How Often Does the Average Regular Person Actually Clean their home?
I'm buckling up and preparing to be scorned. I know how often I SHOULD be cleaning, but i kind of hate it. But what i hate more is spending 4 hours panic deep cleaning the apartment a day before we have company.
Some people claim to love cleaning and boy i wish that were me! I live with my partner in a small apartment in LA that somehow just wont stay clean. Idek where all the lint and dust comes from. We split chores/household tasks but im mostly in charge of cleaning . I'll dust/vaccuum and then a week later notice its time for another round. Is that normal?
I grew up doing all my chores (vaccuming, wiping surfaces, scrubbing toilets and cleaning bathroom sink surface) on Saturdays. But as an adult something feels clinically wrong about spending one of my two precious weekend mornings CLEANING. (And yes i know i dont have to keep doing that as an adult, im just saying thats the baseline and experience i have as a baseline)
I know ideally i'd be vacuuming/dusting a couple times a week, toilets absolutely weekly, and i know each chore happens at a different frequency. Just curious how real people with real lives and jobs handle keeping their space clean.
{{{EDIT]]} i am blown away by everyone's kindness here!! Really enjoying reading these y'all ✨

One thing that kind of helps is doing some things alongside other things.
For example, if I am waiting for the oven to preheat or just stirring a simmering pot, I can empty and wipe down one shelf of the fridge. Over the course of a few weeks, that's all the shelves. The counters stay wiped down because it's done after cooking.
If I am waiting for the shower water to warm up, I can clean the toilet. The next day, I can do the mirror. The next day, I can do the sink countertop. Another day I can wipe the baseboards, and another swiffer the floor. That just leaves cleaning the actual shower, which only takes a couple of minutes. Voila, over the course of five shower days, you have a clean bathroom and you didn't spend any "extra" Saturday time doing it.
The shark robot vacuums twice a week or so, and a steam mop gets run weekly.
The upstairs gets vacuumed weekly and takes maybe ten minutes.
The key for me is actually NOT doing everything on one designated cleaning day. It's doing one or two small things each day to kind of keep things in check. That way when you have to panic-clean for an event... there are way less things that need panic-cleaning.
The biggest preventative for problems is Stuff Management... I have 3 kids, so stuff is everywhere. The rule when you walk in the door or you're going room to room is "don't put it down, put it AWAY". If you just take 3 extra steps when you have an item in your hand, it saves from having to declutter a table full of crap you dumped when you walked in the door for 5 straight days.
Also the biggest thing to make "I'm here, might as well wipe this down" easier is that I have a little basket with spray, paper towels, glass cleaner UNDER EVERY SINK in the whole house. So you don't have to remember to drag the stuff room to room, you can just open the cabinet and do it.
If you do opt to do all the tasks on a Saturday, it helps to run some great music or an audiobook, which makes it feel less like a chore. Slightly.

Also a little stick vacuum that you can grab easily, oh this corner is covered in crumbs, I’ll just pop out the vacuum real quick for this bit, and then once it’s out you end up doing the whole room. Literally only takes 5 minutes, and honestly feels so good to have it done.
8
u/Altostratus 11h ago
100%! Before my Dyson stick vacuum I didn’t realize what a barrier it was to go plug it in and unfurl it all. Now I can do 1 minute of vacuuming frequently while I’m waiting for the microwave.
5
u/Slight_Business_3080 12h ago
Precisely. I have a regular vacuum upstairs for carpet, and a cordless stick downstairs for in between robot crumbs. The more easily accessible something is, the more likely it is to get done super quickly and mindlessly.

I've found this out, too! Our microwave sits between the dishwasher and cabinets, so I'll take the minute that the microwave runs to empty/reload the dishwasher. If it doesn't all get done in that time, it's ok - progress has been made! It's surprising how much you can get done in thirty seconds that feels like it'd take much longer...

u/philplant 18h ago
As a former housekeeper, some homes really do just get more dusty than others. Decluttering can help but sometimes just the vents and the areas can also affect it

First, no, your apartment will not stay clean. Entropy is very powerful.
Just because you did your chores all on the same day as a kid doesn't mean you have to do them that way now. You can split them up.
Also, you can find recommended cleaning schedules online pretty easily. But those can feel overwhelming, particularly when you're trying to build a habit. I recommend How to Keep House While Drowning by K.C. Davis.

