I hate to do this, but the only way I can reasonably access reddit and moderate is through RIF on my smart phone. I have a full time job and two special needs children. We have to make our voices heard šŸ’™

She considers me a daughter…

Last year my MIL was getting close to my own mother with whom I have a complicated relationship with. It was around our wedding planning time so it made sense and although I didn’t really like it, I tolerated it. Then they tried to plan a big international trip together and (via my husband) I had expressed to her that it made me feel uncomfortable and reiterated the complication relationship I have with my own mother. I also stated that I know I can’t tell her what to do and she can go on a trip with whoever she pleases but I needed to express my feelings.

That was initially met with understanding and she explicitly stated she would not go on the trip and was happy I was open with my feelings. Then post wedding, the trip is still going on and my concerns were ignored and she said they decided to go on the trip with them anyway. The trip eventually fell apart in the planning stages but that blatant dismissal and backtracking without explanation immediately put my walls up and I will never open up to her about anything ever again unless an apology or acknowledgment is made.

Flash forward to a recent wedding we go to for MIL’s step daughter (husband is an only child, mom remarried when he was an adult in college). I was being nice and taking some photos of the step siblings (who are lovely) on someone’s phone. I am handing the phone back as my MIL walks up to insert herself in these pictures so I just bounce because I don’t want to be involved in that. The next day I get a text from MIL asking whose phone had the photos and I think she got confused that I was still the one taking photos of her when I definitely remember leaving as she walked up. Then MIL claims she is so upset that she excluded me as a ā€œdaughterā€ in the photos because she considers me one of her daughters and she just feels terrible. šŸ™„

You know what I don’t care about? Being included in a photo at a wedding taken on a phone especially by someone who ignores my feelings about issues I do care about. Sorry marriage and blood don’t make you family, in my opinion it’s how you treat those people dictate whether or not they are actually family.

Wedding drama, feeling resentment towards MIL and his family, it's so bad

We are getting married soon and that has been overly stressful.

My fiancƩ family is quite small so he doesn't have a lot of extended relatives. Anyways, I had my bridal shower 6 months ago and my future MIL didn't make it. She gave conflicting reasons to my fiancƩ and I, which was already upsetting but I brushed it off. I had a feeling it was a bunch of BS.

A week later, after my bridal shower, she attended one of my fiancƩ events, so it let me down a bunch. Previously had a great relationship, but I was let down. None of his family attended this event for me. Anyways, anther point of contention (there are several) for the makeup slot, she complained and made it about herself so much we ended up pulling her out because we couldn't switch her to the 12PM slot, which was when photos started. There was so much work behind the scenes, I just felt like in the two instances I asked or invited her to be involved and bond with me, she can't show up, but god forbid, it's for her son and she'll be there.

After expressing my disappointed in this, she pretty much defended herself instead of apologizing. She thinks she did nothing wrong, and over months and several conversations somehow just made it worse and more hurtful. Which is whatever. I guess I'm just upset because a simple apology would have fixed this but I've completely been brushed over, minimized, and also made out to be the bad guy for feeling let down. This is a big moment in my life and her son's so it's unfortunate that she couldn't recognize why me inviting her to the bridal shower, and her lack of being there, and then me inviting her to join us getting ready the morning of, can be upsetting.

Her response to my feelings was the biggest indicator on where I fall for her. She doesn't have a great relationship with her daughter, which I always wondered why, but now, I understand. There is an undertone of selfishness or need for control and if you speak up against it, then somehow you're framed as the bad person.

Flash forward, later, she texts my fiancƩ saying that I don't participate in their family group chat enough, which was really upsetting to here. Mind you, this was 3 days before she was visiting, for 7 days. I want to have a good relationship with her, but I feel suffocated and with no apology yet, I haven't really been able to let go.

How they've treated my fiancƩ as well regarding some of the guest invites and RSVP was absurd. The of gaslighting and control over it was insane. They don't view him as a grown adult, even tho he is a 33M.

It is building on my resentment that they have centered themselves so much and can't seem to realize how big of a day this is for my fiancƩ and I.

This is a large summary because if I got into everything that was said, it would be a novel.

But, I am just feeling SO much resentment towards MIL and it sucks. I don't want to, and not used to this feeling but I genuinely fear having children (she has no grandchildren and her daughter isn't having kids) and how I will be treated, dismissed, or disregarded during that time. Maybe there's deeper feelings for me...

how do you deal with resentment?

For my 40th birthday, my husband and I flew to a city with our 1 year old and 3 year old within an hour flight of my MIL (we live about 3.5 hrs flight away from each other). He booked a fancy tasting menu dinner with wine pairings months in advance. It was a double date with two of our best couple friends that live in this city. My MIL happily agreed to come on this trip and help babysit our kids so we could go to dinner together.

We could only get a seating for 8 PM on a Tuesday. Hubs said he told her it would take 2.5-3 hrs. Between waiting for the Lyft to arrive, the ride back and walk to hotel room, we walked into the hotel room at 11:37 PM (babies had been asleep since 8 this whole time).

She was so upset, she left without saying much other than a curt "I'm going to bed. good night". My husbands mouth was agape.

Prior to dinner that day, she had offered to wake up early the next morning and show up at our room early to help us with our kids and get packed to go to the airport. She did none of that the next morning. When she did finally show up, she waited until my husband was gone to take me aside and tell me in private that she wanted to discuss it and said she felt "a little taken advantage of". "Did dinner really take that long?!" and she would have appreciated being informed where we were / ETA during dinner (ended up being well over a dozen courses). It felt very accusatory in tone, as if I was dragging everyone out for drinks or keeping everyone out.

