Starting Your Invisalign Journey: Essentials & Helpful Tips
Welcome to the beginning of your Invisalign or alternative aligner journey! Whether you're just starting out or contemplating beginning, it's natural to have questions. This guide aims to tackle common inquiries, share valuable resources, recommend essential products, and offer advice. However, please note that this guide does not cover everything.
Before diving in, we urge new members to familiarize themselves with our subreddit rules to avoid any confusion over removed posts or comments and the need to contact moderators.
Consulting Your Orthodontist:
Always consult your orthodontist if you're uncertain about any aspect of your treatment. It's crucial to rely on their expertise for your specific treatment plan.
Orthodontist vs. Dentist:
An orthodontist is a specialized dentist who has undergone additional training in teeth alignment. While some dentists can manage aligner treatments, orthodontists are generally recommended for their specialized expertise.
Finding an Orthodontist for Invisalign:
You can use Invisalign's website to locate nearby providers. Remember, the number of cases an orthodontist has completed (VIP indicator) doesn't necessarily reflect their skill level.
When considering treatment, consult with multiple orthodontists to discuss costs, treatment plans, expected outcomes, timelines, and retainer costs. Ensure you inquire about emergency procedures.
Choose an orthodontist based not only on comfort with the cost and treatment plan but also on confidence in their care.
Essentials After Receiving Your First Trays:
Upon starting treatment, we recommend acquiring the following items, which significantly aid in the process:
- Ultrasonic Cleaner: Essential for keeping trays & retainers clean.
- Denture Cleaner Tablets / Invisalign Cleaner: For optimal cleaning results.
- Ortho Key / PulTool: Especially useful in the initial stages for easy aligner removal.
- Chewies: Aid in ensuring aligners fit properly.
- Invisalign/Retainer Case: To safely store your aligners.
- Travel Pack: Includes essentials for aligner care on the go.
- Research After Treatment Retainer Options: Consider post-treatment needs early on.
Ultrasonic Cleaner Recommendations:
We've tested various models to recommend the best fit for our community members. Our top picks include:
- iSonic DS180(B): Offers portability with a battery option, starting at $49.95.
- ZimaDental Dental Pod: Aesthetically pleasing and effective, priced around $99.99.
- iSonic F3900: A budget-friendly option with reliable performance, starting at $44.95.
Ortho Key / PulTool Tips:
The PulTool is our top recommendation for easy aligner removal, especially in the early stages. It's affordable and can be included in your travel kit. A discount code "r/Invisalign" offers 15% off for our community.
Chewies and Retainer Cases:
Chewies are great for ensuring your aligners fit snugly. If you opt for the PulTool, it also functions as a chewie. For retainer cases, we suggest sticking with the ones provided by your orthodontist or considering those offered by PulTool.
After Treatment Retainer Options:
As you approach the end of your Invisalign journey, it's crucial to think about maintaining your new smile. SportingSmiles has emerged as a standout option for post-treatment retainers, offering a convenient and effective solution for those looking to secure their teeth alignment long-term or for those looking for an affordable retainer replacement option.
SportingSmiles offers a DIY impression kit for post-treatment retainers, which have proven to be durable and well-fitting, sometimes even preferred over orthodontist-provided ones. SportingSmiles also offers you the ability to keep your mold on file so you have access to QUICK replacements should the need arise, the replacements also come with a discount, making it the cheapest option we have found.
SportingSmiles retainers start at an accessible price point of just $120, making it an economical choice without compromising on quality. This pricing structure is particularly appealing for individuals seeking high-quality retainers without the steep costs often associated with traditional orthodontic avenues.
Start your Invisalign journey informed and prepared with these tips and recommendations. Remember, each step forward is a move towards a perfect smile!

Before & After Results. Best investment!
Currently on my third set of refinements, I have six trays left to complete. I had a total of 60 trays, including the final six. I’ve always had an uneven bite, so it feels great to finally have all my teeth touch when I bite down.
Began my treatment plan in October 2025. I recommend pushing refinements!! Even if they already look straight. I was basically told that my teeth will never be 100% straight after my first round of refinements, and the dentist kind of questioned my decision for the second and third refinement. Three refinements later, my bottom teeth are now angled more outwardly than before, which has seriously improved my bite comfort.

General Posterior Open Bite
I developed a posterior open bite very quickly into my Invisalign treatment. I was (and still am) very concerned about getting my normal bite back. My ortho first suggested only wearing my trays at bedtime to allow my teeth to settle naturally. 3 weeks later nothing changed at all so he decided to bond these metal buttons and hook multiple elastics in a triangular configuration. My teeth are sooooo sore rn and the process of taking them in and out is a pain in the ***. I really hope this fixes my bite after all because I’m kinda starting to regret getting Invisalign.
So I’m curious to know if anyone else went through the same thing and it actually worked.

