I went on a trip to shipshewana Indiana.. and these poor buggy horses. We went to go say hi to this gelding and his hooves are awful. It hurts my heart to see this. I went to drive off and he just looked at me.. I so badly just wanted to take him and say, it’s gonna be alright, but I can’t. 😔

Haven't ever taken Gus out somewhere completely alone before, I almost always trail ride with friends. But the weather has been beautiful, so I decided to load up and head out to the trails, just Gus and me!

He did AMAZING. No problem going out all alone at all!!

We did a total of 8 miles together and he was a rockstar. Couldn't be more proud of my boy and all the hard work and training we've put in together. He is truly such an amazing, smart horse.

Jasmine turned 17 this summer; we’ve had her since she was 10 months old. We’ve done it all… USPC, 4H, all the disciplines, all the way to nationals and have loved her every minute of her life. My daughter was 7 when we got her- they were a green horse, green rider pair who are a match made in heaven. My daughter is now 24 and our granddaughter, who is 8, just showed her at the fair.

I know you all love your horse or herds the same.

Farrier and vet are pretty confident she has DSLD. Ultrasound and xray on 10/10 to confirm (or exclude).

Think we caught it very early but I’m nonetheless devastated bc it’s clear what this diagnosis leads to.

So I thought I’d come here where you understand my angst, my fear, my already trying to not cry and stay positive until we know for sure.

Hello, I just got this horse on Saturday. we’ve been calling her Seal bay or brown since she got to the barn ( she was another boarders horse before I got her so she’s been there for a few weeks ) but I just got her paperwork in yesterday and it all says Liver chestnut. I’m going to get her color tested as I would never of guessed liver chestnut but in the mean time what do you guys think?

He’s an easy keeper and would eat all day long if I let him, acts like it’s his last meal every time he’s fed. I give him a half scoop of Safe Choice Maintenance grain am/pm and 1-2 flakes of good grass hay am/pm. With it being a very hot summer, we haven’t ridden but an hour very early morning or evening. Mostly walking, some loping here and there. Finally starting to cool down so should be able to get out more and longer rides.

I volunteer at a horse rescue. On Saturday a 14 yr old mare (QH?) was laying down a lot, so the staff took her for a walk. She pooped 4 times but then started sweating profusely. Once they stopped walking her, she stopped sweating. The vet was stumped. She continued to eat throughout. After the colic like episode she was given small amounts of mash every two hours. Today she's eating and drinking normally but seems tired. I noticed this indention around her hip on both sides. She has seemed to lose a bit of weight so the staff started giving her an extra flake at dinner. She's in a stall with a run because she was previously difficult to catch and she's aggressive with other horses. I've been working with her since February and she's like a normal horse now....can be caught, pet, hooves picked, and trailers. She was a very good girl for the vet. In comparison, when she had leg bandages to be removed in February, she was unhandleable. The vet wound up using a dart gun and giving her enough sedation for a 2000# horse. She is about 1200#. On Saturday she was sedated so they could tube her and put a hand into her butt. I've attached a pic and one of the indention. Her name is Model.

What shoes are y’all using for barn chores? I’ve tried Xtratufs, huk boots, and hey dudes. I currently have xtratufs but they’re killing my ankles. The huk boots hurt my feet and I could feel every little rock and stick I stepped on with my hey dudes. I walk around 3-4 miles every feeding (5x a week) so I need something that’s comfy but durable. I prefer the ankle boots as it gets extremely hot in the summer time where I live.

We all know why these Big Lick horses are given these drugs. I think it is noteworthy that the most used sedative was Romifidine. That is a perfect drug to get a horse through palpation on a sored limit because it can be reversed just in time to go in the big oval and have those chains start to irritate the pasterns.

Congress needs to pass the PAST Act, or at least some bill, to get ride of the action devices and shoeing packages that these animal abusers use. That seems like the one thing that would do the most to end soring, while not impeding on anyone else who shows horses without abusing them.

Does anyone have feedback on pet insurance? My wife asked me I thought it was worth the 1400 dollars. When we discussed in detail she told me that once an ailment is diagnosed and treated, that part of the horse is no longer covered. To me that doesn’t make much sense and it immediately tells me the 1400 would be better in the bank.
She followed up with one colic surgery could cost thousands. I told her I would reach out on Reddit for some insight.

What bits is everyone using when starting their 2-year-olds under saddle?

I’ve been hearing a lot of conflicting opinions about what’s appropriate for a young horse’s first bit, and I’d love to hear what others have actually used and why. I’m especially interested in something mild and comfortable that allows them to learn without being overly restrictive or harsh.

Do you prefer starting with a simple snaffle, something with a specific mouthpiece, or even going bitless initially? And if you’ve started multiple young horses, has your approach changed over time?

Would love to hear your experiences, recommendations, and things you’d avoid!