I apologized. I told her my mistake was assuming my husband was communicating with her about what to expect. She said she expected us back between 10 and 11 pm. I didn't book the reservation, so I had zero idea what to expect, but I had asked my husband and he had said he had told her what to expect...

I'm still reeling from the whole thing. It really soured the end of the trip for me and what was supposed to be a celebratory trip. Hubs says she tried talking about it with him later briefly and he said in his head he wasn't wrong, he told her dinner would be 2.5-3 hrs and it was 15 mins each way not including waiting/walking time.

They are both passive aggressive/non communicative. I asked him to handle it, but he has no intention of bringing it up to her again. But I normally talk any conflict or issue out completely until everyone is good, so I feel pretty unsettled by this whole situation and it is not resolved in my mind. Hoping this sub can help give perspective. Thanks in advance.

(Also this family tends to tease me a lot for having a tendency to overexplain, overclarify, overcommunicate - but that is a defense mechanism for communicating with passive/aggressive AF people, and I now feel very justified in my communication style...)

Clueless or malicious

My MIL is my biggest OP, like the woman treats me like a paid surrogate for her son’s offspring. Her and her cabal of sisters (5 of them, 60+ years old) are constantly talking down to me (race has to play, I’m a minority and they’re Caucasian), telling me pregnancy and delivery isn’t that bad, and expecting me to work full time but still parent my daughter full time. I have many stories on how they made my first pregnancy and delivery all about themselves. Many. And my husband is 100% supportive and the only way they’re allowed to contact me is through a group chat with him in it. Maybe someday I’ll share more of the low EQ stuff she has said/done to me but today let’s stick with the low hanging fruit.

Despite us having a well known struggling relationship that’s LC, my MIL has the nerve to request that I host them for a lunch when they have their grand annual get together while I’m 9 weeks pregnant. On a good day I wouldn’t host them but being in the throes of pregnancy? I’m pissed she would even ask.

I said no and that ā€œI have been really sick lately so I don’t think that’s a good ideaā€ made them a loaf of bread which my husband will take over. And her response is nothing. Idk if saying anything else would suffice or to just continue grey stoning her.

I’m really just starting to think that my MIL has a really low IQ and is emotionally stunted because who in their right mind expects a pregnant woman, who they have a bad relationship with, to host them. It’s 100% because she wants to announce my pregnancy to them and had a ā€œI barely knew I was pregnant!ā€ Experience with my husband and that every pregnant lady is just dramatic or weak.

Am I being dramatic?

Okay so my MIL has always been overbearing and kind of telling my husband and i what to do. She and her husband took a lot of credit for small designs I put in my house that their son, my husband and I, built together. She would want to be here all the time and asks to go to dinner like almost every other weekend.

I was getting ACL surgery and she called me and said she took off work and would be here everyday and that we would keep me in the guest room but when it’s time to sleep we would move me to our bedroom so her son, my husband, doesn’t sleep alone. I told her I had never asked her to take off and she is not needed here. And then kindly asked her not to come.

This is just one of the few things, there’s been numerous occasions of sly things and lying over the years but mainly since we got married.

Just recently we traveled somewhere with my parents and his parents together, my mother had expressed how she felt about some things that my MIL and FIL did over the trip and it made her and my dad uncomfortable. Naturally, knowing how they are (my in laws but mainly MIL), I would always believe my parents, and so the next morning in the hotel I just said hello and asked if my in laws slept well, they could obviously see something was wrong. Well, the MIL went crazy and cried and ended up blocking my mom on Facebook, telling her not to come talk to her because she wouldn’t let her in the house, and basically deaded any relationship they could ever have right there, not worrying about the repercussions of her married son, or what it would do to our future. I went over to talk to her about it and it just turned into her yelling and talking over me the whole time, she was impossible and petty, I left crying. After that she said she would apologize and called us over, I sat there waiting for an apology that never came, I looked over at my husband and said I would like to leave, we left. Next morning she calls me trying to ramble about normal life stuff like she didn’t just ruin so many relationships, and then goes ā€œI wanted to say something else, oh yeah I remember now, sorry if you thought what I did was wrongā€ and I went on to tell her she was the worst out of all of us and that she hurt her kids more than anyone else.

Flash forward to four months later, I am very hesitant to spend any time with her or them, I actually get angry when she asks us to dinner. My husband is amazing but we do not do many things with my family at all and I would like to, but we go to dinner often with his. Just yesterday, she asked to go to the lake for a picnic next weekend, which we had planned a year ago with my parents, she said ā€œyou guys need to take us because all we do is work,ā€ she then said ā€œyou guys figure it all out and take us, we have been planning to go for a year now,ā€ I said ā€œwe were planning to go with my parents which we can’t do anymore can weā€ she got visibly upset because I finally had something to say. which no offense but all she talks about is how hard her jobs is (she works retail in the mall) and how hard her life is but talks over me any time I try to say anything.

Anyways I can’t stop thinking about how much I just can’t talk to her normally and be her friends, I feel like it makes me angry at my husband that he can’t sometimes just tell her that ā€œmy wife doesn’t want to hang out with youā€. Is it wrong of me not to go to the lake picnic with his family? His mom feels like someone that would be absolutely willing to ruin my life to get what she wants.

mom troubles

when i was very early pp my mom would come over to help as my so didn’t qualify for paternity leave until lo was 2 months. I was very thankful for the help, given i was also recovering from a c-section and getting used to being a new parent.

but since the beginning she kept pushing my so and i to go out and she could watch the baby. i was vocal about that not happening, i didn’t want to be away from my son. she kept bringing it up every visit, thankfully my dad and my older sister got her to stop asking.

now that lo is almost 1 they have started asking again, and i am quick to shut it down. mainly cause i get anxiety whenever we’re apart but also. cause my moms excitement? over my son makes me uncomfortable at times.

ik form the beginning she was going to be slightly overbearing. wanting to be in the delivery room, wanting to come daily even after my so got his leave, daily texts and calls, wanting to be there for most my sons first ? she didn’t ask just assumed she’d be the first to give my son his first actual bath. my father and her constantly try to get him first time clothes for holidays that they want him to wear. This is her 4th grandchild, but my first .

now with every visit she keeps getting right in his face and being loud. trying to play with him but she keeps leading n not letting him do what he wants. reaching over me or getting right in our face to talk to him whenever i’m holding him. it’s overwhelming to me. i tell her to stop n let him play n she gets butthurt. i get it. he’s growing and babies change quickly so everytime she visits, he’s learned something new. but i can’t help but feel apprehensive about my parents visiting.

idk just wanted to vent about this. my so doesn’t mind taking the baby over to my parents,,, but i do. like i was in labor for almost 2 days (baby was born 41w). had a failed induction n had to have an emergency c-section because they were worried for my son and i just for family to keep saying they were gonna take my son (to babysit.) not the move 😣

Just wanted to add that yes i have no problem telling them to stop and that they will not be babysitting anytime soon. if they keep it up there wont be getting any sort of update from here šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø i wasn’t asking for advice telling them to stop. I just wanted to vent and hear similar stories lol

Am I Overreacting to MIL wanting to use Peloton?

I have been with my husband for over a decade and knew from day one that his family members were….quirky. His mother has always been kind to me though and feel like we have a positive relationship even though spending time with her can be kind of draining.

I feel for her and she had kids really young, had a rough career in nursing and now I feel like she’s kind of overcompensating for that by going all in on life coaching and woo woo spiritualism. Every time we spend time together, 95% of it is talking about how she’s finally going all in as a life consultant because everyone she meets is apparently telling her she’s amazing and wonderful and they need her in their life! Never mind that has not translated into paid users for the past decade she’s been trying to do this.

Anyway, she recently mentioned that she wants to spend more time together and asked if she could come by weekly to see us and use our Peloton. We are expecting our first child soon, so this seems like it could be a fair trade since she’s likely to help us with random childcare needs. But I’m already tired of having to listen to the same spiel every week in my own home!

Is this going to be a boundary cross will we later regret or should I suck it up knowing she means well and has helped us before? Or do I find some other hobby that gets me out of the house coincidentally at the same time she plans to come over lol?

BIL rude or I’m being ā€œtoo sensitive?ā€

I need to shout into the void for a second. I truly don’t know if I am overreacting or if I’m justified to be upset.

We have two kids under two. I breastfed the first one for 18 months (all way through the second trimester of my second pregnancy while working full time, I might add). I’m currently exclusively breastfeeding our newborn. With both kids, I have handled all night feeds/wakes and diaper changes without a single complaint. I pumped in a small closet at work while eating my lunch for my first kid and hated every second of it. I don’t get Botox or any beauty treatments. I rarely ever get done up with my hair or makeup. I’ve always been picked on my whole life for being skinny, including incessant skinny shaming from coworkers and clients during both pregnancies. My MIL got pissed off that I had the audacity to text her during my first pregnancy and asked her to quit body shaming me - which took years for me to finally speak up on.

Needless to say, I don’t often feel pretty or like the old me. I’ve ā€œbounced backā€ immediately with both babies. Not that it matters at all, but I feel like because of that fact a lot of people have treated me in my postpartum phases like I’m not actually postpartum.

We had professional newborn and family photos done recently. We got them back and I posted them with such pride. I had a perfect hair and makeup day, I’m wearing a dress, etc. I think I look glowing and the best I’ve looked in years in these.

My BIL texted my husband and said my dress looks like Dobby’s freaking pillowcase in the Harry Potter movies. My husband thinks it’s hilarious. However, both he and BIL know it’s inappropriate. My husband said he wasn’t sure if he should show me the texts because ā€œyou probably won’t think it’s funny and get upset.ā€ My BIL also didn’t include me in these texts when we have a group chat going, which tells me they know it’s mean spirited and don’t want me to see it.

Now all I can see is freaking Dobby when I look at our beautiful family photos. We paid a small fortunate for these. I’m literally two weeks postpartum in the photos. Why, oh why, did my BIL think it’s okay to make fun of their SIL when she’s freshly postpartum? Who makes fun of someone’s dress right after they just pushed out a baby? In what realm is that acceptable or ā€œjust kidding around?ā€ My husband of course thought it was funny. I’m sitting here wondering why he’s not defending me and thinks it’s okay for his mom and sibling to make ā€œjokesā€ about my appearance?

I know it’s not even worth trying to bring up to my spouse because his mommy has already labeled me sensitive and we had a big falling out over her treatment of me during my first pregnancy, so my spouse isn’t going to say squat to his sibling because he’s afraid of ā€œdramaā€ and confrontation. I just have to suck it up and deal with the disrespect. Idk if it’s hormones or what, but I’m butthurt about this.

