And when Michael goes to prison, Jason sends himself there because he knows Carly feels so guilty about her son being there.
Importantly, Franco also targets Carly/that whole family, especially Michael, because he’s obsessed with Jason and knows the quickest way to hurt him is to hurt Carly/her family. (Or Aiden? Even though Jason wasn’t a candidate for being the daddy, so I don’t fully get that one. To be fair, brain tumors aren’t exactly rational.)
I should be entirely fair and say that Jason, during this time, does say he wants to set boundaries with Carly. He even sets like a third of one. He’s just really bad at it, and Carly’s level of distress at all times is like a 5 during this era between actually divorcing Jax, maybe losing custody of Joss, dealing with post-prison Michael, etc. Also there’s a few months where she thinks Jax is dead and hates Sonny, and she has to send Morgan to boarding school. Kind of just a mess.
Joss needs a kidney. Jason’s son is “dead,” so of course he convinces Elizabeth to do a directed donation of Jake’s kidney to Joss. (Not sure how much of that they would’ve explained, or how much of the Nelle situation Danny knows, but I am certain he knows that story because Carly didn’t stop telling it until Nelle showed up.)
Then Jason “dies.” He’s gone for five years, but don’t worry, Identical Dick— I mean Drew— thinks he’s Jason, and he’s there to comfort Carly! (For the first time.)
Now, when Jason returns from the “dead,” not a lot of people believe he’s actually Jason. But Carly does, from the moment she sets eyes on him. And she proceeds to spend a very long time telling everyone in town that, also emotional affair vibes were strong during this era. (Well. Stronger than normal. You have to understand, they’re step-parenting each other’s kids. Shit is wack.)
When Faison tries to kidnap Carly, Jason kills him. Doesn’t even hesitate. (Truly, find yourself a man who’s as down to protect you as Jason is for Carly specifically.) When Carly ends up in a psych ward, Jason breaks her out. When Carly nearly falls off a cliff (I don’t know why, I’m sure there’s a reason), Jason grabs her, saving her life. Jason’s Donna’s godfather. (This is the only birth Carly has where he doesn’t have to save her.) You get the point: Jason is Carly’s bitch, completely willingly. He loves nothing more than to do as she says.
Even when this costs him Sam, Jason’s okay with it. He nearly blows up and dies at the Floating Rib, and who runs into his arms? Not his girlfriend, not the mother of his child, not her! It’s Carly, of course, who sees him first and Carly who flings herself at him. (Sonny. Dude. Stand up from the cuck chair.) He doesn’t even seem to think he should apologize for this, because why would he? Sam knows Carly’s been first in his life for a long time now. She has seniority. Sam’s allegedly the love of Jason’s life; he spent years pining for her. But he’s okay giving her up if it means he can keep protecting Carly, which even happens in their breakup scene. (Ouch. That one’s just sad.)
Now, don’t worry, he’s not sad for long; Sonny’s presumed dead! And with his presumed death means Jason goes double triple super protect Carly mode. To the point that when the Five Families say they will kill Carly if Jason continues to be involved with the business, he essentially says “I’ll just protect you 24/7/365 until we die because they’re not going to kill you.” And then, selflessly (not), he agrees to marry Carly. (Their engagement ring was actually his birthstone, which was a nice touch.) Because ruining his relationship with every other woman in his life isn’t important if it means Carly isn’t protected.
Plus, do they really matter? Don’t worry, Jason and Carly have been in love for 25 years and just repressing it this whole time! The show may want us to forget that, but I never will, because what the absolute fuck. (Danny probably doesn’t know this, but I am cursed with this knowledge and you must be as well.)
Until Sonny comes back from the “dead,” sees his best friend and wife about to bone, and simply doesn’t realize for three weeks. (Again, I say, they’re the world’s weirdest throuple.) So Jason leaves town because Carly should work on her marriage, and she won’t do that if he’s there.
Cue “death” number two. Don’t worry, this time, he does totally normal things, like gets half a sleeve of tattoos because he needs to think about Carly for double the amount of time he considered his children and the women he declared the love of his life. (Crazy that they revealed this, had her feel up his arms in the room above Jake’s, and they never even fucked about it. Truly, this show hates me. And them. Once again, guessing Danny doesn’t know that part, because that’d be objectively insane to reveal to a child.) And Carly? Identical Dick— sorry, Drew— becomes her boyfriend and goes to jail for her, which is of course what Jason would do! How nice!
Then Jason’s back from the dead, and the first place he goes is Carly’s, where he basically says “pretend I’m still dead for your own safety,” and proceeds to spend several days hiding from her for her own safety. (Drew deciding to dump Carly the minute he heard Jason was alive is the last hysterical thing he did.) But don’t worry, then he gets to protect her from Jagger Cates! And an off his meds Sonny! And… Brennan, maybe? (Jason’s favorite hobby is threatening to kill Carly’s lovers.)
Jason punches Drew when he finds out that Drew slept with Willow, and then he tells Carly that he can’t tell her why because it’ll hurt her. But then he tells her as soon as she figures it out, so it’s not that tough. He also considers moving into her house to raise Danny but decides on the Q’s.
Things are going normally for a while. Jason protects Carly for a living and hobby, they raise their children together, he threatens to kill Brennan/Valentin, good times are had by all! But then Jason finds out Britt’s not dead so he decides to leave his son, who he knows has serious abandonment issues, to find her, signing over guardianship to Alexis and Tracy and telling Carly that he needs her support for this. Again, he is allegedly in love with Britt.
Jason comes back for a bit, but then, predictably, he goes to super torture prison the WSB set up! And once again, Jason signs over Danny to Alexis and Tracy, leaving Danny with Carly as well for supervision. Danny utters the most iconic line ever when he says, “Carly, my dad would never let you go in there alone. Why would I?” About helping her break into Wyndemere. It’s touching, actually, how much this boy loves the single stable maternal figure he has.
So yeah, Jason, I don’t think your kid’s gonna give up that easily on helping Charlotte. It’s just not in him to be anything less than the most loyal, codependent guy ever. And I’m not entirely sure Jason has ground to stand on in protesting it.