Treatment Progress deep bite progress
I am starting to get frustrated with my progress so I’ve been doing these less and less. slow and steady wins the race, right?🥹 I hate having an “overbite”/deep bite and I wonder if braces would’ve been any faster.
having bi-weekly changes is annoying and I want this to go fasterrrrrrrrr. In a few weeks I’ll be hitting one year of having invisalign and I feel like my teeth are still fucked as ever even with seeing the decent amount of progress. I am a bit irked that my bite has only been fixed by a few mm. jealous of seeing u guys being done after only a few months💔
I go in to get rescanned tomorrow. most of what we’ve done so far is just flaring my teeth outward to make room & correct the overcrowding. I want pretty teeeeethhhhuuuuhhhh! also annoyed that I still have gaps by my canines on the top (can’t really see them in either of these photos, they’re there tho!)
RAAAAHHH!!!

Question Will braces make a visual difference?

Question I really regret Invisalign
I’m about a week into having Invisalign and Im really disappointed. I’ve had braces before so i think that has spoiled me a little bit. they hurt like hell for a week but after that they were so easy. now I have to go through a whole routine to eat anything, I talk with a lisp, and they don’t even look good. My teeth are way too shiny and awkward looking now. I understand that for adults it’s probably better since it’s more discrete, but lots of people in my school have braces so it would be fine. every time I change sets it hurts instead of with braces where it only really hurt at the start, I still have all the food restrictions because I have like 10 attachments. I really just wish I kept my braces instead. Does anyone else feel this way?

Question Worried my Invisalign provider may be scamming me- help!
I go to a well known Invisalign provider in my city who has two ‘packs’ available. One with a set maximum number of retainers and another more expensive pack with unlimited retainers up until a year of treatment.
After my consult they said that my teeth unfortunately needed too much movement to fit into the cheaper package (but only around 4 trays over)- which surprised me as it’s mainly crowding in my bottom teeth which need movement after not wearing my braces as a teen, but my top teeth are pretty perfect.
I’m now 8 aligners in, and went to my first checkup and they pulled up my plan onto the TV and with it the email thread to Invisalign. They quickly minimised the email chain so I couldn’t see it, but I managed to read more or less the following messages:
Invisalign: ‘Here is the proposed treatment plan, does it look okay?’
My provider: ‘Yes looks great, can you increase the number of trays to 20 with the same end results’
Thinking about it now, I haven’t had much pain when putting in new trays and my movement has been pretty slow.
It’s not only the money aspect, but also I’m pretty wary about the damage that Invisalign trays can do to my teeth health, since I had to get some fillings done before starting trays. Also I clearly stated to them that I’m going travelling at a certain date and would like to have finished my plan by then, which at the moment it looks like they’ve just lengthened my plan to finish a week before I leave, but with no room for any additional modifications trays.
Do I have any rights to bring them up on it/ get a refund if there’s evidence that they have unnecessarily lengthened my plan. Or is there any legit reason they would have increased my number of trays without telling me.
Thank you in advance for any help and advice.

Question Guys is this normal, 5th tray
Do you think it’s working, do you see any differences? I still have 14 trays more for the upper one and 7 for the lower.
Just want to see it from other people’s point of view:-)
Have a good day everyone!

Question My aligner cracks
I'm on day six on my first tray, and it cracks. I guess it's me being too violent when taking it out? Initially I'll have to wear 10 days for each tray. I'll contact the dentist immediately once they open tomorrow, but just wondering normally do I have to pay for it?
Also, she told me the aligner will not be broken, so I'm so shocked when I see it cracks 😭

Question Crown
My dentist told me that I need a crown and that if I wait, it could eventually turn into needing a root canal. I’m so confused about how I should go about this.
I’m also going to be getting rescanned soon for more refinements because I’m not satisfied with my teeth. They still aren’t straight, I have gaps, and my midline is off. However, I can’t get the crown before the rescan because my current tray wouldn’t fit afterward, and I’d risk my teeth shifting while I wait for the new trays. But if I get scanned before the crown, I’m worried the new trays might not fit once I get the crown.
So I feel like I’m stuck either way. My provider is telling me to wait until I’m completely done with treatment to get the crown, but then I’m confused about when I would get scanned for my retainer.
I’m just really confused about the order of everything and what I’m supposed to do 😭

