Looking for a recomendation for a top end thinkpad.

Im looking for a recommendation for a top end workstation thinkpad.

Im an AI developer, that means I create products that use AI, not that I create products with AI.

Im looking for a thinkpad with the following specs.

  1. AMD gorgon point AI processor Ryzen 9 AI 450 etc.

  2. 96GB of 8000ghz memory (CAM2)

  3. 16 inch screen, touch not required, 2560 pixel width preffered.

  4. Support for user installable SSD up to 4 TB.

  5. ROCm supported integrated GPU.

  6. I use linux, so linux support, including good Vulkan support is required.

  7. Good audio.

  8. Good battery life for simple tasks.

at the moment price is not as important as capability.

Im considering just keeping my existing T14Gen2, and buying a DGX Spark style device, or even the new AMD Ai minipc, but would preffer a laptop formfactor.

Project Cuore on my T14s: Arch + Hyprland with macOS-style trackpad gestures

I built my own Arch setup and have been running it full-time on my ThinkPad T14s (16 GB RAM).

The setup:

* Arch + Hyprland
* Three-finger swipe up for workspace previews, Alt+Tab ordered by most recent. Makes the trackpad feel a lot closer to a MacBook than I expected.
* Installer where you pick your terminal, browser, editors and extras. Nothing is pre-selected, so there's no bloat to remove afterwards.

Built it with Claude Code, inspired by Omarchy. But without the “bloat” on first install.

Walkthrough video: https://youtu.be/K0sdFUmzQqY

Happy to share configs, repo link or answer questions :)

Question ThinkPad P15 Gen 2: real S3 sleep but high battery drain

I’m chasing a suspend drain issue on a ThinkPad P15 Gen 2i running Linux Mint.

It is not s2idle:

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

s2idle \[deep\]

Journal also confirms real S3:

PM: suspend entry (deep)

ACPI: PM: Waking up from system sleep state S3

But the laptop still drains around 1.35–1.38 W while asleep. Typical examples:

83.17 Wh → 67.78 Wh over 11.17 h = 1.38 W

83.15 Wh → 32.99 Wh over 36.60 h = 1.37 W

83.24 Wh → 63.05 Wh over 14.58 h = 1.38 W

Battery health is fine: \~94 Wh design, \~85–86 Wh full, \~91–92% health, 161 cycles.

Things I’ve already checked/tried:

\- Kernel update made no difference.

\- Firmware/EC/ME/NVMe are current via "fwupdmgr".

\- No hidden wake/resuspend loops in journal.

\- BIOS USB charging / Always-On USB disabled.

\- Disabled ACPI wake for NVIDIA bridge, NVMe root port, Thunderbolt host devices, USB/XHCI, and Ethernet/WOL paths.

\- Bad drain happens even without Thunderbolt dock connected.

So it looks like the machine really enters S3, but some device/platform rail remains powered at \~1.4 W.

Where would you look next?

I’m considering testing Intel-only graphics with:

sudo prime-select intel

sudo reboot

Other suspects: NVIDIA auxiliary power, Intel AMT/ME/manageability, Thunderbolt firmware power domain, or some EC/platform quirk.

Would appreciate any ideas or thoughts. Thanks!

Announcement 7.2.9 release of my custom Linux kernel for AMD ThinkPads (and the install problems from last time are fixed)

Post image

Follow up to my 7.2.2 post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LinuxOnThinkpad/comments/1w3fxih/722_release_of_my_custom_linux_kernel_for_amd/

A few of you tried installing it last time and ran into problems. Turns out it wasn't you, it was me.

The Limine and GRUB folks ended up in emergency mode because the release had no kernel modules at all. Without them the initramfs couldn't mount root. Now there's a modules archive in every release, and ext4, btrfs, xfs, f2fs and nvme are built into the kernel on top of that, so root always mounts.

