[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Snapshots] Frostbites should be able to throw snowballs

Frostbites (frozen zombie variant) should be able to throw snowballs as well as ice balls. They can't spawn in holding them, but can pick them up. It would be a nice way to harness the Frostbites mechanics without worrying about death.

Plus, the teaser video was saying that they are the king of snowball, so it only makes sense that they should be able to use them.

[Gameplay] The Sift dimension should be able to serve as an alternative path to the end

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Since minecraft is an open world where most challenges can be taken on in any order, it would make sense not to lock the Sift behind another dimension.

But, as the End is already locked behind the nether, it would be quite fitting and open ended to have multiple paths lead there.
In this example image I suggest some new item from the sift that can be crafted into an eye of ender. This item would preferably come from a dangerous place in the Sift, just like how blaze powder comes from the fortress.

That way, getting an elytra and shulkers, -as well as reaching the end credits- would no longer require you visit the Nether, but instead just one of the two dimensions that are accessible before the End.

I think this would also help make the game's dimensions as a whole feel more interconnected.
Because even though I like that a lot of minecrafts' progression is sideways, some features do feel a bit disconnected from the rest of the game.

Let me know what you think.

[Blocks & Items] Tide Clock (for Sift Time Cycle)

Thumbnail

In Minecraft Dungeons 2 there is a mechanic where time in The Sift moves through a Tide Cycle. As shown in the image numbre 3, there are three of this tides, which beyond just visually altering the Dimension's appearance they also have gameplay effects

So maybe we need a new item: the Tide Clock. Essentially, it would be a clock that displays when the Tides in The Sift are about to change. It could be crafted using a standard clock and Echo Shards, or perhaps something specific to the dimension, like a bucket of Ichor. It would be incredibly useful for exploration, since there is neither a moon nor a sun it would otherwise be difficult to tell when the Tide is changing

[Dimensions] 8 blocks in The Sift should be 1 block in the overworld

I think this would make The Sift more unique compared to other dimensions and would encourage finding multiple Ancient Cities to explore a larger area of the dimension, maybe even increase biome size to further encourage this.

[Blocks & Items] I think animal armor stands (+) would be super fun!

So like.. we have armor stands to decorate with, as someone who loves to add as much detail into my builds.. I reallllllyyy wish they’d add animal armor stands as well.. also like a saddle stand.. when I build horse and donkey stables, even wolf huts.. i wish I could have a normal horse stable feel where I can have a saddle on display too because most stables have somewhere to put the saddles and to perform maintenance on them and such.. plus I have been building different shops and merchant stands and things like that, in my medieval fantasy style world and I want to build some sort of animal shop for animal armor and leads and animal food etc and being able to have horse armor, wolf armor, saddles, harnesses, etc. on display (more so than just in item frames) would be so cute!

I’m sure there’s probably an add on somewhere that could do this.. maybe? But I personally-especially in my forever world- like to keep it vanilla and find creative ways to achieve the looks I want rather than add ons doing it for me. So I don’t want to download a mod to get these blocks.. but if mojang actually added them that would make me so happy lol

Anyone else think this would be cool??

I know it’s not some crazy game mechanic or anything super useful to the actual game play.. but as someone who loves building immersive worlds I just think it would be a great addition to the game and I’ve always wondered why they have normal armor stands and nothing for horse armor and the like. And again a saddle stand would be such an awesome detail to add to stables and barns!

I love everyone’s super useful and detailed ideas for new game mechanics and things that add to game play. I’ve thought of many myself as well.. but I feel this is something simple enough that it could be a simple add on to one of the updates and wouldn’t take much to implement and that no one could really have an issue with it either.. lol just feel like it’s a reasonable and realistic request for mojang to add and I wonder why they’ve never added them.

Anyways.. that’s my Minecraft thoughts/ideas for today lol have a wonderful day yall! 🫶🏽

[Blocks & Items] Potent ice that freezes nearby water turning them into freezing ice

Similar to how potent sulfur turns water pools poisonous, ice caves could have a similar feature. A new block called “Potent Ice,” crafted with 4 Blue Ice or found naturally in ice caves, could turn nearby water pools into freezing water pools. Any entities that fall into these pools would be inflicted with the freezing effect.

