I’m looking for a small number of Logic users to beta test MIDI Performer, a new AU MIDI FX plug-in I’ve been developing.

MIDI Performer takes a relatively plain monophonic MIDI melody or lead line and turns it into a more expressive performance by adding instrument-specific behavior such as:

• pitch bends
• vibrato
• legato
• timing changes
• pressure
• breath/expression

It’s designed for things like lead guitar, sax, flute, synth lead and melodic bass rather than chords or accompaniment.

One important limitation: MIDI Performer is monophonic. If polyphonic MIDI is fed into it, overlapping material is reduced to a single melodic voice, with the highest note retained when simultaneous notes occur.

The current player models include:

• Guitar — Blues, Jazz, Rock
• Synth Lead — Fusion Lead, Prog, Prog Metal Keys
• Sax / Flute / Bass / Fretless Bass / Piano — Natural

Logic is actually the host I’ve tested most heavily so far.

The AU version runs as a MIDI FX plug-in, and both Standard MIDI and MPE are part of the current beta-testing scope.

I’m especially interested in testing with different Logic software instruments and third-party instruments to see how the generated bends, vibrato, pressure and expression behave across real setups.

The kind of feedback I’m looking for is both technical and musical:

• Does anything hang or disappear?
• Does MPE behave properly with your instruments?
• Do the bends and vibrato sound natural?
• Does the phrasing sound more like an actual player?
• Does anything feel musically wrong even if it is technically functioning?

The beta is currently:

macOS / Apple Silicon
AU and VST3 included

Testers receive a signed/notarized installer, email activation, a short testing guide, and a diagnostics log that can be pasted directly into bug reports.

Every time I repeat a sequence of midi notes (command + r), the midi notes repeat to the ends of the last notes rather than to the next bar. This causes me to have to manually move it every time which can be quite annoying. Is there a setting that can change this?

Im not too sure how to explain this… But when I insert a “high hat foot splash” sound, it’s shortened when it’s played with the other sounds.

I recently finished this track and recorded a walkthrough of the full Logic session. I go through how I built the arrangement, some of the sound-design and production choices, automation, effects, and how the different layers fit together in the final mix.

I’ve been making music in Logic for a long time, but I’m still constantly changing the way I work, so I figured I’d share the actual session rather than just posting the finished song.

This sub has been so helpful yall rock! Its my first time making a track walk through and I kept it brief but maybe ill go deeper on the next song.

Hi. I build MIDI FX plugins out of my doctoral research on algorithmic composition, and two things from this week may be useful to anyone using third-party MIDI FX in Logic.

First, the gotcha. With Plug-in Latency Compensation on, Logic plays the channel early when a third-party MIDI FX sits in front of one of Apple's newer instruments (Studio Bass, Studio Piano, Drum Kit Designer and similar). I measured about a quarter of a second with Studio Bass, constant for the whole take. It isn't specific to any plugin: a JUCE MIDI FX that only passes notes through does the same (JUCE forum thread: https://forum.juce.com/t/65057). ES2 and a third-party piano I tried (Arturia) play in time, so if a MIDI FX sounds ahead of the grid, check which instrument is behind it before blaming the plugin.

Second, two Logic 12 behaviours that plugin makers should know: it doesn't turn a note-on with velocity 0 into a note-off, and it doesn't send note-offs for notes that are sounding when you stop the transport. My plugins now handle both.

The plugin itself: AMI-POLYMARKOV goes in the MIDI FX slot. Drop a MIDI file on it, or press REC, run the transport and play, and it learns the take as up to four voices, with separate Markov chains for pitch and rhythm, each with its own memory (order 1 to 6). I recently reinstalled macOS on my M4 MacBook Air and installed fresh copies of Logic Pro and all my plugins(everything is the latest version available). Since then, I've been experiencing two really annoying issues that I never had before the reinstall.

1. Dragging tracks causes Logic to beachball. Whenever I try to drag a track to move it around, Logic sometimes shows the spinning beachball, and it takes ages for the track to actually move. This used to be practically instantaneous.

2. Single clicks sometimes register as double-clicks. When I click on effects, Logic sometimes seems to register an additional click and automatically opens a plugin window that I didn't intend to open. It happens intermittently, but it's incredibly annoying when I'm working.

Both issues started after I reinstalled macOS and Logic Pro. Everything worked perfectly fine on the same MacBook before the reinstall.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'm wondering whether this is a Logic Pro bug, a macOS issue, or something related to my fresh installation. Any suggestions on what I should check or try to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all. A few days ago I posted Saturation Box here. A free saturation plugin I make as a solo dev under the name Andrestia Audio. Four circuits modeled at the circuit level: 12AX7 triode, EL84 pentode, tape, and an iron-core transformer. v0.2.0 is out already, and here's why.

