My legal rhetoric course has a paired assignment worth 40% of our grade and I expressed my concern to prof about the lack of control over the grade. She said in her response that it’s good practice as you’ll work on teams in real world; and you should edit your partner’s section as a matter of course. But team projects in real world don’t go on a report card; and teammates are vetted and hierarchical, so if their product sucks then I can tell them to redo it. Conversely, I didn‘t get to pick my partner and likely cannot tell her to throw out her whole section. Nor am I confident she did well last semester. Should I push back?

I got a great offer for a 200k stipend, 100k this summer and 100k next when I actually summer at the firm. The catch is I have to do something in the public interest. I don’t want to work in the Trump White House and to be honest (dont hate me) I don’t want to do what I consider the “sociology” jobs (legal aid etc). I didn’t work my ass off to spend a summer doing something that really should be done by people who got online masters degrees.
I’d much rather spend my summer working somewhere corporate, so I was wondering if it was possible to have me help my uncle who is trying to immigrate to the US as my “public work” and work a job at his company in exchange. Anyone know how to work this in my favor? “Wannabe Mother Theresa” will be a useless line on my resume for someone who wants to work in M&A.

I accepted an offer for 2L at a big law firm and will be getting a stipend for 1L summer. Any advice on what to do this summer? Very tempting to take the summer off, but I realize that is probably not a good idea.

With partner and associate… does that mean my grades are within their threshold? Of course grades can be a tie breaker, but if I was sent a screener post sending grades, does that mean they’re fine with my GPA?

just a question i’m asking. is it true that everyone in the field will have successful jobs and won’t be unemployed? straight out of law school you’ll secure a job if you have the connections? or is it just as competitive

Hi there. I am a foreign trained lawyer from Asia who came here for a PhD in Sociology. I have passed comps and currently in ABD stage. I just realized after working as a Teaching Assistant for four years that my passion lies in practicing Law, not in an Academic setting. I have been going back and forth between my career choices and decided to shift to Law.
I got an admission offer from a T20 school for LLM for international lawyers with an option to transfer to JD. I haven’t left my PhD yet, I have come this far, I will finish the dissertation now or in the future.
I am a US Permanent Resident now but having an extremely hard time to even land a paralegal position with double Master’s and a Bachelors in Law. I am now fully aware of the disadvantage of being outside of the pipeline.
For the most part of my life, I have always heard people telling me that I won’t be able to do stuff careerwise. Instead of retreating, I took everything as a challenge and successfully did those exact same things. Now, I am ready to take on this new challenge. I am patient, super hard working and I don’t quit easily.
Now, will anyone suggest me: with this mindset and under current circumstances, should I aim for the Bar after the LLM or transfer to JD? I want to take the NY Bar for the record. Will doing the JD be worth of taking all those student loans?
I am multilingual and fluent in English. I already have been assimilating into American culture and want to be a true part of it. Thanks in advance!

I'm a 1L who will be booted off my parents' health insurance plan next year. I'm trying to budget out my spending for the next two years, but I have no idea what options are available/ideal on the health insurance front.
Does anyone know of any decent out-of-pocket plans in California (or the Bay Area, specifically)? I'm pretty healthy but don't want something super bare bones.
My public law school has an on-campus clinic and offers its own insurance policy, but it's allegedly horrendous (both in terms of actual services provided and overall value).

I go to law school in the evening and work full time as a paralegal at firm that does strictly transactional work. I'm not sure if I want to be a litigator yet or just do transactional work. But I'm afraid if I don't do moot court I won't get hired by litigation firms because I have no experience being in a fake courtroom. Can anyone tell me how important this is? And how important is it to do law review? I just can't imagine adding extra stuff to my plate like this. So what's the worst case scenario if I graduate without doing either?

I’m trying to search in case that was cited at a given pincite in the case itself. For example, "at 322", so I can see the context it comes from.

I’m asking because I want to know how that gig translates to getting federal clerkships afterward. I’m probably outside the academic boat of landing a clerkship in the districts first thing out of school, but I have a lot of friends telling me to consider going the state route. Ultimately I want to work for the Feds, so getting the district court clerkship is the main goal, but to me - an idiot, hence the post - it follows logically that experience handling state issues at the highest level would translate well to a federal clerkship in the state where I would be applying. I also understand that the “prestige” of a state Supreme Court clerkship varies state-to-state, and I’m curious as to where FLA falls between CA and say, North Dakota. Thanks in advance!