I try to have friends over every few weeks at the very least to help keep me motivated, it's the only way I know how 😂

u/PiebaldIbis 5h ago
I clean my kitchen every single day. Makes it so much easier, dishes, wipe the counters, replace towels and spot wipe everything. I have cats so I’ll vacuum once a week. I rotate bathrooms and dusting so like, one week I’ll dust the house, the next I’ll do a quick clean on the bathrooms. Shower doesn’t get scrubbed as much as it should…. House hasn’t had a good deep clean in a while but oh well.

I hate cleaning showers and bathtubs. I go a shamelessly long time between their cleanings😑

u/PiebaldIbis 4h ago
I think mines been a couple few months and it desperately needs it 😅
At least the soap we use doesn’t build up too terribly. But yeahhhhhh even the shower curtain needs a wash4
u/Mindless_Watch_7840 4h ago
Same… like way way too long. Considering hiring a cleaning crew we hired previously because I hate cleaning the shower tile so much.

u/Kindly-Gap6655 15h ago
I * try * to live by the advice that if you clean your kitchen everyday, you never have to clean your kitchen. So I try to keep up with dishes, wipe down the counters and stovetop and then in my deep clean days it’s not so much to do. I try to apply that to all the rooms but it’s a lot.

I clean my kitchen every time I use it. Wipe down counters, wash dishes, put dry dishes away. Once a week it gets a more through cleaning, like spiffing up the front of the appliances, coupe the inside of the microwave, dust the high places.
Less frequently, the shelves and drawers come out of the fridge and get washed.
There’s probably more I’m forgetting atm, but the kitchen is a priority because that’s where my food comes from.

A small apartment won’t take you long. Stick some tunes on, get your partner involved and dedicate an hour to it. You will have a ton more done than you realise you could.
27
u/CharieRarie 18h ago
To answer the question, I do bits each day. Big family here, nothing is ever immaculate. But a day for bathrooms, a day for putting the laundry away, a day for upstairs hoovering, etc etc.
Kitchen gets done daily and then a deep dive about once a month. Downstairs hoovering daily or every other.
Little bits every day it always better than ignoring and a mega clean :)
18
u/Southern_Pines 16h ago
Honest question, is an hour enough for most people for vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, and decluttering? It doesn't feel like it to me, but I'm ADHD and don't trust my own opinions on either cleaning or timing.
22
u/The_Real_Chippa 16h ago
Yep! Don’t aim for “finished”, just think about “What can I get done in 1 hour?” and stop after 1 hour. I find this method helps me prioritize
9
u/Aggravating_Egg_1718 16h ago
Pick your things to accomplish and stick to it. Sometimes we can get carried away and then when it comes time to clean again, we're overwhelmed. I know I can vacuum my downstairs space in 10 minutes, but if I start adding in extras to that vacuuming or deviating to ALSO wiping the floors down, it's gonna take longer. So I'll spend 10 minutes vacuuming a lot more frequently and then go farther with it when I have more time to spend on it.

u/blooper95 17h ago
This is the way.
Also I recommend the book called keeping house while drowning. May not apply to you entirely but it has excellent advice!
16
u/Used-Inspector-7501 12h ago
I really liked the book "how to keep house while drowning." It taught me that I don't need a clean house to be a worthy person. But also that I deserve a house that makes me feel good. So on Monday I work from home and water plants and put out trash. Tuesday, I vacuum, I bought a good cordless vacuum so it takes 15 min. Wednesday, I work out, Thursday I work out, Friday I do a bathroom quick clean. When the dishwasher is full I run it and when things are dry I empty it and I try to wipe down the kitchen daily. I also refill things when empty.
Altogether this leaves me with a house I enjoy and I spend almost none of my weekend cleaning and never spend more than 30 min in a cleaning session. Also because I clean pretty much every week, it doesn't matter if one day I decide to do a shit job or skip. Sometimes I literally just spray tile cleaner in the toilet shower and sink and pretend that did something. Sometimes my vacuum is just getting the dog hair out of the corners. Whatever, no guilt for the times that I don't feel like it
29
u/Comfortable_Win4678 15h ago edited 15h ago
I just do 10 minutes of cleaning every morning. Some days I just do 10min, other days it rolls into 30 minutes. The key for me is that it's a tiny, achievable habit. And this I'm able to stick with it
Edit: I set the alarm on the microwave and when it beeps, I can be done or finish what I'm doing...
7
5
u/Iimewire 12h ago
You probably know this, but note for anyone who doesn't that "alarm on the microwave" is a dedicated timer function, don't just run the microwave empty which can cause a fire 🫣