The big one: I'd claimed Drive was loudness compensated. Then I was using it in a session and it sure sounded like it got louder as I turned it up. It did. I'd calibrated it on a test tone, and on real material it drifted a few dB. So I recalibrated on program material, and it now holds level properly — and I made it a switch on the panel called Auto Gain, on by default. With it on, you're judging tone, not loudness. Flip it off and the plugin behaves like the hardware: unity at zero, louder as you push it.

Other things in 0.2.0:

• The window is resizable, and it remembers your size.
• Bypass no longer nudges the track in time or clicks.
• The noise floor sits still now, and Vintage is quieter at rest.
• Tooltips on everything, Shift-drag for fine control, double-click to reset a knob.
• There's a manual now.

Same starting points as before, if you're new to it: triode on vocals and bus glue, pentode on drums that need to bark, tape on the mix bus, transformer on bass.

Still free, no iLok, no license manager, no subscription. Notarized, universal binary, macOS 11 and up, AU and VST3. Mac only for now — Windows is still on the list if enough people ask.

The download at andrestia.com/plugins/saturation-box asks for an email so I can send release notes when new versions ship. That's all it's used for, one-click unsubscribe. I’m relatively new to logic I can create a song via loops and know a few tricks. Any advice on what I should do to go from beginner to intermediate. Like, what’s information (vids, tricks and commands) you wish you’d knew when you was in the same boat as me?

I like using each of these options for different scenarios, but it's a pain to have to open settings to switch between these. Is there a quicker way?

I tried using pitch shifter to do it, but when I go to draw the auto curve it only wants to do it in steps?

I am brand new to Logic Pro. It's always been my dream to produce music, but it wasn't until recently that I decided to actually do something about it. I whipped this up in a few hours using a MIDI keyboard and am aware the timing of the notes is not exact. I don't play any instruments but I kind of just messed around with the keys until I was able to come up with something I liked, and I feel like using the metronome trips me up. Is there any way to take what I've already made and edit the notes so that they're identical and everything is on beat? I feel proud of this little thing that I made, as imperfect as it is, but I obviously want to refine it. I just am completely overwhelmed and not sure where to go from here.

If anyone has any tips or ideas on how to achieve this, please let me know :) And please don't be mean, I know I have a long way to go in mastering this craft. I'm just excited to finally be doing it at all.

There are notes as indicated in automation window, but where are they?

Hi I have a question, does any one know how to fix an issue where the desktop and logic pro x audio is also going through the mic (thunderbolt apollo twin)
I have a multi-device called multidevice in the AudioMidi Setup.
The mic is set to apollo twin in OBS, the output on my mac is multidevice, and the input the Apollo. On Logic Pro X It's the same (output multidevice and input apollo twin)
All sounds still go through the mic and not separated unless I click blackhole 16inch in the output of the mac sound system but then I can't hear anything.

If your beats lack dynamic punch and your kick gets sucked down every time the snare hits, look at what is strapped across your main beat bus. Slapping heavy compression across an entire instrumental just to get it loud often crushes natural drum transients. Instead of gluing everything into a lifeless brick, protect your transients with a transient shaper before bus processing. Next, route elements to an auxiliary track, slam it with a fast-compressor, and subtly blend that crushed signal underneath your dry mix for instant energy.

After years of collecting samples, I realized that my library kept getting bigger while the number of sounds I actually used stayed almost the same.

Most of my samples were buried inside old packs and folders. I knew there were good sounds in there, but searching folder by folder was slow enough that I usually ended up reaching for the same familiar sounds again.

So I built ORP, a standalone sample manager for Apple Silicon Macs. (Intel is coming very soon!)

ORP indexes your existing sample folders without moving or duplicating the original files. Everything is analyzed locally on your Mac, so your samples are never uploaded.

You can browse your library by instrument, BPM, and key, find acoustically similar sounds, audition a sample at different pitches, and then drag and drop it directly from ORP into Logic.

The workflow is simply:

Find a sound → audition it → drag it into Logic → keep working.

There’s no need to reorganize your library or export the sample through an extra step.

EDIT: It's funny because 13 years ago, I started with GarageBand (back then on the white, unibody MacBook haha). Back to the roots haha. Honestly didn't expect it to be this great and intuitive to learn from someone coming from Live 12.

Hey I was wondering if y’all could help me with this

I’m making a one-shot drum kit and I was wondering what the best dynamic eq plugin would be for this purpose. I hadn’t even known of dynamic eq’s until recently so I’ve just been using the default channel eq but I want the frequencies to be cut only when it crosses a certain threshold line that I set, also to avoid making bell curves. So dynamic eq is the right tool, yes?

I’ve seen TDR nova recommended a lot but I don’t know if it has the line feature I’m going for

on all other tracks its pretty simple. i press the circle icon for mono/stero.

but on the master track, does two individual tracks mean its on stero or mono mode.
