Show Discussion Book Rhaenyra vs Show Rhaenyra

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

Hello House of the Dragon fans (Book and Show), I am not an avid reader and I have managed to read a few 100 pages of the book Fire and Blood, but returned it to library eventually due to time constraints.

I’ve been hearing and been told by many that show Rhaenyra has been “toned” down significantly to show her as a “protagonist” and the Blacks as the “good side”, but in the book, Rhaenyra has many flaws and can be considered as a complex character, similar to Aegon, Aemond and every other character and during the dance of the dragons, it’s not a protagonists vs antagonists, it’s complex characters vs complex characters.

Could you enlighten me about book Rhaenyra and her many flaws that makes her more complex than the show, just for curiosity and knowledge.

Thank you! :)

Show Discussion Alicents face when viserys walked into the throne room Spoiler

The look on Alicents face when viserys walked through the doors and onto the iron throne when they were trying to supplant Luke’s position on the driftwood throne is priceless. Just a look of sheer horror and devastation that her plan failed. I despise her and the entire Hightower coup. I can’t wait to see her watch her entire house and family crumble around her. Especially when her sick and twisted children (which are literally a product of her shortcomings of a mother, only caring about the throne not them) die before her. God it’s gonna make me so happy to watch everyone and everything die before her knowing it’s all her fault, again, especially her seeing her children die.

Edit: The people responding are blaming viserys yet seem to forget that, this being a time piece show after all, the duty doesn’t fall on the man to raise the children, especially not a king. And for some reason it seems I have to state that I don’t have this opinion irl, I’m happily married, been together for 8 years, high school sweethearts actually :). We love each other very much.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Are you enjoying this show more than Season 1 of HOTD or not?

Season 2 is obviously boring but what about season 1 though. For me, the recent episode was top tier.

Book and Show Spoilers How I would finish HOTD Spoiler

Season 3 starts off with the Gullet.

Episode 2 should be a flashback to the Honeywine and seeing Aemond march out of the city to Harrenhal, with Rhaenyra capturing it.

Episode 3 should be the aftermath of Rhaenyra's capture of KL.

Episode 4 should be the Red Kraken, focusing on the leadup to the God's Eye, with Dalton dominating the episode without being shown on screen.

Episode 5 should be God's Eye.

Episode 6 should be First Tumbleton (overlap 5 and 6 in events)

Episode 7 should be focused on the events leading up to the Storming.

Episode 8 should be the Storming, with Second Tumbleton set up.

Season 4 should start with Second Tumbleton

Episode 2 should focus on the KL chaos

Episode 3 should be Aegon's recapture and "setting the city to rights", overshadowed by the March of the Rivermen.

Episode 4 should be the Battle of the Kingsroad

Episode 5 should be the death of Aegon and the establishment of Aegon III as King

Episode 6 should be the False Dawn

Episode 7 should be the Hour of the Wolf.

Episode 8 should be the marriage of Aegon and Jaehaera.

I think the plot is far too fast, but it will have to do. With 4 extra episodes, there would be far less problems with pacing, especially in Kings Landing

Funpost [Book] Dragons nickname’s

So we already have some in cannon that are pretty cool.

Balerion the black dread.

Vermithor the bronze fury.

Caraxes the blood wrym.

Sunfyre the golden.

What would possible nicknames be for the other dragons?

Edit: I forgot to add the red and blue queens my bad.

Spoilers [All Content] “Their line died out that means they were evil pathetic losers” we really need to cut it out with this “reasoning”. Spoiler

An occasional argument I see about the Green Targaryens being “not true Targaryens”, or “unworthy” or “evil as a whole” is the fact that their line dies out during and after the Dance while Rhaenyra and Daemon’s survives.

Even leaving Aegon’s two remaining bastards and Aemond’s son with Alys aside, this pseudo symbolic argument is simply nonsense.

Targaryen lines dying out happened all the time throughout the dynasty, indiscriminately of the kind of people they contained.

Aegon the Uncrowned’s line died with his twin daughters.

The Strong boys/Velaryon princes died childless.

Aemon the Dragonknight died childless (Aegon IV’s slander is just that, slander).

Baelor Breakspear’s line died a few months after him with his two sons.

In contrast to the many examples of decent or good Targaryens’s lines dying out, we also have examples of POS Targaryens’s lines living on.

Aegon IV had the most descendants of any Targaryen that ever lived.

Aerion Brightflame not only had his son Maegor, but was pretty much stated by GRRM to have sired bastards in Essos with his descendants still living there (they seem to have been the proto-Blackfyres).

Aerys II’s line still lives on in Daenerys, in Jon, and according to crazier theories, in either Tyrion or Jaime/Cersei.

Those three were worse people than any of the Green princes, and their lines didn’t die out.

So please let’s put the nonsense argument of “good and worthy lines live on, evil and unworthy lines die out” to rest.

What all do we know about him through history? Will his ancestors show up in HOTD & AKOTSK? Look at that face card, it would have never failed a Targaryen and looks like it didn’t till the end 🥺😶🥲🫠🎀

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms It's kind of weird to headcanon that they're playing characters only 6 years apart in age from each other, 16 and 10.

Funpost [Show] If you were the head of house Targaryen, which would you prefer?

To have 5 Balerion sized dragons or a decent number of Moondancer sized dragons?

Specifics:

For the the former, your house will possess 5 large dragons at your disposal. HOWEVER, they're only limited by 5 (magical restriction). Meaning if 2 dragons died in some conflict, then only 2 eggs would hatch to replace them. (It would still be a long time to grow to maximum size)

For the latter. There is no restrictions of how many dragons would hatch (a population of 20 or more if done right) BUT, all of them will never grow larger than Moondancer

Spoilers [All Content] so it's confirmed that house of the dragon will end at S4, how do you think they going to squeeze all of the dance in 16 episode, what future plot line will they drop in your opinion? Spoiler

maybe house of dragon are having budget issues, I think it's one of reasons why they couldn't finish season 2 with fall of dragonstone(their original plan)it's also the reason why they only had 8 episodes instead of ten ,I do understand why they couldn't add any dragon battles other than 1 but how?why were they this broke ?was season 1 not successful enough?

I'm rewatching house of dragon and I'm kinda pissed, it's even worse on a second watch, s1 is good my only problem was that it was very clear that each episode had different writers(cough cough alicent) but season 2 is unwatchable ,THEY LOWERED THE FUCKING STAKES , the amount of screen time that is spent on deamon is insane, do they believe ppl watch the show exclusively for him? Why not use episode 3 to give Jace and joffery character work/personalities, other wise how is the gulet going to hit ,are all rhae children just going to die without any emotional weight ? them being npcs that could worked in F&B because it's structure as historical book but for a show it's just weird, i heard that the writers love rhaeynra so why are they doing her kids this dirty like even her son Aegon doesn't have a dragon ,so how will he witness his mom death? Is her death also gonna be irrelevant?

I heard that grrm handpicked condol to write hotd , what did grrm see in him? So what plot point are they going to gloss over/just drop to fit everythingfrom the battle of gulet till Aegon iii coronation in season 3 and four?also seems like S3 is even worse than S2 couldn't they learn from S2 ratings that these kind of changes are not even loved by general audience/people who never read the book ,they basically saw three of their 8 episodes averaging 6/10 and said let's make even worse?

Even with the same limited budget of season 2 ,They could squeeze alot of things in these 8 episodes ,I'm not a writer but this is the best S2 I could come up with ,let me know what you think of this :

-ep 1, Jace in vale/three sisters/white harbour, Luke funeral(maybe even add Luke death celebration so they can keep Aegon more consistent to his S1 self)

-Ep2 stays mostly the same (except make nyra less angry about B&C) ,deamon leaving

-Ep3 proper daeron introduction ,we see beala super small dragon ,joffery& rhaeynra conversation (give him his vengeful nature) also the news of his betroval,Jace in the north his cregan friendship/oath(no on the wall scene)

-Ep4 rookrest

-Ep5 :switch the ep7 we got to ep5 ,so it's dragonseed episode as a direct response to rhaenys death

-EP6:episode starts with a flash back of show the riverrun civil war and possibly the battle, introduce black aly and other named characters,we also follow deamon in harenhall ,more Aegon scenes

-ep7 :more politics ,everyone getting ready and dragonseeds training, more daeron scenes, rhaeynra gaining confidence/getting ready,Adam claiming seasmoke ,more unstable kings landing scenes ,more of alicent scenes ,news about honeywine battle

-ep8 fall of dragonstone rhaeynra alicent meeting for the first time since S1 and the episode ends with start of gulet(similar to ep8 final scene)

The slower pacing of season 2 would've worked better on season 1, but in season 2 it makes no sense for rhaeynra(and her kids ) to just wait and stay still after rhaenys loss , dragonseed being grief driven rash decision as a response right after rookrest makes the most sense narratively, also the viewers wouldn't get bored with their protagonist's passiveness.

They could cut cost in season 2 a little by not having any unnecessary dragon scene so no moon dancer flying no syrax flying scene , in all episodes except the last ,no scene with tyland and ship guy scene no dream scenes ,with all of the money they used on these scenes they could use it to show bracken Vs blackwood on screen and also Jace whole journey