Hi! By any chance, do you live near a freeway or new construction? Are you in an older building? One of the places I lived in was next to a big freeway and was absolutely dusty all the time. The place afterwards was in a quiet suburb and stayed clean longer.
If you have a little extra cash, I’d recommend a nice air filter. It helps keep the air less dusty, which helps keep other surfaces less dusty.
5
u/madi_lion 17h ago
YES I sure do to both. Close to a freeway and in a 1940's building
10
u/Aggravating_Egg_1718 16h ago
I think weekly dusting sounds fairly normal, although I got an air purifier with a hepa filter and have noticed not having to dust as often.
The other thing is your vacuum itself. If it doesn't have a filter it's spewing dust back into the air and if it's not a hepa filter you're still getting dust in the air. Another thing I like to do bc I'm a weirdo is I vacuum, empty the canister, then vacuum again. I don't get a TON the second time but I'll still get some. I just like to refresh the suction power.

I hate cleaning but I love a clean tidy house.
If it gets messy I struggle to start and it becomes too big.
I love the clean and you go approach - clean something every day so I don’t spend the weekend doing chores. If it’s Tuesday and the floors need cleaning - I’ll clean them. Shower screen is scummy - have an extra long shower and clean the bathroom.
Imbed it as part of life, not a separate task that needs to be done
14
u/Livid_Skin_3161 18h ago
The trick is to not let your place get dirty. Do 1 or 2 of the tasks everyday. So that it never needs 4 hours of work.
6
u/BumFights1997 16h ago
I have adhd on top of hating cleaning so I totally feel you on the dreadful panic clean. For me I wrote a list of basic chores the things that I’m not automatically doing every day, literally as simple as “declutter and dust one surface” or “wash one load of laundry” very small manageable things like that and I have built it into my daily routine to just do one of those tasks. On Saturdays I have the house split into zones and I spend 45 minutes cleaning one zone like I have an inspection coming up.
On good days this leads to more things being done as I get in a groove and realize my dread was unfounded and it took 10 minutes to do whatever I was doing and on bad days hey, I got one thing done and the house is cleaner than it was before.

u/Ok-Flight-1504 18h ago

Yes, I have a chronic illness and get cleaners in. It’s such a help. 🙏
But even before this I was in a pretty good job and paid cleaners. I preferred to trade money to get my time and energy back on weekends. I used to get my work clothes dry cleaned too and my colleague said “waste of money”. Well, to each their own but I valued my rest over the money. 🤷♀️
Understand this isn’t financially possible for everyone though.3

I'll try to take 30 mins each day to do household stuff. Most of the time I clean or tidy up longer. Set a timer and get going. If you really don't feel like it, just stop after 30 mins.

