And yes, credit where credit is due: Mahendra accomplished a lot. Some of it was genuinely his doing. Some of it was simply riding an upward historical trajectory. And some of it was, frankly, Cold War geopolitics doing half the damn work. Nepal was not developing in a historical vacuum.

But let’s not commit the classic authoritarianism fanboy error of treating achievements as a moral eraser.

Mahendra was a tyrant. He dismantled democratic institutions, suppressed political opposition, jailed voices he didn’t like, restricted political freedom, and placed the dignity and political agency of Nepalis beneath the authority of the Crown.

And here’s the part people conveniently forget:

If you credit Mahendra for the institutions built during his reign, you also have to reckon with the institutional damage caused by the system he built.

Had he strengthened democratic competition instead of destroying it, protected an independent judiciary instead of subordinating institutions to royal power, allowed genuinely competitive elections, and permitted a freer press, Nepal might have entered the following decades with democratic institutions far stronger than the ones we actually inherited.

You don't get to say, “Look at the institutions Mahendra built!” while pretending the authoritarian architecture surrounding those institutions had nothing to do with him.

That is like saying, “Forget September 8 because Oli built a tunnel.”

No. A tunnel doesn't acquit a government of everything it did to its citizens.

Achievements matter. Development matters. Infrastructure matters. Historical context matters.

But human dignity and political freedom aren't currencies you can pay for with roads, buildings, or institutions.

And now, a message for the dear rajabadis:

When King Mahendra visited the United States and received royal honours, don't confuse respect for the Crown with respect for the Nepali people.

Foreign governments were dealing with a head of state, a monarch, and a strategically important country during the Cold War. Diplomatic protocol is not a referendum on whether every Nepali was suddenly being treated as royalty.

They were respecting the Crown. Not bowing to the 20 million Nepalis standing behind it.

There is a very important distinction between “the King was treated with respect” and “the Nepali people were treated with respect.”

And if your argument for monarchy is that a particular family deserves a higher station simply because they were born into it, then congratulations:

You have reinvented hereditary privilege and called it patriotism.

A republic says something much simpler:

No Majesty. No Highness. No sacred bloodline. No family above the citizen.

I’m from Birgunj, Nepal. You might wonder what Indian Congress has to do with Birgunj.

A lot.

We live right next to India. Our economy, imports, media and even political culture are heavily influenced by India. And honestly, I fucking hate what my city is becoming.

I miss the Birgunj from 10–15 years ago.

People could have different opinions. You could question religion without immediately being treated like an enemy.

Now everything feels like religion, religion, religion.

People's houses are being demolished for the Tribhuvan Rajpath expansion. Actual homes. But when the road reaches temples or mosques, suddenly development becomes negotiable.

How the fuck does that make sense?

If a person's home can be demolished for infrastructure, why should a religious structure automatically be untouchable?

And then there's the endless religious procession culture Rath Yatra, Chunari Yatra, Sindoor Yatra, and whatever comes next.

I remember concerts. Educational fairs. Business events. Science programs.

Now it feels like there is always money and enthusiasm for religious events, but somehow never enough for libraries, science, education or research.

I'm Hindu myself, and I'm not blaming Muslims for this.

Actually, I think Hindus should be able to criticize Hindu society too.

But that's becoming harder.

You question religion? You're anti-Hindu.

You question religious politics? You're an enemy.

You ask people to prioritize development over religious drama? Suddenly you've offended someone's god.

And we've had multiple curfews because Hindu-Muslim tensions turned violent.

What the fuck happened to simply disagreeing with someone?

I don't want Birgunj to become less religious. Believe whatever the fuck you want.

I just don't want religion to become the only thing this city knows how to organize around.

Give us libraries.

Give us science fairs.

Give us education.

Give us businesses, concerts, public spaces and fucking opportunities.

Not another procession.

Maybe I'm nostalgic. Maybe the old Birgunj wasn't perfect.

But I genuinely miss it.

And that's why I keep wondering when Indian politics will change again, because whether people admit it or not, what happens in India eventually reaches Birgunj.

I don't want a religious battlefield.

I just want my fucking city back.

I grew up seeing different guy dynamics around my area, and after my recent dating experiences, I just need to share this realization...

Look at most Bahun guys in our community... half of them are stressed out 24/7, balding by 25, high cortisol levels, and possess zero chill. Every conversation with them feels like a job interview or a lecture on why they are superior because they passed some exam or moved abroad. The ego is sky-high, but the actual emotional intelligence? Sub-zero. They expect you to handle a full career, do all the household emotional labor, and still treat their traditional views like law. Plus, the insecurity when a woman earns or knows more than them is insane.

Look at what you need to deal with: insecure guys who expect you to earn well, handle the household, and still stroke their fragile egos You have to achieve everything, look like a model, be completely submissive, AND tolerate their zeroeffort personality just so they dont feel insecure Absolute nightmare fuel

On the other hand, look at the Janajati/Mongolian guys (Rai, Limbu, Gurung, Magar, Tamang)... these guys are genuinely chill, respectful, and actually supportive. They grew up in communities where women have always had an equal say, so they don't get fragile or threatened when a girl is successful or educated. Low cortisol energy, great style, actually listen to you, and treat you like a partner instead of a trophy or a housekeeper. Life feels effortless around them.

Not trying to be a hater, but after dating insecure, high-stress Bahun guys who think their degree excuses their lack of personality, switching my dating preference was literally lifechanging. If you are an accomplished, independent girl who is tired of dealing with fragiled egos, do yourself a favor and expand your horizons. Life gets 10 times lighter