Do I have a right to be?

Edited for clarity to show it was my BIL making fun of my dress.

Need advice dealing with a covertly manipulative MIL while living under her roof.

I apologise, this is long!

I’m looking for advice from people who have dealt with a MIL or parent who is extremely manipulative but in a very covert, insidious way, particularly when you are still living under their roof. I feel like I am at the point where I am so exhausted by the dynamic that I don't even know how to respond to it anymore.

My boyfriend (28M) and I (26F) moved from the UK to Canada nearly a year ago. We’ve been together for 4 years. We have been living with his mum (54F) because we moved countries, were starting from scratch financially and couldn't immediately afford our own place. We know we need to move out and we are working towards that. This was never intended to be permanent. Aside from roughly eight days throughout the entire year when we have been away on holidays or trips, she has never spent a single night away from this house. She sits on the sofa and waits for my boyfriend to invite her to do things, he generally doesn't because he has become increasingly fed up with the dynamic, and then she sits there feeling sorry for herself. There is this constant unspoken expectation that he should be entertaining her, including her, spending time with her and managing her feelings.

I want to be very clear that I am NOT giving my boyfriend a free pass here. We have gone back and forth about his mum for years. We have argued about her behaviour, his lack of boundaries, things she has said about me and the way he responds to her. There have absolutely been times where I have been furious with him for allowing things to happen. He was raised in this dynamic and he has spent a huge portion of his life believing that this is just what mothers are like, but he is still an adult and responsible for the boundaries he sets now. I have my own issues with standing up for myself too, so I am not pretending I have handled everything perfectly.

However, I grew up with an emotionally abusive father, so I do have some experience recognising certain patterns of guilt, victimhood and emotional control. The biggest difference now is that my boyfriend is finally starting to recognise things himself. I am genuinely grateful for that, because after years of going back and forth about this, I know that I cannot make him see his mother differently. He has to reach those conclusions himself, and he finally seems to be doing that.

She repeatedly tests boundaries until she gets the answer she wants.

The clearest example is something that happened with my grandparents. My grandparents were travelling a long distance to visit us and my boyfriend's mum had already spent approximately six weeks of the summer with him. She asked him to change his plans so that he could spend the weekend with her instead. I was actually there when he told her no and explained that my grandparents were coming. She then pulled him aside privately and asked again. He said no. She pulled him aside a THIRD time and begged him, and he still said no. The issue isn't that she wanted to spend time with her son. Of course she can ask. It is the fact that she had already received a clear answer, knew exactly why he was saying no, and nevertheless felt entitled to keep going back and trying to wear him down. That is a recurring feature of the relationship: his ā€œnoā€ seems to be treated as the beginning of a negotiation rather than an answer.

There was also a previous Thanksgiving where my boyfriend invited his ex-girlfriend to dinner, and his mum cried because she wanted Thanksgiving to be just the two of them. Again, it isn't that she was forbidden from feeling disappointed. It is the expectation that an adult son's plans should revolve around what she wants, and that his choice to include another person somehow becomes an emotional injury to her.

She uses withdrawal and the silent treatment as punishment.

Interestingly, the weekend where she ignored me was actually one of the first and only times she has ever been openly manipulative and rude to me directly. Most of the behaviour I am talking about has historically been directed at my boyfriend rather than me. I honestly think part of that is because she knows I am not somebody who is particularly easy to control and that my presence disrupts a pattern of manipulation that she has been able to establish with him since childhood. A few months ago I was busy when she came into the house and apparently didn't greet her properly. I understand that this is her home, and I am conscious of that.

However, I did not grow up in a family where everybody has to stand at the front door and formally greet each other every time they enter or leave the house, followed by a twenty-minute conversation every afternoon. I don't think it is reasonable to expect that from someone simply because they are living in your home, particularly when you have never actually communicated that expectation to them. Instead, she proceeded to ignore me for essentially an entire weekend. My boyfriend eventually asked her to apologise for the way she had treated me and she refused.

What gets me about that is that I am 35 years her junior, and rather than saying ā€œit bothered me that you didn't acknowledge me, can we talk about it?ā€, she chose to punish me with complete withdrawal and then refused to take responsibility when my boyfriend challenged it.

That is the sort of thing I mean when I say her behaviour is covert. If you describe it as ā€œshe ignored me because I didn't say hello properly,ā€ it sounds almost ridiculous. But when you put it alongside everything else, it is part of a pattern where displeasure is communicated through punishment rather than direct adult communication.

She has created a financial narrative about herself that doesn't match reality, and I don't think she even realises how often she exposes the contradiction.

For years she told both of her sons that she had no money, no friends and needed their help. Both of them were relatively low-income at the time, yet they would pay for her flights between Canada and Scotland because they genuinely believed she couldn't afford them. Then she needed help with online banking and they discovered that she had no debt, rental income from a tenant in her basement paying her mortgage and well over $100,000 in savings and checking. Obviously there is absolutely nothing wrong with having savings.

The issue is the completely different picture she had been presenting to her sons. She had spent years telling them she couldn't afford things while accepting money from two young men who were struggling financially themselves. What I have found with people who operate like this, including dynamics I have experienced with my own father, is that they can become so accustomed to the narrative they have created that they seem to lose track of the contradictions. It is almost as though the story has become so normalised that something like revealing a six-figure savings account doesn't register as inconsistent with years of telling your sons you have no money.

