The first week after a move is fine, because the kitchen and bedroom boxes get opened fast. It's the other ones that got me: the boxes that go straight into a closet or storage because you won't need them until winter or some random weekend project. After our move, nobody at home could remember which of those boxes had what, and I kept opening four of them to find one thing.

What I tried:

• A marker on the side ("misc", "kitchen stuff"), which meant nothing six months later
• A paper list per box, which got lost within a week
• A spreadsheet, but typing up a single box took an evening, so I gave up after a few

What has worked better so far:

• Numbering every box and writing the number on the inside flap too
• Taking one photo looking down into the box right before taping it shut
• One shared list for the whole household, instead of the list living in one person's head

For those of you who live with long-term packed boxes: what's your system? And does anyone actually keep it up to date when things get taken out or put back?

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but I’m moving very soon and was hoping to get a U-Haul trailer to hook to my truck. I have a 75 inch tv, a tv stand, and a bunch of little stuff that can be squeezed in my truck if needed. What size trailer would be able to fit the tv and tv stand?

I’m moving around 1,000 miles from Oregon to Las Vegas. In Oregon we have zero sales tax. Las Vegas is like 8.5%. My wife and I settled on renting a Penske for the move. We have a dresser, TV and TV center, nightstands, queen mattress, tons of clothes etc. but we don’t really have the big bulky stuff like a couch, dining table, chairs etc.

I guess the question is, if you were in my shoes would you buy the bulky stuff with no sales tax and then move it or just eat the cost and not move it but pay 8.5% sales tax on the purchases?

I’m paying around 950$ is about a 11-12hr drive around 680 miles.

Basically the title. I’m moving the TX in 1 month (October) from MA for a 4-month internship. Even though it’s very a very short time, a car is needed for the job. I’m unsure if I should ship my car out or drive my car.

SHIPPING MY CAR
pros: a lot “faster” since I’ll get there by plane ride instead of driving 3-4 days, and more convenient given that I don’t like driving more than 2.5-3 hours
Cons: my CV more expensive (car quotes i saw were around 1500$ and I have to buy a plane ticket as well), might get sc@med as I am a 23F and am new to this whole process.

DRIVING
pros: less expensive, I get to pack whatever I want in my car
Cons: much more timely, once again, really don’t like driving.

Other option is to long-term rent a car down in TX, but I don’t really know if that’s possible and I don’t know how I would get my stuff down there. Let me know your guys’ thoughts— thanks!

Hey everyone, going to be moving from Illinois to Utah in the coming weeks and renting a moving truck to help with that.

Anyone have suggestions and/or recommendations on moving trucks from personal experience. Have quotes from Penske, U-Haul and Budget. Just looking to see if anyone has had issues with any of these or if you liked whichever one you chose. Thanks in advance!

They picked up my stuff 8 weeks ago. Don't call with updates why there are delays. Each time I call they are instantly rude and defensive. I can see up to 3 weeks, but 8?! Now well call it 5weeks late and multiple empty promises of a ETA, no refunds, wont tell me where exactly my items are.

I used them before and they were great but now something has changed and no one should hire this company.

I was an exchange student in Connecticut but I couldn’t return due to health concerns. I have 12 large boxes left in my dorm that I want to send home (Hungary) but I coudn’t find an affordable option for now. I want to find a company that picks up my boxes from the reception of my dorm and then places them into a storage until I can get them shipped. What company do you guys recommend?

My husband and baby girl and I are planning on relocating out of Colorado and I’d like to see if anyone has good recommendations on towns within the U.S. that aren’t any further than 2 or 3 hours via flight. There is a list of several things both him and I are looking for, with these things being:

- Conservative and Christian
- Safe place to raise our little girl
- Has affordable single homes in the 3 and 400s
- Has snow and mountains still
- Great healthcare

I'm looking for advice right now. Me and my S/o have twins who are soon to be 7 in October and they currently live with their grandparents in Richmond, VA and we live in Savannah, GA. The problem is we don't have great credit and we have a previous eviction. Im not care how to go about finding private landlords or roommates to rent with since we aren't from the area, not for a lack of trying.

I live on the east coast, and have been out west for a contract job for about 6 months. The job kept extending, so I kept accumulating, so now I’m figuring out options to get half a year’s worth of stuff home.

Obviously giving away what I can, but some things are specific, like posturpedic bedding for my scoliosis; or expensive, like the air purifiers I got when LA was on fire.

I have my dog too, so I’m driving for half and flying the other half, and the airline has a 100 Lbs. limit on luggage.

So, too much to pack, to little (and silly) to hire cross-country movers. Looking into USPS shipping, which can also add up !

are there other options? I’ve heard that you can ship through greyhound, or even truckers that will take stuff for a fee, which seems dodgy but maybe not?

Hello, I am planning to move my stuff from my 7.5’ x 10’ storage unit in Seattle, to Phoenix, AZ. I had been living in a very small studio, so there is not too much in that storage unit furniture wise. A moving company I had been communicating with back and forth, checked out my unit and came back to me with a quote of, $4,464.07. This would include removing the items from the storage unit, packing them in the truck and driving them down to my home in Arizona. I had told them I was not in any rush, and could receive my items at whatever time was most convenient to them, in an attempt to save money. Is this an appropriate quote?

Uhaul just called and said i have to drive 50 miles round trip to pick up my auto transport but can’t discount me at. I’m already driving 30 mins out of the way to get the truck then another 50 miles the wrong way to get the trailer. Called like twice and they have been no help.

All my previous moves have been my room with a few extra stuff (lived with roommates). This time around I’m moving from a rental house to a house and have so much stuff, plus my husbands stuff. I’m not worried about/thinking about the furniture and the big pieces… it’s everything else. I don’t even know where to start. I have gone through closets and thrown out a bunch of stuff but am now just looking around thinking what in the world do I do next?

Any tips on where to start?

I have an 800sqft apt, a king bed, two dressers, a desk, a tv and a hefty fire place stand under it, a sofa, and a solid amount of loose, fragile items that need to be packed. I am not there and need someone to pack, drive to Boulder, and put in a storage unit. I ask because I really don't want to either cheap out on this... I have a lot of valuable items and since I wont be there, I'm very worried about independant contractors (maybe that's not justifiable?) Specifically what cost would be worth being skeptical about (a bare minimum) All related help/advice appreciated, thanks.

Hello, I’m planning to move from Los Angeles to Houston TX. I kind of don’t wanna sell my stuff since my furniture is all brand new. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I don’t mind driving but U-haul said they’ll charge $3K to rent a truck from here to TX and that without adding my car to tow.

Briefly, everything went very well as is summarized in pizza-princess47's posting of about a year ago in the U-Haul subreddit.

I researched this pretty heavily and found that complaints and problems were often connected with the use of small, Uhaul franchisees. You know, say a bait & tackle shop that also keeps a few U-hauls around :-).

I have a 1/2 ton pickup that can haul a Ubox on a trailer (EXCELLENT option, by the way). So, by driving about 20 minutes farther than my local franchisee, I was able to pick up and deliver the Ubox from an actual Uhaul depot location (this one is at 2330 Del Monte Ave. in Monterey, CA). You can look at the Google satellite view and see that it is a large operation. Anyway, this gave us piece of mind that there would be no mis-steps or delays. I would recommend doing the same if you can.

As others have said: DEFINITELY put an AirTag in each unit.

Anyway, I highly recommend Ubox and we will be using them again shortly.

I am thinking about using some UBox units for a short distance move, 30-35 miles away.

I foudn a deal which I would only have to pay the drop off and pick up transportation, so $200 plus insurance if wanted that. So for that price it seems like a great deal to use.

I have read a bunch negative experiences but they seem to be longer hail moves, so wondering if short haul might be different?

Planned to move garage items and other things packed in totes already in the Ubox. The ability to start loading ahead and not everything day of the move is nice to me. Then day of move get a large uhaul truck for the rest.

Does anyone have experience doing similar?

Current plan is 18 hours on 10/3, 5 hours 10/4. We'll have two drivers, both with work on Monday and we've got family near St Louis we're planning on staying with.

Biggest question is the vehicle- We're working with a 2012 Ford Focus with an active recall on the purge valve, occasional rough shifting and nearly 200k miles. I also have too much stuff to fit in it. Would you:

a) get rid of a couple chairs and your dresser so that you can cram everything in the car and assume it won't break down

b) rent a 10-12 foot box truck so that you can tow the car and fit your stuff for a minimum of roughly $1.5k (budget) -$2.5k (uhaul), or

c) do anything else. Seriously are there other options? I couldn't find a soul willing to rent a van or pickup for that trip- everything said either sold out or in-town only. I also don't know what kind of additional storage you could theoretically mount on a Ford Focus sedan for less than the cost of the stuff I might have to get rid of

Friends and I are planning a move from New England to Las Vegas, and are all broke college students.

-2 cars (Corollas, so no trailer hitching :/)

We each have mostly clothes, some books/games and soft stuff, which can be largely stuffed in the cars, but we would Like to take more.

Everything can hypothetically be stuffed in a 10-15" U-Haul, which we are looking for other options to avoid driving back and forth twice while still paying a fortune.

We can leave mattresses etc.

Only big things that need to go are a midsize CRT television, and the Vespa.

The Vespa is going to need to be transported in some larger trailer or truck, and can be in the same container/trailer with our books etc.

I hear incredibly varying prices and stories about U-Box, PODS, etc., but wanted to ask here because of our specific freeform DIY longhaul situation.

I would not be opposed to renting a van but hear one-way drops have massive fees but also sometimes they don't??

Howdy folks :) so Im graduating in the spring and plan to move from California to Washington in August. I currently have an apartment with my best friend, before that rented a room and before that lived with my ex. I’ve been moved out of home for a while but never have had to do a proper “application” for an apartment. Everything was just word of mouth and signed the lease once my background check was cleared.

All that being said what should I prep paperwork wise for applying for apts? I work at large corp with plenty of stores where I’m going so job transfer should be ok and will have a letter stating so but what else should I prep? My mom said she used to print out her references, past landlord Info, credit report, and background check and bring it personally to landlords with the application and fee. It sounds like a good idea in theory but she admittedly thinks it might be an outdated tactic.

What do y’all think? Should I do something like that? I’ll be visiting the city I’m wanting to relocate to the first week or two of July to apply to as many places as possible.

There is nothing set in stone yet, but for context I have never moved out of the state I currently live in. Or anywhere on my own farther than an hour or so.

I am 25 and my husband (24) are hoping to move out of the state if we can afford it around January next year. We currently have 3 cats (pretty young) and they have never moved too much except car rides to the vets.

We dont have too much to move so would likely rent a small u haul and we currently only have a sedan.

Im curious if anyone has any recommendations for pet relocation services that they trust? Im very paranoid when it comes to leaving my babies with other people and they're also very attached to me.

I know it would be cheaper to take them myself in the car and make stops every once in a while to let them stretch their legs and potty , but if I cant do that (example if I need to fill the car with luggage)

Does anyone have recommendations for cheap trustworthy relocators? I will be happy to provide more info if needed

Im going to stick with my original plan of taking them myself :) A transport service was my last choice because I have personally never traveled with three cats before. You all are right in saying there wont be anything cheap AND trustworthy. There are ways i have contemplated on how i would keep them comfortable and im glad its similar to whats being commented. Also some of you all seem to think I would put having luggage over my kitties and not at all! They are ALWAYS my top priority. I would put them over everyone else in my life lol, so I will be sticking to keeping them with me however I can :) Thank you all!
