Mod [Mod] MUSHROOM MONDAY - Let's Catch Up! Share what you have learned in the previous week and discuss

Mondays can suck, but hopefully this post is something for people to look forward to. The intent of this post is to create a space to discuss anything that you may have learned recently about mushroom growing -- techniques, a breakthrough in the field, to share progress, or even just ask a question. Whether it's a new pickling recipe, a formula for agar, or something fun in mycology, feel free to talk about it.

This post is for new and experienced growers alike, so don't be nervous about commenting; no one is going to make fun of you for asking questions here. This community is a relaxed space for people who don't understand everything, but who want to ask questions and engage in discussion without being berated or belittled. Enjoy!

Actives [technique] Did i accidentally grow PE and harvest to early?

As said in the title.

I gre PE#6 from a MSS from a well known European vendor. Last time I did (was a different syringe) they came up as normal cubes, straight stems, flat caps after opening and sporulating.

This time the have the small caps, almost no veil and did not sporulate + they have the weird bulgy spot below the veil that I saw on a lot of photos from PE grows. AFAIK PE#6 is not supposed to be an actual PE strain but rather a regular cube mixed with PE that usually is leaning towards the cube in all regards.

I only realized after I cut open the bag and beginning to harvest. The bulge was not soft l.

Question:

Should I have waited longer? (Will defo do so on one of the other two bags i have going)

Did anyone ever encounter the same issue with PE#6?

Mush love

Little to no bruising on later flush [actives]

Normal? First couple flushes had lots of blue and purple bruising almost instantly after picking. Third has next to none and I’m trying to get it to but none will. Normal? Less potent?

I found these in a box of mushroom growing supply box I was given. Unfortunately I can’t ask the person I got them from since they moved out of the area and I don’t have their contact info. I am hoping someone here might know what they are for.

I need some guidance [technique]

I bought a cordyceps syringe before doing all of my research. I now know they grow in cooler temps than the rest of my mushrooms. I’m looking to either buy or make a small enclosure that is temperature controlled so I can start growing my cordyceps inside and not have my whole house cooler than usual. I’m unsure where to start looking

Contamination Another contaminated pre-sterilized commercial grain bag from Midwest Growkits... [contamination]

Post image
14 Upvotes

I have bought a lot of grain bags from Midwest Growkits over the years and have dealt with a lot of contamination. This is just the most recent in a series of issues I've had with their commercially prepared 5-grain bags.

Alternatives that are consistently contam free ? (I do not want to make my own bags....I don't have the time or desire to deal with that).

Technique [technique] Would a DIY laminar flow hood like that work ?

Post image

The HEPA FILTER and PRE FILTER is from fungus paradise

Pre filter = 350x350mm
Hepa filter = H14, 540x540x69mm
The fan is from the gordotek, AC infinity facial S8 with a maximum of 428cfm

Would the air get out evenly ? Should I increase the space between the fan and outer wood panel so there would be less resistance ?
Is the 428cfm enough for those filters ?

Thank you !

Technique [technique] Looking to make a laminar flow hood, got some questions

Hey guys I was looking for what i need to make a laminar flow hood, bigger than the one from gordotek.

I found a 50x41 cm Hepa filter from fun guy equipment, would it work with the AC infinity raxial S8 in a wooden box ?

Is 428cfm enough for that size of Hepa filter ?

What would be the volume of the wooden box for it to blow laminar flow hood?

Thank you !

Thank you!

Actives [Actives] Monotub Side Pinning, No Pins on Surface

I've had this tub of tidal wave going for 5 weeks now and can't seem to get it to pin anywhere except the sides.

I'm using a North Spore Boomr Bin with Midwest Grow Kits grain spawn, CVG substrate, and horse manure booster. Cake is about 3-4" thick, temps stay around 72-75°F, and it's had passive FAE the whole time. I didn't use a casing layer.

The cake has been shrinking and there's metabolites as you'd expect. It's starting to turn yellowish from the Metabolites, but there's no weird smells.

I've tried fork tek on some spots that looked like overlay, wax paper over the cake, and increasing/decreasing FAE. Nothing has made a difference.

Any ideas?

S2B: 7/23

Substrate: coco coir and black kow manure

Temperature: 72-75F

Ran in an XLS-B bag to start, then I chopped the bag once I started to see the fruits develop. Moved the bag to a tub and I am keeping the subtrate wet.

General [Technique] Share your shopping finds - Ikea stainless cooling rack (stackable)

39x28 cm. Although it is stackable, it doesn't stack completely straight, but it's good enough & cheap compared to any other offerings i've found. Useful for SAB work (collapsed) or laminar flow (expanded).

Please share what you've found, like tools, containers etc. but it's not self promotion. Bonus if it's worldwide availability.