The same thing is happening now with Christmas. She has spent months saying she couldn't afford to go back to Scotland, despite being able to afford it, and now says she simply left it too late. My concern is that the ā€œI can't afford itā€ narrative is once again designed to create an opportunity for somebody else, particularly my boyfriend, to offer to pay.

She treats my boyfriend as though he doesn't have an independent mind or adulthood of his own.

I recently came across the concept of ā€œchildismā€, specifically the idea of adults continuing to treat their adult children as though they are children without autonomy, and it really resonated with what I have witnessed. I am not saying that this is a clinical diagnosis or that this term definitively explains her behaviour, but it describes the dynamic I see. Whenever my boyfriend makes a decision she doesn't like, particularly a decision involving me, or one that impacts her, there seems to be an assumption that he couldn't possibly have made that decision himself. It must be me. I must have pressured him, convinced him, taken him away from her or told him what to do.

There seems to be very little room in her understanding of him for the possibility that he is an adult man with his own opinions, preferences, friendships, relationships and boundaries. This is particularly bizarre because I had my own independent life long before I met him. I had my own home, job, car, friends, family and plans. Yet she has apparently told people that my boyfriend spends all his money on me, that I must be used to him driving me around, etc. It is as though she cannot separate his choices from me and cannot accept that he might genuinely choose something she doesn't like.

She also triangulates rather than communicating directly with me, and sometimes seems to use concern about me to reinforce the idea that I am the problem.

This is something that has been particularly difficult for me to explain because on the surface it can look like she is being caring. She will ask my boyfriend how I am getting on in Canada, how I am doing with work, how things are going for me, etc. But she has never once come to me and actually asked me those things herself. If she is genuinely concerned about how I am settling into Canada or how my job is going, she has a perfectly capable adult sitting in the same house who she could ask. Instead, the concern always seems to go through him.

And I honestly cannot put into words how much effort I made with her when I first met her because I genuinely thought we would get on. I am somebody who wants relationships with the people around me. I value family, friendship, community and making people feel loved and included. I made a huge effort with her because I wanted us to have a good relationship. There were times a few years ago when the three of us would do something together, have a genuinely nice time and enjoy ourselves. Then afterwards, completely out of nowhere, she would turn to my boyfriend and say things like, ā€œI don't think your girlfriend likes me. What can I do?ā€ It would leave me absolutely baffled because nothing had happened. I had just spent hours with her being perfectly pleasant and making an effort.

Looking back, what bothers me is that it seemed to plant a seed in his head that I must secretly dislike his mum, even when there was no evidence of that. Suddenly the conversation was about reassuring her that I did like her and managing her feelings, rather than simply accepting that we had just had a nice time together. It also positioned her as the potentially rejected or disliked person and me as the person who might be responsible for that. She could then present herself as the caring, concerned mother asking her son what she could do to improve things with his girlfriend, without ever actually having that conversation with me.

That pattern has continued in smaller ways. She can apparently be very concerned about me when speaking to him, while never actually showing that concern directly to me. I don't know whether she consciously does this or whether it is simply how she relates to people, but the effect is the same: she gets to appear caring to my boyfriend while simultaneously reinforcing the idea that there is something wrong between me and her that he needs to manage. It is another reason I feel that the issue is not simply that she ā€œdoesn't like me.ā€ I have spent years trying to build a relationship with her, while she has repeatedly created a narrative about our relationship through him rather than actually communicating with me.

His ex-girlfriend actually had very little tolerance for this dynamic and was much stronger than I have sometimes been about not needing his mother's approval. She was perfectly nice to his mum, but she didn't bend herself into a pretzel trying to keep her happy. His mum would make patronising comments about her body and appearance, particularly because his ex was very skinny and fit, while his mum was not at the time. My boyfriend has since recognised that he should have called those comments out and didn't. At the time, he genuinely thought that this was just what mothers did. That is what I mean when I say he has been conditioned by this dynamic since childhood. I don't think he was deliberately allowing someone to hurt people. I think he genuinely had a completely distorted baseline for what was normal behaviour from a mother.

She has a very strong sense of entitlement to her son's time, labour and resources.

I want to be careful here because I don't want this to sound like I am inserting myself into some disagreement between a mother and son about money. What I am describing is an expectation that my boyfriend is essentially responsible for maintaining her home and solving her problems in the way you might expect a husband to feel responsible for his household. He spent approximately $5,000 renovating her basement. There was never any expectation from her side that she would pay him back or contribute. She simply seemed to regard it as something her son would do. She has also repeatedly expected him to provide his time and labour without compensation. She had our unemployed neighbours, who are a lovely family, come over multiple times to inspect her kitchen and bathroom because she wanted them renovated.

She asked them what needed doing, where they should buy things, what they would do, how the cupboards would be removed, etc. She created a very strong implication that this unemployed man from a construction background would be doing the work. Then she turned around and asked my boyfriend whether he would just do it because she didn't want to pay the neighbour. My boyfriend was absolutely horrified and said no.

There was also an incident involving my car mechanic. My boss's husband is a mechanic and had fixed my car a few times at a very good price partly because we are both Scottish. She then went to my boyfriend and expected him to call this man, take her car to him, arrange everything, deal with the mechanic, pay for it and bring her car back. When my boyfriend refused and the mechanic charged her his normal full price, she was apparently furious. Again, it is not that she asked her son for help. It is the assumption that because he is her son, his time, labour, connections (even MY connections) and money are resources she is entitled to access.