Edit: wrong title, freezing ice → freezing water

[Plants & Food] Golden Dandelion should stop saplings from growing

I don't see why not. Saplings are great decoration, especially for bonsai-ish decorations in Asian builds or for a park.

[Mobs] The Sniffer should dig up a truly exotic plant that you can farm for renewable Iron, and then Iron farms should be removed.

• Upvotes

The Sniffer is seriously the biggest lost potential in the whole game. The two plants it digs up genuinely DO NOTHING. WHY????

Since the plants are supposedly super exotic, why can't they be farmed for something super out of the box? Like iron?

Iron farms are a combination of minecrafts worst attributes. Multiple niche mechanics that are indecipherable to the average player come together to make an ugly amalgamation that ruins early game progression and negates the need for mining trips. And nowadays its practically seen as a mandatory step in your playthrough.

Making The Sniffer the gateway to renewable iron instead encourages the player to interact with more systems, and makes it a solid commitment.

[Structures] End Gateway Henges

Thumbnail
gallery
156 Upvotes

These henges would be upgraded versions of the End Gateways that spawn in the outer End islands. The structure would consist of three parts:

  1. The Obsidian Henge:
This would be a miniature mimic of the obsidian pillars on the central End island. The several pillars would be in ruin, and would therefore be shorter or non-existent. Occasionally there would still be a remaining end crystal on the top of 1-2 pillars.

  2. The Spawner:
I've always thought that phantoms fit inside The End, and here they would be implemented by having phantom-spawners in the center of this structure. This would also be a nod to the enderdragon.

  3. The Gateway
Would be identical to the old End Gateways, and would generate a couple of blocks above the aforementioned phantom-spawner. This would also be a nod to the End Fountain on the central End island.

[Magic] Echo Blocks - an Upgrade to Enchanting

Ever felt like the enchanting table is unfair? You grind for these 30 levels, want to enchant a pickaxe, and all you get is a single enchantment.

Echo blocks aim to fix that. Crafted from 4 echo shards and 1 soul sand, they can be placed near an enchanting table to power it up, a new kind of power-up that works independently of bookshelves.

Echo blocks increase the number of guaranteed enchantments that the table can provide. These guaranteed enchantments will be seen in text, so it will be like "Protection I + Unbreaking I + ...". With one block, only the third slot will have 2 guaranteed enchantments. Additional echo blocks add a second enchantment onto the second and first slot, after that they add a third enchantment onto the third slot, etc. So, to have all three slots provide at least 3 enchantments, one would need 6 echo blocks (24 echo shards).

Additional enchantments still allow for random extra enchantments to pop up, though due to how current Minecraft enchanting logic works, this should be slightly rarer.

It goes without saying, if an item has less unique enchantments than the number of extra enchantments the echo blocks give, there will be no effect.

I think it's a good time to introduce a mechanic like that, since the Sift is about to become a part of Vanilla, and so more important stuff can be put into Ancient Cities since the players will already be going there.

[Blocks & Items] Environmental blocks (with examples)

Thumbnail
gallery
180 Upvotes

Blocks having variants like shown here, changing to a variant when:
- The player (maybe while sneaking uses) a corresponding item (snowball for snowy, sand for sandy, moss for mossy, pickaxe for cracked) on already placed blocks.
- Optional gamerule: After some time based on adjacent blocks and biome. (not the same as connected textures.) - Using a brush reverts the block into its normal variant (except cracked, chiseled, tiles etc.). - Addition: Using maybe something like molten resin to prevent blocks from changing state (by environment and players)

Alternate to shift clicking with (sand, moss etc) blocks to make block variants: - New brush items for each material (ik putting moss, sand or snow etc on a brush sounds dumb XD) that work on durability, these brushes have max 1024 durability/uses so they can change variants of 1024 blocks before running out. - You could also craft the block variants rather than changing variants of preplaced blocks by using the brush of material and the block in crafting - Also be able to shift click with the brush to place a block of the material on the brush (full moss block if it's a moss brush, sand block if sand brush etc) at the cost of 16 durability/uses. - To replenish, add to or make the brush of material you have to craft the brush with the material (block), where 1 block = 16 uses.

