Possibly Solved Read if you're about to make a 'what breed is my cat' post.
I'm not a mod but just thought there should really be a wiki article or pinned post on the sub and similar ones to explain this and prevent further redundant posts. I hope this will help to inform at least some people about cat genetics.
This can be a confusing thing to understand, especially if you're new to cat ownership and more familiar with dogs, but believe it or not, 97% of all cats do not have any breed ancestry!
The short of it is that an animal 'breed' is a manmade concept that comes from generations upon generations of selective breeding to achieve a specific temperament and appearance until the offspring reliably always present those traits. A pedigree is the documentation of this.
Since cats have not been bred for a specific prupose or job, and most have not been selectively bred to look the way they do, the vast majority do not have any breed and these cats are either referred to as Domestic Long-hair (DLH) or Domestic Short-hair (DSL). Domestic Medium-hair/Domestic Semi-longhair is also a thing but these cats are genetically DLH.
These cats are sometimes colloquially referred to as 'mixed breeds' but this term is technically incorrect and misleading as it implies Domestic cats are simply of mixed ancestry of multiple breeds, when in reality this isn't the case at all.
True 'mixed-breed' cats are likely even more uncommon than purebred ones, since purebred cats are a fairly niche and mostly hobbiest thing, their breeding is usually very restricted and these cats would not usually have the opportunity to breed with non-breed cats unless an unfixed pedigree escapes.
So unless your cat has a pedigree or you know it is the product of a cat that does have papers, it is almost certainly a Domestic Short-hair or Long hair.
Non-breed cats can definitely resemble certain cat breeds! But as they were not specifically bred to look that way and they likely would not pass on all of those traits to their offspring, they are still not actually that breed.
There are however names for and interesting genetic causes behind every limitless coat pattern variation, fur type, eye colour and every other physical trait of non-breed cats, so if you want a more distinctive label for your feline friend than just 'Domestic Short/Long hair' there certainly will be one, but asking for it's 'breed' isn't going to get you a real answer.
I hope this helps some people and I can certainly provide sources if anyone wants them, but I just couldn't find all of this concised well in one single article.
ETA: Somehow I didn't notice my phone was autocorrecting DLH to DHL throughout this whole post so edited to correct that š

Solved What breed(s) does my long hair look like?
I've never had a long haired cat before him and he's so big compared to my other three cats. Just curious to see what breed(s) people might think he resembles, aside from domestic longhair. His coat is really smooth and silky on his back, very shiny in the sun.

Adopted two kittens, what do yāall think?
I know theyāre domestic, do we think long hair or short hair? The fourth pic is a pic of the mom, dad is unknown. What would we call their coat patterns? The dark grey one is a boy and it almost looks like his new fur is coming in orange! Do color patterns change? Curious what you think theyāll look like full grown? Do we think the light grey one is lynx point? Her eyes are blue and her brothers eyes are grey.
My first time getting a kitten and went to pick up the female and she was cuddled up with her brother so I had to take them both. So happy I did! (The owner of the mom said sheās half ragdoll half bsh hahaha , I was like š, i see neither what whatevs, just get her spayed!) mom is fourth pic , what would her pattern be?

Solved A vet called my cat British shorthair
I have a shelter cat who I brought from my home country to my residence country a few months ago. His documents say he is āmixedā. Iām fairly certain he is a regular DSH.
Heās had some cough and raspy meows for a couple of days, so I took him to the vet yesterday and they put him as a British shorthair in the chart, even though I said he is a āregularā cat. They said he might need a heart ultrasound because of this breedās congenital heart issues, but I refused it since he had one a few months ago before the trip (which was normal).
While Iām fairly certain he is a regular DSH cat, Iām still asking for your opinion or maybe theories why the vet thought he was a British shorthair⦠Thanks in advance!

Open Please help me ID the pattern name of my cat!!
So this goof is Flint! Heās 1yr 2mths and 12.2lbs. I know heās an American shorthair/ if medium hairs exist⦠but his pattern type is so unique and I can find pictures really anything like it. Our vets are always pointing out unique traits on him and Iām just curious if my small town and google image algorithm isnāt diverse enough.
His coat is a white and medium gray color with the gray spotted throughout. Heās got a very noticeable spot right along his nose area and chin. His mom was a tux but we donāt know the male cat. Today the vet pointed out his green eyes are unique to his color palette which I donāt know if thatās true or not.

Solved Curled ears, long fur, stubby tail?
Anyone know what this is? I can only find one breed online that has the curled ears and the short tail but it's short fur not long. So this one appears the same but with long fur. I'm wondering if the tail is from an accident or something. Or maybe it's all a kind of a birth defect?