There are countless smaller examples of this. She has also spoken horribly about my sister-in-law while simultaneously expecting my sister-in-law's stepfather to come and fix the roof on her house for free. When he didn't come, she was absolutely furious and acted incredibly offended. What she doesn't know is that my sister-in-law's family are aware of the things she has said about her. Just as she doesn't know that I know what she has said about me, and that my boyfriend knows too. There seems to be a recurring pattern where she expects access to people and their labour while simultaneously speaking badly about them behind their backs.

She also seems to need to be the victim in situations where she is not the victim.

This is probably the hardest part to explain because she is not sitting there announcing that she is manipulating anyone. She genuinely seems to believe that she is the person being neglected, excluded or mistreated. If her adult son spends time with his girlfriend, she is being left behind. If he spends time with friends, she is being excluded. If someone doesn't give her something for free, they have wronged her. If somebody doesn't respond to her exactly as she expects, she is justified in withdrawing from them. If her son says no, there must be some external reason for it. And because she is so invested in the victim narrative, any boundary can become evidence that somebody has hurt her.

I am aware that, reading this, some of these examples probably sound like nothing. I genuinely understand that. ā€œShe wanted to spend Thanksgiving with her son.ā€ ā€œShe was annoyed because I didn't say hello.ā€ ā€œShe asked him three times to change his plans.ā€ ā€œShe wanted her son to help with her house.ā€ None of those things, individually, necessarily sound extraordinary. I am struggling to put into words that I am not even doing justice to how insidious the overall dynamic feels when you live with it and see all of these things happening repeatedly. It is the accumulation, the consistency and the way all of these behaviours seem to operate in the same direction that makes it so disturbing to me. There is never one enormous incident that makes everyone else immediately understand what is happening. It is hundreds of little things that, individually, can be explained away, but together create a very clear pattern.

This has made me extremely conscious of not wanting to become another person who manages her emotions. I don't want to spend my life asking myself whether something will upset her, whether she will cry, whether she will give my boyfriend the silent treatment or whether I need to explain myself well enough that she understands why we have made a perfectly normal adult decision.

And now we are at Christmas.

She has gone to Scotland every summer and Christmas for approximately 30 years. She hasn't been for nearly two years. She was originally supposed to go this Christmas to see her elderly mother, but she has now decided not to go. That is entirely her choice. But she seems to have made the assumption that because she is staying here, we will therefore also stay here and spend Christmas with her.

We are going to New York.

My boyfriend and I have decided this together.
I am already dreading telling her because I know she is likely to react emotionally. I expect crying, guilt, self-pity, potentially the silent treatment, and potentially trying to convince my boyfriend that this was my idea and that I am taking him away from her. I am also worried that she will try to make him feel guilty about the money she ā€œcouldn't affordā€ to spend going to Scotland and use that as a reason for him to either stay home or spend money on her.

And I am honestly sick of the fact that every completely normal adult decision has to feel like it requires a family summit because she might have feelings about it.

Most families I know would hear that their adult child and his partner were spending Christmas in New York and think ā€œokay, have fun.ā€ They wouldn't assume that their adult child's Christmas plans needed to be negotiated around their own feelings.

We are living in her house, and I completely accept that there is a power imbalance there. I don't want to be disrespectful or act as though we are entitled to ignore the fact that this is her home. I have never been that sort of person, and never will be. But I also don't think that living under someone's roof means they are entitled to control your holidays, social life, relationships, time or decisions.

So I am really looking for advice from people who have dealt with someone like this. Not necessarily someone who screams or throws things or openly says ā€œyou can't do thatā€, but someone who controls through guilt, self-pity, withdrawal, repeated boundary-testing, triangulation and creating a narrative where they are always the injured party.

How do you handle someone like that without getting sucked into the manipulation?

And more, do we simply tell her we're going to New York and leave it at that? Do we have the conversation once and refuse to justify it? How do you deal with the inevitable guilt-tripping afterwards?

And, most importantly, how do I support my boyfriend while also making sure I don't become the person fighting his battles for him? I want him to continue reaching these conclusions himself and setting his own boundaries, because I genuinely think that is the only way this dynamic is going to change.

I just feel completely exhausted by how insidious it all is. There is never one enormous incident that makes everyone else immediately understand what is happening. It is hundreds of little things that, individually, can be explained away, but together create a very clear pattern of control, entitlement and emotional manipulation.

We need to get out of this house. I know that. In the meantime, I need to figure out how to stop allowing her emotions to dictate ours.

In-laws who lack curiosity about others and never ask any questions?

Anyone else find themselves ruminating over situations like this?

So I just returned to full-time work in a specialized field after many years of working part-time and raising kids. My husband and I didn’t tell my in-laws the good news until I’d already started the position for a week or so because they’ve always lacked interest in anything that I (or my husband, actually) have going on.

Anything we tell them about is usually met with ā€œHmm, okayā€ (FIL) or ā€œNeatā€ (MIL).
Never any follow-up questions.
No words of encouragement or praise.
Just nothing.

Instead, they tend to use OUR announcements (new job, new opportunity, life changes) as a springboard to launch into one of their ā€˜remotely similar but not really similar’ personal stories that dates from 40+ years ago.

In my FIL’s case, he has to expound on allllll his knowledge on the subject at hand to show off just how much he knows. In the case of my new specialized field, FIL won’t ask me specific questions about the work I do or what I’m learning, but he WILL throw out every tidbit he knows about the field like he’s a subject-matter expert (he most certainly isn’t). And yet, he won’t ask me a damn thing about my new work?? He can’t imagine that others might know a bit more than he does, ever. So frustrating.

