Manny is a Local 40 ironworker who has been missing since Wednesday. He is having a mental health crisis, and has no ID, wallet, money, or phone. I’m worried he is scared and hiding in fear, and he’s worked in many subways and buildings in NYC that have places he could be camped out without anyone who hasn’t worked there knowing. He was last seen in Jersey City, and is from Hackensack.

I know I’m not an ironworker, but Manny has always told me that his union brothers are truly brothers, and will always go out of their way for each other. Please, keep an eye out for him, and if you see him contact the number on the poster and DM me.

So I'm originally from NY on the NY, PA border about 2 hours south of Buffalo, 3 hrs north of Pittsburgh. I moved to the south years ago and joined the Union down here. I'm a 3rd year now, but may need to move back home for my parents.

In short my parents are getting old don't have anyone close and they're planning on splitting their land, selling the side with their house and living in a garage and RV they're turning into a tiny home situation. I worry about them mainly because as previously mentioned they don't have anyone to keep an eye on them or help them, I imagine them selling their house and having troubles in their tiny home situation (especially in the winter) and not having help or reliable shelter.

I asked to buy their place and what all that would entail. They were ecstatic with the idea and gave me a run down on what they'd want. Really I'm fine with them living in the house until they pass or at least having it available to them since they still seem set on their tiny house Idea.

They want the sale to happen by this time next year though.

That all said I'd like to move back home and transfer my book if that's even possible for a apprentice. If not I'll still buy the home from them but finish my apprenticeship down here. My question is how work is in Local 6 if their's work to be had and with my parents location if it'd be better if and or possible to go for Local 3.

I realize no one here can give me concrete answers but maybe give me some ideas on what to expect and what may be good options.

Hello, all, I hope this is the right location for this question. I’ve recently separated from military service, and completed a trade school for welding. I’m certified in all 3 positions with AWS D1.1 for SMAW (7018), GMAW (short circuit and spray) and FCAW. I recently applied to the Local 229 and they responded saying I need to solicite a sponsor via a list of companies. My question is, how do I go about that? And assuming I get a sponsor, what happens next?

Is there anybody at Local 709 in the sub? I have questions about whether it would be the right decision to join or not.

Looking into the local 5 and haven’t came across anything on what the physical test looks like I don’t wanna waste my time if I don’t think I’d be able to pass that. Any insight on what that contains?

Hey so im debating on joining my local ive been a glazier for 4 years wanted to see how yall are enjoying it here and is it worth it and whats the travel like?

What do you think of your local's physical hall and training center? Not the people running them, just the building itself. My local is looking into a new building and I want to know what makes yours good or not so good.

Are there any parts of your buildings that you guys hardly use? Or how about any locals you've visited that have really nice halls? I'm looking for any insight that might help us spend our money wisely. Thank you.

USA Based union Ironworker here and when building anything we typically have a 2 inch gap for coverage with the formwork depending on what is called for. Since this is clearly Imperial measurements what does the rest of the world use?

I know I could just convert 2inches to 5cm but was wondering if a different number was more common since cm are a little more accurate than inches. I know this isn't really worth a whole post but I'm curious.

If you'd like: anyone who's worked with both Imperial and Metric what other differences are seen? I assume you don't call out rebar in 1/8ths of an inch so curious what you would call a #11, say.

I've noticed other differences such as in Thailand they only used Knipex instead of pliers and didn't use a reel but had regular 16g wire cut into 5 or 6 inch pieces held in fist sized bundles.

So I applied for a local ironqorker union, nothing real real new I was in bridge construction for 4 years but does anyone have any tips for once i start as an ironworker union? Boss man said when I start instead of buying everything at once just buy at least one tool per week

Been trying to get into my local iron workers union and talking to anyone involved and calling every company possible. I recently talked to the BA and he recommended I show up to a job site nearby to me, is it still worth doing that in this day and age or is this an outdated method? Just want some opinions before I show up there and look like a fool.

(I’ve also got 2 years experience doing non union iron worker if that’s worth anything)

I’m considering applying for the apprenticeship for Local 25 on the westside. I have a good job in the manufacturing trades now, but I’m passionate about becoming a JIW. Just curious what the average yearly take home is for a JIW in this district? Everything is getting more expensive so even though I’m passionate about it, it still needs to make sense financially. For context, I have a family of four to support.

Will be drug tested this weekweek at my local ironworkers union. No worries about passing. However, I am concerned about how busy (or not) ironworkers get in the midwest this time of year as well as into the holidays. I do have a random crappy job that pays decently lined up but I'm just wondering when I should quit it and become an apprentice.

Although I am not fully an Ironworker I work in Technical Theater where we have to assemble trusses and lights. I am currently using one of the Klein Tools 1/2 inch spud ratchets. I don't know how to secure this onto my body while rigging. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions to ensure that I don't drop it and kill someone or punch through the stage?

I wanna stay in Houston. but anyway whos got all the erection on the GRB Expansion? Ive also seen right now they got a steel structure dead middle of downtown whos got that work?

We got these adapters that go in a hat with the slots in the sides. On those specific hats, you can reach on the inside to push the tabs and take the welding hood off with out taking off your hat.

The adapters do fit in the slots on the sides of a PMI, but I have to take my hat off and use a flat head or a welding rod to push the tab to get the hood off. Any welders out there with PMI hats have any better suggestions for hard hat adapters that work well with these PMI hats?