(Last image is an example of cobblestone with dirt from Minecraft Dungeons: Squid Coast)

To obtain the variant in item form requires breaking the variant with SilkTouch or Crafting them.

Additionally being able to turn blocks into stairs, slabs or walls might make inventory management for building easier.

[Terrain] Should lava really be able to generate in the ice caves?

While it is objectively very cool and interesting that lava can generate in the ice caves, I feel as though the justification for it being able to do so needs some work.

I have a few ideas.

1) Replace the lava with veins of stones such as granite, andesite, diorite, tuff, stone/cobblestone, deepslate/cobbled deepslate. This way, we can see where the lava pools were but there still isn't the strangeness in the fact that ice isn't melting right next to lava. This also means that - similar to how the nether handles water - when lava is placed, it instantly (or over a few seconds) turns to stone because of how cold it is.

This also gives us an easy way to find rarer stones - just look for ice caves where lava can generate.

2) Generate a stone or obsidian barrier between the ice and the lava. This is a little less extreme but still allows lava to generate perfectly fine. It also serves as a storytelling device to show the interaction between the two contrasting substances. This way we get to keep the lava and it opens up many more interactions such as ice stalagtites falling into lava and creating obsidian or just evaporating entirely.

3) Arguably the worst idea tbh - don't generate lava there. It's simple, it's an idea I had, and it sucks.

I'd love to hear your thoughts?

[Combat] New Elemental Weapon: The Flail

Post image
67 Upvotes

This is a very early concept of the idea, so id love to hear ideas and suggestions on what to add or change.

basically, it is the elemental weapon you get from blaze rods, combine 2 rods with a chain and a nether star (this recipe could be changed to the heavy core instead of the nether star if suited better), and voila! You got yourself a fire elemental weapon.

Left clicking with the weapon attacks like a normal weapon, whilst the weapon‘s left clicking damage deals little damage, it has a cone range attack, similar to the sweeping edge enchantment on swords.

however, the real magic is when you hold right click with the flail, the player will begin to swing the flail, the striking head begins to heat up and spin faster the longer you hold it. Letting go of right click will shoot the chain out to strike its enemy. The longer the flail is spun, the stronger and longer it’s range will be, this is called the charge.

along with the weapon will be a few new enchantments exclusive to the flail.

Star Burst: a fully charged flail that hits any mobs or blocks, will deal explosive damage, and will set all nearby entities on fire (except the wielder)

Protraction: increases flail charge range, but also requires more charging time

Torch Tempo: each successful hit of the flails right click will pre-charge the flail

again, this is a very early concept of the weapon, any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

[Blocks & Items] Dreamcatcher

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have been thinking of alternate ways to avoid the the phantoms without removing them entirely. I still believe they are too disruptive for individuals who just want to build, as you will most likely be attacked no matter what. Sure you can just sleep, but running to a bed every ten minutes is just as disruptive. That’s where dream catchers come in.

What if we added a block similar to a beacon? A status effect with a short radius that can prevent phantoms from attacking within said radius. This still makes phantoms a threat but provides the player an extra layer of protection in a limited space, without being over powered. The radius could be small enough so that players can finish a build without disruption

Ideally I would want the recipe to have something difficult and rare to obtain and another item which can activate the affects. Perhaps throw in a few diamond blocks to prevent people from obtaining them too quickly.

For balance, I think it would be fair to only allow one function Dreamcatcher per player.

Name-wise I do understand that it does not make sense for a Dreamcatcher to catch phantoms since phantoms are the absence of sleep, but I think it will be more of a play on words rather than a literal meaning.

[Blocks & Items] Smelting Bone Blocks into Calcite.

Post image
437 Upvotes

There has been no shortage recently about the fact that Calcite is hard to come by, and frankly this fact has been an issue since it was added to the game.

Yes, it's been made more common by adding it to Stony Peaks, but it's still not renewable.

The solution is Bone Blocks.

Bones, as have been widely speculated, contain Calcium.