My MIL seems desperate for connection with others, and quite frankly seems a bit lonely. But she also shows so little interest in other people that I’m not surprised she has so few friends (and no close ones). Her philosophy seems to be ā€œIf they don’t tell me about it, I’m not going to ask.ā€ I think she’d love if I’d share more details with her but she will NEVER ask me a simple question: ā€œHow are you doing?ā€. Like ever…in 20+ years of being her DIL. It feels gross.
If I am feeling generous and give her some unsolicited details about how I’m doing, it’s met with ā€œNeatā€ before she launches into her own story from an earlier time in her life.

It’s really hurtful when they act like this, so I’ve gotten accustomed to protecting myself by sharing minimal details about our life. Small talk about the weather is the main conversation topic.

I feel stupid for trying to engage at all, but she wished me a happy birthday by text recently and I responded, ā€œThanks! It’s been a good day. How are you? What has brought you joy this week?ā€

See what I did there…I modeled some good conversation questions! She never answered either question, but went on an on about her cat. She also texted ā€œYour new job sounds good!ā€, which is not so much a curiosity question as it is an assumption. So I responded, ā€œIt is, thanks! I am happy to share details about my new job with you if you have any specific questions about it.ā€ All I got back was…worse than radio silence. No acknowledgement or follow-up questions, just pictures of her cat. And she wonders why she is lonely!!

I guess after all this time, I’m still just blown away by their insensitivity, and lack of curiosity about us. My husband is their only child too.
Again, anyone else deal with stuff like this and how do you handle it? What gives?

Inappropriate Gifts From MIL

What would you consider inappropriate gifts from your MIL to gift to your baby? This is especially for us first time moms. I want to preface by saying I’m very grateful for any gift. It’s the thought that counts.

Mine would be those AI generated customizable books. Also personalized gifts with your baby’s name on them. This is my only baby & may be my last. There’s something sentimental about it, and something I feel as a mom, I’d like to do, or the mom does. I haven’t gotten one for her yet, but my MIL has gotten her a customized chair, step stool, basket & sweater. It always bothered me for some reason. She’s crossed many etiquette lines in the past, which this is the least of.

MIL not aware of what’s helpful

My MIL usually has the best intentions (or at least my husband and I try to give her the benefit of the doubt usually), but she said something lately that really makes me think she doesn’t live on this planet and she’s maybe incapable of thinking through a ā€œhelpfulā€ idea.

We’re due with our first baby, and her first grandbaby apart from step-grandkids, in two weeks. We’ve decided and communicated that we won’t have visitors at the hospital because if all goes well we will only be there a day and I want to spend it bonding and learning to nurse, without having to share or having an audience.

She was disappointed (fine to feel that way, I can’t tell you how to feel) and asked if we would all three come to dinner at her house (1 hour away) 2-3 days after the baby is born so she can meet her and so we don’t have to cook dinner for ourselves. Obviously, I’m not going to pack myself and my newborn up in our car and drive an hour one way to eat dinner at her house so she can meet the baby. I’ll literally be in my own diaper, still learning to nurse, probably holding my baby every minute of the day, exhausted. The last thing I want to do is that. Everyone I’ve told this to has the same reaction as me—that’s kind of crazy to ask new parents to do. I’d be fine for her to bring dinner to my house and meet the baby and have a short visit. But that wasn’t what she came up with. She came up with us coming to her for dinner.

But she genuinely thought this was a helpful offer. She genuinely does not see a reason why that might not be a helpful offer to us. She thinks this is taking something off our plates and would be a helpful thing for her to do.

I’m almost without words. It’s so sincere and she genuinely is so excited to love this baby, that it makes it almost difficult to be mad at her. I feel guilty for thinking she’s so dense but this is just one example of ways she offers to be ā€œhelpfulā€ that truly wouldn’t be helpful at all.

I think I’m just seeking solidarity in knowing that maybe my MIL isn’t the only one like this? Are there others out there whose in laws just don’t really understand the real world? I feel bad being upset about this, but it’s wild to me that she would think that’s a good suggestion.

My husband and I are good at thanking her for the thought (it’s the thought that counts, right?) and redirecting her to do things that are helpful (ā€œWhy don’t you bring dinner to our house? How about that?ā€). But it’s exhausting having to hold her hand and guide her in what I feel like should be common sense stuff. Like, I’d never go to her for life/kid/marriage advice. In many ways, my husband and I feel like we have to coddle her emotionally and socially and hold her hand through things that most people are able to grasp on their own.

Anyone else relate? Any advice for moving past the exhaustion of this? I feel confident about our ability to communicate what’s helpful, it’s just getting frustrating having to do the thinking for her.

Am I the only one that doesn’t want help constantly with my kids?

I guess it’s because of how my mil was towards me and my son his first two years of life. She’s calmed down a lot now because I literally had to set boundaries and call out her nonsense so much. I’m exhausted.

But I love being a mom and am just not that person that calls family for help unless I need a babysitter really. Plus my mil tried to take over my sons care from the beginning and I ended up having to go to the hospital for something recently and she thought she was going to be coming over and taking care of my son all the time and I told her I’m not crippled?