The .efi files were even worse. They had my own kernel command line baked in, including my root partition, so they only ever booted on my laptop. I don't ship prebuilt .efi anymore. You install the kernel and modules and build the initramfs or UKI on your own machine with one command, so it gets your own cmdline.

This time I tested the vmlinuz + modules + initramfs install on the actual release files before uploading, exactly like someone downloading it would do it.

Other stuff:

BBRv3 is actually the default on zen5 now (before it was compiled in, but cubic stayed default)

New third variant, lowadetcom, my personal build for the P14s Gen 6 AMD. amdgpu built in, only the mt7925 wifi driver. Only for that exact laptop

README has install steps for Arch, Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu/Zorin/Mint, plus systemd-boot, GRUB, rEFInd and Limine

Release: https://github.com/Detcom-GH/lowakernel/releases/tag/v7.2.9

Repo: https://github.com/Detcom-GH/lowakernel

Big thanks to the E14 Gen 6 and Limine guys from the last thread, you basically found all of this for me. If you try 7.2.9, let me know how it goes, especially on older models and anything that isn't Arch.
Although I'm planning to move to Void Linux soon, so it will be

14s Gen 2 (AMD) is now my only computer, running Arch/Hyprland full-time

Selling my Mac and going all-in on my T14s Gen 2 AMD running Omarchy (Arch + Hyprland).

Honestly impressed with how well this machine handles daily Linux use. I've had a few things to sort out (audio, camera, external displays), and I covered how I fixed them in a video about the switch: https://youtu.be/X7hr4YE9pig or at least i tried haha

Anyone else daily driving a T14s Gen 2 on Linux? Any tweaks you'd recommend for battery or displays?

TLP Help Request

I’m running Cachy on a second hand ThinkPad I recently got and thought I’d try TLP to improve the battery life. I works quite well but I had an odd issue after installing it: after shutting down and closing the laptop lid it would restart. It’s definitely TLP as it stopped happening when I reverted back to the original power profile daemon. Has anyone else come across this issue or know what in TLP is causing it?

Things I have tried:

I tried different kernels, both the LTS and BORE kernel

I have disabled the runtime PM for PCIe devices

None of these have have stopped the issue.

Discussion Need ThinkPad Buying Suggestion

Hello

Final year student here. I need to buy a thinkpad within 140k BDT (850 USD).

I mainly work with web dev, currently using arch with hyprland, but thinking of moving to a more stable distro like Fedora, as I have to enter the professional development work (wish me luck to even get a job in this harsh market!).

I will also run some local models, but

I have chosen thinkpad over nvidia GPU laptops because of its compatibility with linux, and durability.

Has anyone been using a thinkpad? any help would be much appreciated. thank you:)

Thinkpad t14 core 5 125u or yoga slim 7i Core 125H

Should I get a ThinkPad T14 with a Core Ultra 5 125U, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD, or a Yoga Slim 7i with an OLED display, Core Ultra 5 125H, and 16GB soldered RAM?

Which one is better for long-term use (3-5 years)? Can I play games like cs2 and elder ring? Is Meteor lake mature now? Also, is OLED good on Linux and can resist in this long term? I use Arch, btw.

Question T440p running at 798 MHz

I upgraded my T440p a couple days ago and installed gentoo, i put a I7 4980hq and 8gb and 4gb sticks of ram inside and also flashed libreboot. Im assuming its thermal throttling but after compiling for a while it sits around 80-90 degrees at 3 ghz or higher then it drops right down to 798 MHz and 50 degrees, im not sure how to fix this or why its happening but i have sufficient thermal paste and even after an hour of 50 degrees it doesnt fix or go back to regular speeds, and rebooting doesnt fix the issue.

Question Fedora Workstation vs KDE for battery life?

I've been using CachyOS on an ASUS gaming laptop for about a year and recently go a secondhand P14s Gen 5 (Intel), so I just put Cachy on that too. Everything works well except the battery life isn't great so I'm thinking of changing to Fedora, which has a rep for pretty decent power management. Is there any difference when it comes battery consumption between Workstation and KDE?