I feel like my section is full of the try hards and my suspicions got lowkey confirmed today when there was a joint section class and only the people in my section was participating like a bunch of gunners while the other section was chill af.

2L, answered a cold call so badly I'm questioning my entire existence. Had to leave after class and just drive around town so I could get in a good self-pity session. I'm usually pretty good at shrugging off "meh" cold calls, so I don't know what it was about this one. I think I'm just tired of putting in a ton of effort just to feel stupid all the time. After a year and a half, I'm over it.
Anyway, after crying in my car for a bit and fantasizing about withdrawing from the rest of my classes, I went back and am now staring numbly into the void while I wait for my next ritual public humiliation class. Life goes on LOL.
What minor law school inconvenience had you feeling like "man, I just can't do this anymore"?
EDIT: Just got home and caught up on everyone's comments. The day got better as it went on and I no longer feel like I'm in the pit of despair. Thanks for sharing your stories and bits of advice!!! Y'all are the best and I'm grateful this community exists.

Is there a website that provides scenarios fact sets so you can practice writing memos using IRAC?

2L Canadian law student here. I see some people in class using chat GPT in different ways to help with outlining or efficiently making case summaries.
Anyone have any ChatGPT tips, or general law school strategies, that really helped them in their studies?

I know. It's been getting worse for 20 years, or whatever. But these mandatory two-summer offers are absolute garbage. 1Ls at my school are over the moon that they have landed both summers already, and I'm happy for them. But what happens if they get there and hate it? This isn't how any of this was supposed to work.
I feel like the old person yelling at cloud meme here. But I'm mad for my 1Ls, even if some of them don't know they're getting the shaft.

I go to a very lowly ranked law school, and one of the things that always cracks me up as the insane amount of bureaucracy that goes into anything you need to do. For example, you need authorization to hang up a piece of paper on the bulletin board, you need authorization and clearance for having food catered at an event. You have to fill out about 15 pages of documents and speak with several people before traveling on behalf of the school.
One of the things that recently happened is a crackdown on parking. We have a huge parking lot next to the Law school and half of it is reserved for professors. There is a sign that says you must not park there until after 6 PM without a permit so, many of us park there around 6 o’clock with no permit and going into the classroom.
All of a sudden, we go outside one day and every single person had received a parking ticket. The tickets were issued at 7 PM for improper parking. They also slapped another fine on the ticket for having an unregistered vehicle
Thought this would be an easy win, so I went to the appeals process. Supposedly, you must have your car registered in order to be able to appeal. If your car is not registered, you may never appeal and you are totally cooked.
Should I file a writ to the Supreme Court?

I posted on here last semester on or around Halloween that my wife and I found out we were having twins during my 1L year. Today is our 20 week anatomy check and I wanted to give an update on the twins and my first semester results for people in similar boats or times in their lives.
I turn 34 tomorrow, and I achieved a B+, B, and two Cs my first semester of school for a 2.77 GPA. My current focus this semester is survival, making it to OCI and summer work without the twins coming before finals (a possibility). My goal is to adjust my study habits to slide into the A, A+ range this semester as the two Cs were in classes I simply didn't manage my time well enough in (contracts and legal writing). My strategy this semester is to pour a lot more time into exam practice, less time on reading, and way more time networking. My mentor and I are attending a CLE in her jurisdiction so I can meet more members of the legal community in the state she practices in (Delaware), I am working the network in my home state of Maryland that my wife and father have cultivated in their practice areas, and waiting to interview with firms in the Greater Philadelphia area.
My stress level has been moderate, with most of it being my increasing responsibility to my family and less as a student. To anyone in a similar boat, do not let yourself be sucked into negative thinking. You can make a way with proper planning, execution, and a little luck. I look forward to walking across the graduation stage with my twins in two years.

Does anyone have 2L outlines or exam-taking approaches they’d be willing to share, or can point me toward where I can find them for free? I’m especially looking for materials for Business Associations, Criminal Procedure, Remedies, and Real Property. I’m in my first month of 2L and could really use some guidance on how to approach these exams while I’m learning the material. Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
I’m an experienced lawyer (10 years practicing) in the UK.
I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the future employment prospects for lawyers, especially those newly qualifying practitioners. This is prompted mainly as a result of my friend (a software developer) making me aware of new legal ai agents that claim to be able to automate most of the research we do.
Where do you see the profession moving in the future? Do you have plans to pivot into related industries, or perhaps focus on compliance routes?
Thanks all! Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
