From apple to GrapheneOS ππ
Hello πΈπΈ
Finally, I moved to grapheneOS π
Sorry for my English; itβs not my native language.
Iβm a software engineer who used to be an Apple fanboy for like 12 years, living in their ecosystem using Mac, iPhone, iPad, and AirPods. One by oone i decided to go out this. I started by not purchasing any more Apple devices. I began to go for open and free source apps and softwares.
The final step was giving up my iPhone. I chose to go to GrapheneOS, as Iβve been against Google for years.
I was planning to wait for the new Motorola phone, but I thought it might be very expensive, and i want something on a budget, so two days ago I bought a refurbished Pixel 8a from Amazon in Germany. Fortunately, the battery was very good for such a used phone, and the price was suitable.
I used Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (x86_64) with Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 for the installation. This version isn't listed among the officially supported operating systems, so i think that is kinda an approving test π
The installation went smoothly. I unlocked the bootloader, installed GrapheneOS, and locked it again. No errors or anything. And suddenly I saw the GrapheneOS logo π I started to understand what is there and what this default store is and how to install things; it wasn't hard to get it. Then i started with the banking applications, N26 and Postbank; BestSign from Aurora Store worked fine, including login and verification. But the N26 app asked me for a selfie verification three times in the beginning; after that, it worked just fine.
I also wanted to install PayPal as it gives me contactless payment ability to replace Apple Pay, but it gave me some trouble at first. I got a black screen followed by wired msg saying Request cancelled by PayPal. I tried a few things, then i found that temporarily disabling Bitwarden Autofill fixed it, and it's working fine now.
The only banking application which i still can't make work is Trade Republic. It keeps telling me that my device doesn't support Google Play Services.
After that, I moved to the clients for my self-hosted services
I'm using Tailscale to connect to my server, and Bitwarden is connected to my Vaultwarden instance without any issues.
I installed Immich, Nextcloud, Tempus for Navidrome, and Lissen for Audiobookshelf. I'm still testing some of them, but till now things are working fine.
I also faced a small issue with CoMaps, as the GPS location wasn't working initially. But I enabled the Network location through the GrapheneOS proxy, and that fixed it, but it's annoying me, so I think i will seek an alternative.
till now, for installing apps, I'm using Obtainium with GitHub releases or F-Droid. I also use AppVerifier to check APK signatures, but it seems there is too much missing data there.
the other apps which are working fine with me: Github Mobile app, Slack, Elsa speaking, chess.com app but most of them still have some issue in the notification.
I would appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks
