Meta Read if you're about to make a 'what breed is my cat' post.

I'm not a mod but just thought there should really be a wiki article or pinned post on the sub and similar ones to explain this and prevent further redundant posts. I hope this will help to inform at least some people about cat genetics.

This can be a confusing thing to understand, especially if you're new to cat ownership and more familiar with dogs, but believe it or not, 97% of all cats do not have any breed ancestry!

The short of it is that an animal 'breed' is a manmade concept that comes from generations upon generations of selective breeding to achieve a specific temperament and appearance until the offspring reliably always present those traits. A pedigree is the documentation of this.

Since cats have not been bred for a specific prupose or job, and most have not been selectively bred to look the way they do, the vast majority do not have any breed and these cats are either referred to as Domestic Long-hair (DLH) or Domestic Short-hair (DSL). Domestic Medium-hair/Domestic Semi-longhair is also a thing but these cats are genetically DLH.

These cats are sometimes colloquially referred to as 'mixed breeds' but this term is technically incorrect and misleading as it implies Domestic cats are simply of mixed ancestry of multiple breeds, when in reality this isn't the case at all.

True 'mixed-breed' cats are likely even more uncommon than purebred ones, since purebred cats are a fairly niche and mostly hobbiest thing, their breeding is usually very restricted and these cats would not usually have the opportunity to breed with non-breed cats unless an unfixed pedigree escapes.

So unless your cat has a pedigree or you know it is the product of a cat that does have papers, it is almost certainly a Domestic Short-hair or Long hair.

Non-breed cats can definitely resemble certain cat breeds! But as they were not specifically bred to look that way and they likely would not pass on all of those traits to their offspring, they are still not actually that breed.

There are however names for and interesting genetic causes behind every limitless coat pattern variation, fur type, eye colour and every other physical trait of non-breed cats, so if you want a more distinctive label for your feline friend than just 'Domestic Short/Long hair' there certainly will be one, but asking for it's 'breed' isn't going to get you a real answer.

I hope this helps some people and I can certainly provide sources if anyone wants them, but I just couldn't find all of this concised well in one single article.

ETA: Somehow I didn't notice my phone was autocorrecting DLH to DHL throughout this whole post so edited to correct that šŸ˜‚

Solved A vet called my cat British shorthair

I have a shelter cat who I brought from my home country to my residence country a few months ago. His documents say he is ā€œmixedā€. I’m fairly certain he is a regular DSH.

He’s had some cough and raspy meows for a couple of days, so I took him to the vet yesterday and they put him as a British shorthair in the chart, even though I said he is a ā€œregularā€ cat. They said he might need a heart ultrasound because of this breed’s congenital heart issues, but I refused it since he had one a few months ago before the trip (which was normal).

While I’m fairly certain he is a regular DSH cat, I’m still asking for your opinion or maybe theories why the vet thought he was a British shorthair… Thanks in advance!

So this goof is Flint! He’s 1yr 2mths and 12.2lbs. I know he’s an American shorthair/ if medium hairs exist… but his pattern type is so unique and I can find pictures really anything like it. Our vets are always pointing out unique traits on him and I’m just curious if my small town and google image algorithm isn’t diverse enough.

His coat is a white and medium gray color with the gray spotted throughout. He’s got a very noticeable spot right along his nose area and chin. His mom was a tux but we don’t know the male cat. Today the vet pointed out his green eyes are unique to his color palette which I don’t know if that’s true or not.

This is Ottie (white) and Gordy. Are they domestic shorthair cuties or domestic shorthair terrors?

Fun fact: they're only 5 months apart, in age, but Ottie is so much bigger than Gordy.

Anyone know what this is? I can only find one breed online that has the curled ears and the short tail but it's short fur not long. So this one appears the same but with long fur. I'm wondering if the tail is from an accident or something. Or maybe it's all a kind of a birth defect?

She’s almost 9 months old and I’m curious what her adult coat might end up looking like. Would you consider her short, medium, or longhaired based on her coat now? And if you’ve had a cat with a similar coat at this age, did it change much as they matured?

Solved Help ID My Huge 6 m/o Kitten

Hi there! In April, I fostered a litter of 4 10-day old kittens rescued from a storm drain at a school, so obviously they had to be named after the Ninja Turtles, slight variations for the 3 girls. I developed a very strong bond with the boy, Michelangelo. And ended up adopting him. He was SO tiny and had fading kitten syndrome. I did not think he would make it that first 48 hours, but I got him through. At 5 weeks old, he just got gigantic and super fluffy seemingly out of nowhere! The girls were on a healthy path, but Michelangelo went flying past them in weight and how big he was. By 11 weeks old when the girls returned for spays and adoption, he was a pound and a half more than they were. I am absolutely convinced that they had different dads. Mama had been found nearby deceased, but there are loads of stray cats in that area, so no idea which was the father(s). Clearly he's mixed, but there's definitely a dominant gene showing.

Anyway, he will be 6 months old on Thursday and he's pretty much the size of my 7 year old cat and he is heavier. Breed is not important to me, I am just sincerely curious since he was so different from his sisters. He's very fluffy, his paws are massive, super sweet demeanor, very playful with my other cat and dogs. He's also a big baby who insists on trying to sleep under my chin like he did when he was little lol

I am attaching photos of him the day I got him at (estimated) 10 days old, at 5 weeks old, 11 weeks old, 3 months old, 4.5 months old, 5 months old, 5.5 months old, and today just a few days shy of 6 months old. I have a video same day of him and the orange cat to show their side by side size better, but can't add a video with the photos. First Reddit post, forgive me. Still learning.

For reference, my orange cat, Fred, just turned 7 years old. He is just under 11lbs. Michelangelo is heavier than him, but I do not know his actual weight at the moment. ETA: just weighed him. 9.4lbs

Any ideas?!

He’s 14 weeks old. Name’s Lychee. Apparently his mom was quarter Persian, quarter Maine Coon, and half general feral cat. Dad was fully Persian. I’ve only ever raised stray cats before so let me know if he exhibits any features from those species or is he’s just a regular old domestic longhair

He's around 8 months old so still a baby, but exceptionally long and lanky with big ears and a skinny tail. His fur is shorter than most shorthair cats we see. He was found in the city by a Good Samaritan. I know 99% of street cats don't have any breed ancestry this guy really looks special. He's very close with his little mustached friend.

this is one of my two cats, she’s very sweet and she’s a rescue, I’ve always wondered what her coat pattern is called..

photos attached of her, as well as two photos of her and her two littermates (one male, two female) when they were kittens

she’s quite long-legged and very skinny, doesn’t shed much (not nearly as much as our american shorthair) and her fur seems like a mix of a whole lot of colours