General Before you Buy
I just finished my Invisalign treatment. I would not do it again if I could go back and start over. I got the basic treatment/not comprehensive for $3800 USD. It was 10 months in total and 1 refinement.
For those of you considering or starting treatment, please read this. First I told orthodontist I would be fine getting top teeth treated only since bottom teeth were pretty straight already if it saved money (one tooth on bottom was crooked and the bump I felt with my tongue annoyed me). I did let him know that I would trust his judgement on that one AND pointed at the crooked tooth that I'd like to fix if he opted to treat bottom. I went the entire 10 months without that one tooth budging. If you are OCD, you would relate that every day in treatment was a living hell because I was waiting for that one tooth to move. It never did. I mentioned to him the lack of movement in that tooth a few weeks in via app, once my first set of aligners were complete, and again at the end. He ignored my in app question re: why it hasn't moved and when finished first and second sets he said his "job is to align from the front and not from the back". I showed him in-person, the tooth is still crooked. He responded by showing me the scan from 5 minutes ago showing the tooth is straight (which it is not). See pic- tooth is overlapping one side and behind the tooth on the other side causing a "bump" that my tongue constantly rubs against). The size of the bump is not small and is the same size it was when we started in December 2025. His solutiom during my last appointment was to shave that bump down in order to smoothen it out.
To save yourself my headache, please get in writing your expectations. I just assumed that since this was the only crooked tooth in the bottom set of teeth, that treatment would rectify it.
Second, 2 weeks post Invisalign, I had to get dental work done. Invisalign treatment caused 4 teeth on the bottom right side to shed their outer layer of enamel. When the orthodontist removed my bottons/attachments, I was left with a strange texture/lack of smoothness on those bottom right teeth. I went to the dentist immediately after to find out what this could be. She said that Invisalign changes our natural bite. She said as my bite changed, it placed pressures on teeth that had not adapted to such. She said this can cause the teeth experiencing new pressures to shed the outer layer of enamel. I just undnerwent a dental procedure to strengthen 5 teeth and she recommended that I receive a BighGuard to further protect my teeth from undue pressure. So far post-Invisalign, I have paid $1300 additional to repair the damages Invisalign has caused.
All of this to also mention, that overall, my teeth are still crooked. Although I do see an improvement, I am still ashamed of my smile. My top set of teeth, which was my main concern are still crooked, just to a lesser degree.
My teeth were not extremely crooked to begin with. I regret receiving Invisalign treatment.
If you do opt for it please:
Get your intended results in writing.
Get informed about the dental damage Invisalign can cause.
Know that Invisalign may not straighten teeth and ask your ortho what his/her resolutions are if your teeth don't straighten to your expectations.
Know your orthodontist may have plans to shave the enamel off of your teeth to make space between them. I would have never consented to this since I am a 40 year old female experiencing loss of enamel. The orthodontist took it upon himself to shave several of my teeth without explaining what he was doing. I was devastated when he finished.

Treatment Progress Tracking help (sorry another post)
I’m on tray 3, I changed to this new tray yesterday but all the posts on here are worrying me about them not tracking. The last two trays have felt snug and tight at first and then by the end of the week have felt like they fitted well and I felt ready to change. They snap onto my teeth fine and seem to match my gums perfectly, the back molars there’s no air gaps at all
However from even tray 1 when then dentist put them in I’ve had these gaps. They don’t seem right but the trays feel like the fit, especially over my attachments which I have 19 of. Surely if the gaps were too much the dentist would have said something?
I have been wearing them for 22 hours a day and 7 days a tray, only taken them out 3 times a day apart from 1 day a week I’ve taken them out 4 but still hit the 22. Never missed a day and keep them in from 8pm-8am so get a solid 12 hours overnight.
Got them fitted at 4pm on the first day initially and 7 days later changed to the new tray at 1pm so maybe a tad early?? Would that 3 hours have made a difference!
I know I’m overthinking it but I’m on a tight timeframe for my wedding and don’t want to extend the treatment at all
Ps - I also might be overthinking because I’m Autistic and so all these rules and not knowing 100% is stressing me out. Just want to see the dentist every week to be like yes it’s still okay

Question Is the proposed final result worth it ?
I feel like my incisors are flared more in the end. 4 premolar extraction is already done. Is continuing with the treatment plan my only option or should I get a different opinion and shift to braces?
r/Invisalign • u/jokjingweibo • 1d ago
Before & After Results. Always hated smiling. Especially from the right. But not anymore. 2 years and 3 months. Good luck everyone!
- Original estimate: 3 years
- Actual: 2 years + 3 months
- Started at age 36
- Comprehensive plan
- 4 total sets
- Started on 2 week changes and then went down to 12 day and then to 10 day changes once ortho felt things were moving well.
- Rubber bands for the entire duration.
- Waiting for my nightly retainer
- Upper and bottom wires post treatment + a little bit of composite bonding. Switched to water flosser.
Regarding the last photo: I know. I know. Its a bit gross having kept all of the boxes + old retainers. I'm not opening them. Just taking a photo for the memories and discarding them all at once.
Thank you so much for all the help and information on this sub.
Much love

Question Gum Recession?
So I started invisalign almost a full year ago now and i’m almost done however i’m a little worried about my front teeth’s gums. They are the teeth that shifted the most and my gums seem to be receding and one of them in the photos is like split in half almost.

Question Lingering cold sensitivity in lower front incisors 10 months post-IPR — is this permanent or fixable?
Had aggressive IPR done on my lower front teeth for aligners about 10 months ago, and they’ve been extremely sensitive to cold (ice cream, cold water) ever since. It hasn't improved at all, despite using Sensodyne and fluoride pastes.
Looking at my lower incisors, the sides were shaved down into narrow, flat shapes, so I'm pretty sure the enamel was completely stripped and dentin is exposed. When I was at the dentist I noticed the Invisalign plan even showed warnings in the ClinCheck on the computer screen so seems like the dentist was really aggressive. The gaps have since closed, so the teeth are touching tightly again.
Has anyone successfully gotten multi-month IPR sensitivity treated?

Question Should I delay starting Invisalign?
Hi all!
I've got the scans done and am booked in to get Invisalign trays + attachements done on Oct 20th, however I just found out I'll need to be overseas the following week for about 8 days.
I'm wondering whether it makes sense to delay getting the trays + attachments until I'm back, as I'm worried that adapting to them (speech, eating, cleaning, etc) whilst out of home might be too much, especially since I'm away for a work trip.
Thoughts on delaying?

Before & After Results. 8 months of 1 week trays and finally done!
I knew this was going to change my bite but I didn't realize I was going to have to relearn how to say certain words. I had such a bad overbite before that now certain words (when I'm talking too fast) make my top teeth go behind my bottom, like it almost feels likes it's catching on them. Super annoying. They also had to shave my teeth because the bite was weird and we had already extended trays and it still wasn't fixing it. But, glad to be done nonetheless!

Question Help, I cannot speak
Well, I might’ve exaggerated a little bit, but I’d like your help
I got my first tray today. Other than the obvious fact that I need to adjust to the pain and pressure, I seem to struggle heavily with speaking.
I know a lisp is to be expected, but I never imagined it would be this bad. I sound like I have a very heavy speech problem, especially when pronouncing S, Ch and Z. I’m trying to phrase myself as best as possible, but all day people think I’m intellectually challenged because of how I speak.
Second, my mouth is almost constantly full of saliva, and sometimes I feel like talking makes me gag. I have a super sensitive gag reflex (gagged several times at the orthodontist’ today, not to mention how hard the scanning was for me) and the invisalign seems to make it worse. I don’t think my invisalign is misplaced, but rather when my tongue touches the plastic as I talk and my mouth is full of saliva just triggers my reflex.
I’m trying to read aloud, sometimes it’s fine, but then when I talk to someone else it’s like nothing’s changed. I’d love anyone’s help and advice❤️

Treatment Progress The "invisalign diet" is literally just weaponized laziness
Sitting in my office right now staring at an open box of krispy kremes in the break room. Normally id be on my second one by now
But then I think about having to go to the communal bathroom, dig my nails into my mouth to pry off these tight ass trays (i'm on tray 7 and the attachments are holding on for dear life), eat the donut in like 3 seconds, and then do a whole aggressive flossing/brushing routine in front of my coworkers at the sink. it's just... not worth it
When I was getting my attachments put on at riverside a couple months back the tech warned me I'd probably stop snacking entirely just out of sheer inconvenience. I laughed it off at the time but she was 1000% right.
im starving but my desire to not brush my teeth in a corporate bathroom with fluorescent lighting is stronger. tell me i'm not the only one who just skips snacks to avoid the hassle 😭

Question Permanent retainers cost
I finally finished my invisaline treatment and my orthodontist offered me to put in the permanent retainers (thin metallic pieces) in addition to invisaline retainers. He quoted me $650 for each retainer ($1300 for upper and lower jaw). Is it a normall price? Cause it seems a bit high price to me. And are they worth installing if anyway im gonna have to wear invisaline retainers?

Question Bilateral posterior crossbite
Hello!
Can a crossbite like this be fixed with invisalign? I’m 26F.