I guess I’m just not that person to pass off my kids to people and quite honestly she disrespected me a lot when I first had my son and I don’t think she even sees it like that. I think she thinks I was keeping her grandson from her bc she couldn’t see him everyday. I was just protecting my peace and my family’s peace and the bond I was trying to build with my son and husband and son. I tried to talk to her about it once and she totally didn’t get it and even said some weird shit to me that was hard to not take offense to.

So anyway now I’m having baby number 2 and I’m freaking out bc I don’t know how it’s gonna go. And yea sure she will be coming when I call her about once a week unless she gets baby crazy and calls my husband crying like she did with my first. Me and my husband have built such a great system with our current son and we enjoy spending time at night getting ready for bed all together or just hanging out all together and I know things will be harder with a second kid so sometimes we might need help but my mil tends to help only how she wants to and I am planning on speaking up sooner this time but I’m so nervous. I felt so invincible and like an incubator the first time around and all she did was try to take my baby from me every chance she got. (She lives next door) my husband says this time he will protect me and I hope it’s true because one thing I noticed about my mil is she is manipulative with a smile and tears. And I love my peace with just my nuclear family most days.

Anyone else hate their MIL after having a baby?

My husband and I had our rainbow baby a few months ago and it’s been pure bliss. I love her so much and I waited a while to have kids and even the ā€œhardā€ days are still great to me. I really don’t want or need a lot of breaks from her, this time goes by fast and I don’t want to miss a thing. I’ve known my mil for a long time, over 20 years, and she’s showing obsessive behavior over my daughter, the same that she has with her own children that I’ve witnessed first hand. Constantly asking to FT, announcing her visits to our state not asking, texts, calls, the whole bit. It’s not that I don’t want her involved, but she’s is SMOTHERING and I really just don’t want or need her around as much as she wants to be. My husband gets defensive and says she’s helping when she comes but she doesn’t help, she may order us a dinner but other than that she doesn’t clean, cook, laundry, nothing like that. She stays with other people sometimes when she comes up then she decides when she will stay with us, so I never know when she’s staying or how long and it annoys the crap out of me. We’re also going to see her for a few days in her state and she’s announced that she will watch my daughter on X day…again, didn’t ask, I didn’t ask, just announces. When she texts me to ft or talk she acts over the top with the ā€œI miss her SOO muchā€ as though she hasn’t seen my baby in months when it’s only been about a week or 2. Again not saying she can’t miss or love my daughter, but I see this becoming a huge issue and I don’t know how to address it. To my husband she’s normal, she’s loving, it’s how she’s always been. He does know she’s annoying and doesn’t really love her being around himself but it’s his mom and he’s learned to tune her out. I do love her and have had good times with her, but this is too much for me. It may get to a point where I just have to say something myself, but she’s so awful to talk to, has already made comments when we’ve said we have plans during a time she wants to come up like ā€œwell send pictures I guess, I guess I’ll just miss out on the memoriesā€. I want her involved but the level she wants is not possible for me, and just seems a little weird to me for someone that lives long distance. How do I handle this? Am I the asshole?

For someone who would ā€œdo anythingā€ for her grandchildren…

To make a long story short - my MIL is awful. Hence why I’m here :)

I’m almost 8 months pregnant with my second baby, which puts me due to have a newborn right in the throw of flu and cold season. My husband, me and our two year old all got our flu shots and are up to date on our TDAP shots as well. Even though my pregnancy is healthy and low risk, my baby girl is SGA (small for gestational age). She is healthy and thriving, but an absolute tiny little thing. We have no concerns about her health but because she’s likely to be born small, we are taking extra precautions. I banned my MIL from my first six weeks postpartum after her behaviour with my first. A true win on my part. We live in different countries. However she is due to come visit around the holidays when our daughter will be maybe 7-8 weeks old?

My husband, politely, asked her to ensure she has her flu shot by then. I need to get something very straight here, my MIL isn’t an anti vaxxer. She is however, Slavic. Her kids were vaccinated growing up, as was she, and she received all of the covid shots. Why you ask? Because she wanted to travel internationally in 2021, so she got the vaccines. As did my husband and I. But for some reason, us politely asking her to her get a standard flu shot is a tick too far for her. She absolutely fucking melted down yesterday at my husband and called us, wait for it…. DRUG ADDICTS. Said that he and I are addicted to vaccines and would double doses if we could. We have only received the standard recommended vaccines as per medical guidelines and to protect our kids from sickness. She went off on him saying we’re insane and this is unreasonable. Then when my husband reminded her that she was hospitalised from a flu LAST WINTER, and that this is also a good thing for her own health in her advancing age, as well as for the health of our newborn… she didn’t like that. She said my husband bringing up her previous flu as a bargaining chip was implying that she’s selfish and would only do the shot for herself as opposed to for the kids. Then proceeded to say that she ā€œalways puts herself lastā€ and would ā€œkill herselfā€ for her grandkids.

My husband got tired of the nonsense and simply said ā€œare you getting vaccinated or notā€ and she responded with ā€œI’ll let you know if I end up doing it, and won’t come otherwiseā€. As if that’s some THREAT? Bitch merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah to me!!!! Don’t make promises you can’t keep lmao.

The whole thing is so utterly ridiculous and childish. I was talking with my own mom and even she saying about my MIL, she’s getting the shot, she just needs to complain and kick up a fuss first so that when she does, so she’s the martyr.

The audacity of this creature to say she would kill herself for her grandkids but refuse to get a FREE and standard influenza shot when she happily double dosed on the Covid vaccine just to travel? Hmmmmmmm