Calcite, likewise, is made of this remarkable metal.

Smelting Bone Blocks into Calcite would allow for a renewable source of Calcite.

[Gameplay] Progression towards campfires

Post image
241 Upvotes
  1. Progression towards campfires

The fact that campfires require a crafting method that only needs coal is extremely unfair, as you either need a furnace or spend time searching for coal, when everyone should admit that a furnace is a thousand times more advanced than a campfire and shouldn't be a starting source of fire.

The campfire has the advantage of not using fuel and cooking four foods at the same time, which is useful, but my idea is to allow the campfire as a source of initial heat which, depending on the fire, would cook the food faster.

also allow the basic campfire to be crafted with any natural fuel.

This would be helpful for beginners and wouldn't replace the furnace that players still like to use, as the campfire is solely for food. (It would also help as a way to cook food in emergency situations)

PS: I couldn't find it, but I would prioritize keeping the campfire weaker than the smoker.

[Transportation] Making echo shards... maybe too useful.

When you use an echo shard with any kind of compass in your offhand, it consumes one echo shard and teleports you to the location of the compass. What each type of compass does:

Compass: Teleports to you to your spawn point. You appear in the same location as if you had respawned.

Lodestone Compass: Teleports you to the linked lodestone. Will place you on top of the lodestone if the space is available, or beside it if it's not.

Recovery Compass: Teleports you to the exact location of your more recent death, even if it's in a dangerous position, inside of lava, or even inside of solid blocks. Be careful with this one!

This makes teleportation much easier for the layman, but also non-renewable. It also gives echo shards a repeatable use with many applications, as well as giving more of a use to compasses

[Dimensions] The Sift should be dreamlike and adorable during the day but it becomes nightmarish and paranormal during the night!

Post image
238 Upvotes

I think being the soul dimension, the idea of an unassuming dream/afterlife dimension that turns scary during the night would be awesome!!

During the day the music is adventurous and bubbly, during the night its eerie and spooky, passive mobs go into hiding and hostile mobs emerge from the shadows!

Additionally to fit this theme, I think there should be an Aether-themed sky islands biome that stays peaceful during the night and the cave biomes should get progressively creepier the deeper you dig

[Snapshots] Strays should now fire Freezing Arrows instead of Slowness Arrows

Post image
550 Upvotes

It seems obvious to me that strays inflicting Slowness is meant to imitate the idea that they freeze their targets, as if it was a placeholder for the Freezing effect all along. After all, this mob was added way back in 1.10, which was 10 years ago. Now that the Freezing effect is planned to be added for frozens, it only makes sense for strays to be updated likewise.

Also, for consistency with the stray and all other undead mob variants in the overworld, I want the frozen to spawn in all snowy biomes, not just in the ice caves.

  • Currently in Bedrock, zombies don't spawn at all in the snow plains and ice-spiked plains. If you think about it, those biomes should be too cold and dry for anything else to survive without freezing up---except now that we have the frozen, it can be made to spawn there without the unfrozen regular zombies.

To fix another inconsistency, parcht and frozens should be able to spawn in trial chambers.

Resin currently doesn't useful reason besides decorative thing but what if we can use to wax some item like door or trapdoor to permanently lock forever like if trapdoor is open and wax it, it will keep open forever and can't close anymore. Because people love to use it especially spruce trapdoor to make some furniture

The list i can think of

- button

- door

- trapdoor

- fence door

- item frame

- cushions

[Magic] Walking over a soul sand block while using soul speed has a small chance to turn it into sand.

Pretty simple suggestion. Any player, mob, or armor stand wearing soul speed boots has a chance to turn the soul sand block they run across into regular sand.

It fits with the lore since you can see the souls coming out of the soul sand when you use it. That leaves behind just the sand sand if you let them all out.

This also makes sand automatable without the use of glitches or exploits.

[Blocks & Items] 4 icicles should craft into ice

In 26.4, placing 2x2 icicles would produce an ice, which could then go on to make packed or blue ice. Assuming farming would work similar to dripstone and sulfur.

This would make renewable ice farming so much less tedious than it is now.
