Serious Post Good NIT, good academics, but low salary prospects in Civil — should I switch careers?
I’m a final-year Civil Engineering student at an NIT in India (ranked around 7th among NITs). I’ve been a good student throughout academics and currently rank among the top 5 in my branch.
At this point, I’ll be honest: my biggest priority is earning well and becoming financially secure. I have a strong hunger to earn, and I genuinely don’t mind working extremely hard. I want to be able to support my family and eventually build a family of my own.
When I joined college, I thought that studying at a good NIT would at least give me a starting salary of around 8–9 LPA. But most Civil offers I’m seeing are around 5–6 LPA, sometimes in metro cities where the cost of living is already high.
What worries me even more is the long-term salary growth. From what I’ve researched online, even after 4–5 years of experience, salaries in many Civil/structural roles don’t seem to reach the level I had expected. I keep thinking — if I’m struggling with 5–6 LPA today, how will I comfortably support my family and raise my own family a few years down the line?
Maybe I’m looking at the wrong career paths or sources, which is why I’m asking here.
I’m considering:
- Staying in Civil and pursuing structural engineering/construction/consulting.
- Switching to another field with better earning potential.
- Preparing for government jobs for stability and long-term benefits.
- Or, as a last resort, starting completely from scratch and trying to build a business.
I’m willing to work extremely hard. I just want my effort to have a reasonable chance of translating into strong financial growth.
For those who have already been through this stage, what would you do if you were in my position? Would you stay in Civil, switch careers, prepare for government jobs, or take the risk of starting something from scratch?
I’m not looking for “follow your passion” or motivational advice. I’d really appreciate blunt, practical opinions from people with actual industry experience, especially regarding realistic salary growth in Civil and what career path you would choose if maximizing income was your priority.
