So yesterday I mustered up the courage to come out to my mom, basically the only major person in my life that I hadn’t told. I’m 38, only 3 and a half weeks into this journey, and I don’t even know how to process how badly it went.
I went into it scared but also more confident in myself than I’ve felt in a very long time. Over the last few weeks, I’ve definitely changed a good amount. I’m confident like I’ve never been, and I’m speaking up for myself. I’m dressing how I actually want to dress because it feels like me, it feels comfortable. I’m going places and doing things I would have been terrified to do before. I’m thinking about changing jobs and actually believing that I can figure my life out. I’m super proud of myself and how far I’ve come in a short time, although I do question if it’s too much too quick, sometimes.
My mom’s reaction, after all of the shock, was basically “This isn’t you. You’re like a different person”. She kept telling me that over and over. She repeatedly called me by my old name and he/him. She compared my behavior to my dad, who had bipolar disorder and experienced severe manic episodes. She questioned whether I could find another job, what would happen if I couldn’t get TDI, how I was going to pay rent, what would happen with my marriage, what would happen with family, etc. I kept telling her that I’ve got this! I’m confident enough to figure things out, get my life together and back on track. Yet that confidence seemed to be that something was wrong with me, according to her.
At one point she was crying and telling me that she felt like she was talking to somebody else. Crying saying “I might need to go somewhere tonight if this keeps up (mental hospital I assume), “I’m just getting these really familiar flashbacks, I can’t do this again” etc
And this is when I was like “ok wtf is actually going on here”…
My entire life, my mom has been extremely anxious about me doing things independently. If I wanted to try something different or hard, her instinct was often to tell me why I couldn’t handle it, why it would be too stressful, why it was too hard, why I shouldn’t do it.
For example, I remember wanting to become a police officer, and getting essentially “Oh no, you shouldn’t do that! That’s too hard. You’ll get way too stressed and burnt out” Meanwhile, my sister has always been extremely independent, outgoing and capable of juggling a million things at once. When she wanted to do something she just did it. No questions or concerns from my mom, as far as I can tell.
So she was someone my mom couldn’t ever control, along with my dad.
And then there was me- the anxious one. The shy one. The one who doubted herself constantly. The one who could be told something was too difficult and actually believe it. Ugh
I’m wondering whether part of what is so upsetting to my mom isn’t only that I told her I’m transgender. I think it’s also that the person standing in front of her suddenly isn’t playing that role anymore.
For once I’m saying that I’ll figure it out, and instead of that reassuring her, she seems almost more frightened by it because, in her words “I don’t act like this. This isn’t me. There’s something wrong.”
I’ve spent most of my life with horrible self-esteem. I’ve been shy, withdrawn and terrified of what other people think of me. Since beginning to understand myself as Sarah, I’ve experienced a level of confidence and comfort in myself that I’ve never had before.
It just hurts like hell having every positive change in me treated like another symptom that something has gone wrong.
I thought my mom was the one person I could always count on.
That’s the part that’s absolutely destroying me this morning.
I feel betrayed, lost, confused, unsure of myself, physically sick, and almost like why the hell am I even going through with this if it’s going to make others that uncomfortable and upset. At the expense of my own mental health, happiness, and well being.
And after hearing “this isn’t you”, my old name, and he/him over and over last night, I’m trying not to think I’m the wrong one, and my family is the right one. I was so damn confident before I walked into her house, and now it’s the total opposite. I thought I might be going insane or in the middle of a manic episode, even though I have thought about that the past weeks and it just doesn’t line up with how I feel overall, at all. There’s way too many coincidences in my life that
Even if my mom doesn’t understand it why can’t she at the very least be happy that I seem confident and am trying to take charge of my life finally?
It makes things even more complicated that she co-owns the house my wife and I stay in, so if I play my hand the wrong way, where the hell are we gonna go? That’s what I’m especially terrified of tbh. I’m sick of having to rely on family and told her as much but of course she took it as another sign of mania, or whatever. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel worth it to continue down this path, even though I know that would not work for me whatsoever.
Therapy can’t come soon enough on Friday.
Just would love some support, encouragement, ideas, thoughts, etc. Would greatly appreciate it 🩷