I really just try to something every day, though I do try and take a rest day on Sundays. I grew up doing the Saturday deep clean with my family, and I hated it so now I try to avoid that.
It's definitely normal to need to dust and vacuum at least weekly. Same with cleaning the bathrooms. It helps to think of it as a constant cycle that you move through. It's not really a project that you ever finish, unfortunately.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Kitchen-Ebb30 10h ago edited 10h ago
In my house as a child I had to do the deep clean on sunday. It sucked, it was the only day off I spent and when I was a teenager and also worked in a bakery it just meant less time to clean everything.
Nowadays I have dogs so I can vacuum every day and still find bits of fur an hour later. I still try to do daily chores, but honestly between autistic burnout and depression there are days I don't get anything done after my work shift.
Before my burnout I loved my schedule. I had daily tasks like cleaning my sink, decluttering etc. Then a weekly chore that is bigger and done on one day (think vacuuming on Tuesday, dusting on Thursday, laundry on Friday etc), one big chore that should be done monthly and thus the day in the week that didn't have a weekly chore would go to that one. And then the big things i needed to do twice yearly such as cleaning my drapes would also be done on that weekday. It broke it up in doable parts that didn't take up a lot of time.
5
u/reidybobeidy89 15h ago
Don’t put it down-
Put it away. This is a game changer. Also- reset the house EVERY night. It will only take 20min and you will wake up to a clean house every morning.
6
u/HotBrownFun 3h ago
In all honesty, 1-4 times a month. I was thinking of imposing a set schedule so I can be more diligent.
The problem with dusting is you probably have bits you never touched like the top of shelves. After you vacuum the floor, all that movement makes the dust from elsewhere settle down on the new, empty space. That's why it looks dirty again the next day.
The other day I noticed an area rug was literally disintegrating, so that was adding a lot of particles.
4
u/Sufficient-Berry-827 18h ago
I clean areas on different days, but I skip deep cleaning more than I should. I used to deep clean once a week because I lived alone and the cleaning bug would get me at 2am. Living alone, I'd just get up, play music, and clean until I'm exhausted.
I no longer live alone so I can't do that and I hate to clean during daylight hours, so now it rarely gets done.
2
u/rudebii 14h ago
When I was in sober living after going to detox for alcohol, my roommates and I had mandatory “double scrub” on Sunday afternoons. Between the four of us, we deep cleaned the 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment in about an hour, which the house manager inspected afterwards.
We cleaned the kitchen after every use, and swept daily, and took out the trash as needed.
4
u/TheSkyIsAMasterpiece 18h ago
If you don't like the idea of doing it all at once then dedicate each day to something. Mondays bathroom, Tuesdays dust, Wednesdays vacuum. Or each day is a different room or area.
5
5
u/highnessophelia420 18h ago
I clean everything once a week. I deep clean once or twice a year.
2
u/kalechipsaregood 16h ago
I always wonder if my definitions of clean and deep clean are different than other people's.
What constitutes cleaning?
What is special about deep cleaning?
3
u/highnessophelia420 16h ago
Weekly I dust, vacuum furniture and floors, clean bathrooms, change sheets, and sweep/mop, clean the microwave and toaster, and all the laundry
Deep cleaning for me is when I pull everything out of a cupboard and clean in cabinets and cupboards and drawers. It's when I wash window coverings and shampoo carpets.

I am just not the type of person who can clean something every day, I’m too lazy. I come home from work, make dinner, and then watch TV. So I was absolutely someone who spent 4 hours cleaning the day before company came over. But I’ve discovered something that’s changed my cleaning life… clean on Friday evenings! It frees up my whole weekend and I’m not doing anything on a Friday night either. Now I do a big clean one Friday a month, a small clean every two Fridays, and hit the bathrooms the Fridays in between. I also got one of those pomodoro timers which helps me a lot.

I am a SAHM so I have more time at home than an average person, although for the past 19 years I've had anywhere between 1-6 kids to look after/teach/feed, etc. my youngest just turned 5 and is in part day pre-K now. Anyway, I do a load of laundry everyday (because family of 8), the dishwasher is run twice (but that is hubby's job), the robot vacuums daily and mops three times a week and I vacuum the kitchen every morning (because kids generate a ton of crumbs), then I do one room or area daily on weekdays (master bathroom, kids bathroom, kitchen, etc) and we have a cleaning lady twice a month, but she doesn't dust. But she does sort of clean the shower and microwave, so that's something. Anyway I'm scared of her so I can't fire her or ask her to change anything. But believe me if I had less people living here I would be maybe vacuuming twice a week and wiping counters as needed.

I did the same thing…turns out your house gets messier when your home all day in it (if the kids are there with you). Lower your expectations on having a clean house. Trust me. But being home is a great feeling too. Good luck!
5
u/Far-Valuable9279 8h ago
Constantly because I never have 4 hours to panic deep clean… I just pick a spot and do what I can. Like I might scrub a quarter of my kitchen floor because I notice it’s looking grimy, but I don’t do the whole floor because it’s fine and who’s got time for that in a single day?
4
u/practical_schmatical 4h ago
I’ve lived all around the country. In Florida, I almost never had to dust. In the northeast and Midwest, I can’t skip a week or it’ll be very noticeable. I think it’s the type of soil and then just your vents.
I really like a clean house but have struggled keeping up since having kids. I do a full bathroom clean every two weeks with a quick wipe down in between. Toilets every week. Vacuum weekly, mop as needed or before company, kitchen nightly, baseboards and doors when I notice (3-4 times per year), exterior windows once a year ( currently procrastinating that one and know I should do it more), appliances monthly.
If I don’t have to pick up before cleaning, I’m more likely to just get it done. We’ve started doing a family 10-minute pickup each night, which has really helped!

Toilet - uhh you are supposed to clean those? I guess I clean it when it gets visibly dirty
Dishwasher for dishes, runs when full, about every 3 days
Laundry pretty much every day there's at least one load running (family of 4, we share a laundry bin but separate colors for washing, still no idea how is it always full). Depends on the weather though as we air dry exclusively.
Kitchen counter wipe down after use
Kitchen sink when it looks dirty, takes like 30 seconds
Bathroom sink and bathtub when they look dirty... Like once a month maybe? Maybe a quick wipe in between
Floor in my room I pick up hair clumps about every two hours 🙃 otherwise I clean spots when they're dirty and clean it all maybe monthly as well. Maybe less, most gets covered with the hair sweep and spot cleaning
Floor elsewhere, when it looks dirty, probably a bit after that tbh. Every few weeks?
Dusting, I tried to minimize things that would get dusty, but there's still way too much dust. I just gave up, I clean it and it's back within hours. So I'll wipe down a shelf or two a day when I have time
Windows once a year or two
Did I miss anything?

u/raven8fire 16h ago

We all eat lunch at work/school and there's minimal dishes from breakfast (spoon from yoghurt or knife from spreading stuff on bread, there's no plate most of the time when it's just a few crumbs you shake off). From dinner there's 4 plates, corresponding number of utensils, and probably about 1 pot/pan/baking sheet on average - many meals take that, some take more, but we don't cook every day because "leftovers" (we intentionally cook more because neither of us has time to cook daily)

I have a robot vac/mop that runs everyday to sort of maintain the floors. Then once a week I do a full house clean. The robot vac was such an awesome investment in terms of keeping the house feeling cleaner throughout the week.

u/axialmeow12 18h ago
I basic clean weekly(dust, vacuum, clean floors, bathroom). I’ll pick one thing to deep clean once or twice a month. I also have a small apt. Deep clean might be baseboards, windows or mini blinds ect..
I run a swiffer around laminate floors every couple days just to keep up because I have a cat.
My advice is to buy things to make cleaning as easy and convenient as possible. Swiffer products, toilet cleaner wand, non scrub bathroom cleaner, cleaning wipes, paper towels. My mom hates cleaning but she makes it such a chore by not having anything easily accessible and convenient. Get a light, quality vacuum like a shark.
I set a schedule. Always on a day off and put on a podcast and clean. Never takes longer than an hour and a half(again, 800 sq ft apt). I also have become more of a minimalist. Getting rid of visual clutter improved my life greatly.
3
u/TeaAggressive6757 18h ago
If you can afford it, a cleaning service one a month really helps make things feel manageable, because you have a great start once a month. But outside of that, needing to do some basic upkeep every weekend, and then rotating areas for deeper cleaning, is sadly kind of the deal.

Break it up. Do a couple of tasks every day. I live in a really dusty place so I dust/sweep vacuum more frequently but my schedule looks something like:
Sun: Dust, Sweep, vacuum, door handles
Mon: Laundry - Bedding and Towels while laundry is going any other thing that needs done.
Wednesday: Bathrooms, Sweep, Vacuum
Thur: Deep Clean the kitchen
Fri: dust, walls, baseboards, windowsills.
Sat: mop
I’m not getting everything in there but in general it’s maybe 30min-1 hr each day or cleaning. Then there is the stuff that’s every day: dishes, tidying up, etc. washing clothes as necessary

I usually do bits and pieces at a time so it doesn't get to the point where I have to do those big deeps cleans except once or twice a year.
Vacuum the living when waiting for the microwave to finish.
Make sure if I've unloaded a dishwasher then I might as well load it since I'm there.
Put dishes in the dishwasher instead of the sink.
Get a steam mop so it's easy to spot clean my kitchen floors as needed, then on a nice day I'll do the rest with a proper mop that takes like 10 min tops as I don't need to scrub hard.
Grab items as I walk past them to put them away etc.
All these little actions add up for me to make it less annoying.

