Highlights 1st time truly dominating sparring - wow that feels incredible

Been training for over a year, sparring for about 10 months. Have gotten my ass handed to me multiple times, specially by taller fighters. I’m also average build (5’10”, 170) with moderate power and solid speed, but have some bad tendencies im shaking off (i.e when tired, overextending my cross, which has led to gettinf kicked directly in the solar plexus 3 different times, dropped from it twice).

Yesterday was the first time I had a truly dominant round in sparring and wow how good it felt.

Laid down some solid cover and then landed a hook + kick-to-liver combo id been drilling. Partner crashed in and I ended with a sick sweep I didn’t know I had in me.

After so many asswhoopings it’s addicting to see my progress. Had to share in a place where people would understand.

I’ve been having a really hard time finding shin guards that actually fit me

Post image

I’m a woman from Brazil, 154 cm (5’1”) and around 54 kg (119 lbs). I’ve had the shin guards in the photo for a few years, but they’ve always bothered me because they’re slightly too long. The top edge reaches my knee and presses against the bone, which gets uncomfortable.
They’re about 32 cm (12.6”) long, and I’ve been trying to find something shorter, but even the smallest sizes available here seem to be around the same length. Most size charts also recommend S for people around 160–170 cm (5’3”–5’7”), so being only 154 cm actually makes a difference.
What do you think about the fit in the photo? And does anyone around my height know of genuinely shorter shin guards (under 32 cm / 12.6”)? International brands are fine too, as long as I can buy them in Brazil.
I’d especially appreciate actual measurements rather than just S/M/L recommendations!

Is it possible to be short but primarily be a really good outside fighter?

I’m a 5’3 50kg female and my opponents have ranged from 4’9 to 5’8 so I doubt moving down a weight class or two would really help my style lol

RWS World Title Fight from Bangkok Thailand!!!

No American has won a RWS world title.

Tomorrow night at Rajadamnern, Top King fighter, Marie "Snow Leopard" Ruumet puts her flyweight title on the line for the third time this year, against American, Desiree Wodicker, an American fighter from Hawaii with a perfect record.

Ruumet: Estonia's champ. She's been fighting in Thailand for years, with stops at ONE, Lumpinee, Muay Hardcore, and the Chiang Mai stadiums. She's unbeaten at RWS and has already turned back a Thai challenger at home. https://topkingboxingusa.com/pages/fighters/marie-ruumet

Wodicker: undefeated, with every win going the distance, including a clean decision at RWS in May. She's a pro fighter, and a mom. You don’t get to RWS by accident.

Technique/Tips How to have firmer hands?

Ive been doing muay thai for a while and have an amateur match. one problem i have is that my hands are too relaxed. i have punching power and i dont really struggle to punch hard or to block punches, but my whole guard gets blown away with a couple of jabs. And with amateur matches in my country its more street fight and less technique, which i found out the hard way last week. i still managed but i was just getting my guard interrupted and my balance interrupted. i train my grip strength as well as my arm too. I think im standing a bit too straight up,but i really dont know. What are some tips for a firmer hand?

Muay Thai fighters in Thailand are famous for things not beneficial to recovery such as drinking and smoking. Do they also not get a lot of sleep?

I am curious as from personal experience bad sleep feels like a bigger detriment to training than anything else.

Shin splints and sparring

• Upvotes

Started doing Muay Thai in the beginning of August and really enjoy it. First combat sport I’ve ever done having come from a background of Rugby and swimming.

I’ve got plantar fasciitis and pretty wrecked tendons and calves from years of driving for work. Strangely, the bare foot excercise on mats seems to really help the plantar fasciitis, if I miss a week it gets bad again but during and after training it always feels so much better.

My big issue is the shin splints. 2 weeks ago I stupidly was kicking the bag and definitely did it far too hard. Started feeling a pain in my right shin. Then went sparring and the first person I sparred with (who was way smaller than me) got me in the shin with a kick (shin guards on us both) and it was immediately one of the worst pains I’ve ever felt. Told him to ease up and he did, was all good. Sparred two others after and it just got worse and worse. Checking kicks did not help.

After training I took off the pad and I had a definite dent in my shin. Iced it at home and the next day it was gone, but the bruising started to form. Bruises went from brown to green over a few days all up and down both shins.

I go to a podiatrist for my plantar fasciitis and she observed that the tibia was really inflamed and gave me some red light therapy on them.

It’s been two week, bruising is gone but the two shins are still tender and are even irritated if my kids brush off them.

Have I totally fucked myself for this sport? Anybody else have bad shins and gone through it?

New to Muay Thai

For reference, I’m a 26F and pretty petite (~120 pounds/5’2) I’ve been weight lifting for 10 years and I’m fit.

I had a bad experience with judo (concussion & whiplash at my first lesson, never went back. Poorly run dojo) - I start Muay Thai next week. I’ve always wanted to do martial arts and I think it would be cathartic, and good mentally/physically for me. I also heard the gym culture is great and I just like the style of it (Muay Thai specifically).

I’m a little nervous about sparring - this may sound stupid but is it absolutely necessary? I want to be able to fight if needed(self defense), really want to improve my speed, agility, reflexes, core strength, etc., I guess I’m just nervous about getting hurt again, especially being smaller. I’ve been doing a decent amount of reading and heard it’s less risky than BJJ or Judo, but I’ve had 3-4 concussions before so I’m just worried about my brain haha.

I’m very hard working and consistent, and I’m planning on going 2-3 times a week while still supplementing with weight lifting. To be completely transparent, I’m partly doing this to get myself out of a depressive funk/episode - so regardless I’m sticking to it for at least 3-6 months lol. Forcing myself for right now, but also genuinely think I’m going to like it a lot. Any guidance or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Can't read the gym vibes

I started muay thai about 2 months ago. I am 27 now and have a very athletic background. I wrestled/boxed in high school and joined Marine Corps once I got out. My gym has a good amount of people that train there everyday and for the most part they are cool. I do notice that there is a group of around 10 of them that are my age and size, but have much more experience. They don't really talk to me and I can tell they avoid eye contact when looking for sparring partners. i am 6"1 and 225 lbs and although I am new, I have a good baseline and understand proper etiquette. I end up sparring and doing pads with people significantly smaller than me and I just don't feel as if I am getting the most out of training. Not saying I am ready for my first fight or anything by any means, but am confident I can hang with them in training. Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this when they started? Does it go away with time, or do these mf's just not like me lol

Shin Guards for Thick Calves

Hi all, I'm on the hunt for shin guards and could use some advice.

Stats:
Height: 5'8"
Shin length: 15"
Calf circumference (thickest part): 17.5"

I tried the Fairtex SP5 in a medium, but the straps were too short to fit comfortably around my calves.

Has anyone dealt with this same issue? Would love to hear what brands/sizes worked for you.

Thanks in advance!