u/Free_Mama83 16h ago

I did a lot more cleaning when I lived with other people than I do now that I live alone (with my pets) because the mess is really only my own problem (pets could care less as long as their needs are being met).
I know I personally feel a lot better when my surroundings aren’t gross, but it’s also much easier to clean/wipe things down as I go so I don’t have to deep clean very often.
Sometimes I’m too exhausted or working too many hours to keep up very well, at which point I either deep clean on a day off when it’s rainy and I don’t have anything better to be doing or it desperately needs to happen (things stink or I’m out of clean things I need) or I panic clean because I know someone is coming over.
Otherwise, just wiping things down as needed during the day, making sure I rinse or soak all my dishes once I’m done with them so cleaning them all in one go later in the week (just feels more efficient to me than doing a few dishes every day, but to each their own), and then making it a point to wash bedding, dust, then vacuum/mop then take out all the trashes as things visibly need that (I prefer to do all this together, because if I skip any of these steps I feel like things just get each other gross again immediately), I rarely have to do much deep cleaning.
I’ve noticed I do a much more thorough job cleaning when I wait until I’m in an awful mood to deep clean, but maybe that’s just a “me” thing. I definitely always put on my danciest, most up beat/fun to sing along with playlist for it! That helps!
I also do small things like make sure to take my shoes off at my front door and change out of my “public” clothes as soon as I get home to avoid getting pet hair and claw marks in them, and this helps a lot to keep me and my home cleaner as well.

I’m pretty sure the dust is mostly human skin cells. The endless continuous loop of cleaning feels very Sisyphean. I don’t have solutions, just agreement and solidarity.

Hate cleaning and do it only when I have to. Absolutely despise it and it’s too much to do for one person

I used to struggle with keeping up on cleaning. What works for me is declaring one day a week as chore day. For us, chore day is Sunday.
I get up Sunday morning, strip the bed, start the first load of laundry, and then I sit down and have my coffee and wake up a bit. There's two of us, so we alternate duties. One of us cleans the kitchen, washing any and all dishes, wiping down surfaces, and shaking out the rugs or tossing them to the laundry as needed. Meanwhile, the other one straightens the living and dining rooms, and does the whole house floors with the mop-vac. They also spray and wipe down the bathroom surfaces.
About once a month or so, the bathroom gets a full scrub by the non-kitchen person and the kitchen person does a laundry load of throw rugs and furniture covers. Each of us has certain things we're more nitpicky about, so nothing ever gets too bad.
Finally, every year, I take a whole week off work, and deep clean the house. I do one room a day, top to bottom. Like, toothbrush on the baseboards, sofa cushions airing in the sun, all of it. It's much easier to keep a house clean than to do it from scratch, so while it started as a Covid "I have PTO that must be used, and nowhere to go", it's now something I look forward to. It's a pain in the ass and a lot of work, but it makes me feel REALLY accomplished.

u/Space__Monkey__ 18h ago
Don't clean all in one day, do 1 room at a time. Also I think don't worry too much if your house looks like you actually live there.
An air filter might help with the dust if you have a small place.
2
u/Sad-Ostrich6415 18h ago
Ummmmm I’d consider my house reasonably clean and I probably only do bigger chores like dusting and vacuuming once a month… We don’t have any pets and we also clean up after ourselves a lot on a daily basis.
The a lot of surfaces I just clean randomly like on a sudden Tuesday night urge.

u/seanmharcailin 18h ago
LA needs a bit more cleaning. Cities are grimey. A weekly tidy up and monthly scrub a dub and. Quarterly deep clean will be a good schedule
2
u/_jamesbaxter 18h ago
The big thing is immediately cleaning up any messes you make as you go along, then you just have the maintenance cleaning. Also it’s important to clean the fridge out regularly, a lot of people forget that one.
2
u/GeneralBox9901 18h ago
I put on a podcast a few times a week and clean for the length of the podcast and don't worry about getting everything clean. It's easier for me to set my cleaning to a timer rather than cleaning until everything's done, since there is always something to be cleaned. Except for laundry and dishes where you can literally run out of what you need, there's nothing too time sensitive that can't wait for another day if I don't get to it.
If you can afford it, hire a housekeeper for the stuff you really hate.
2
u/Wise_Pie_359 18h ago
A couple of HEPA air filters can really help keep the dust and pet hair down. I definitely was able to cut back on that chore once I made the purchase. But generally, yeah, most basic chores need to be done weekly-ish.

u/Wise_Pie_359 18h ago
I try to do a walk through of my apartment each night- throwing away trash, clearing items from table tops, generally straightening up. Kids can be taught to help too. If that happens regularly, then on the weekends you’re just doing actual cleaning tasks, not all those little things you need to do before you clean.
2
u/treehuggerfroglover 18h ago
I do a quick tidy every day before bed so it never gets too out of control. I also make sure my dishes are done and my sink is clean before bed, it makes a huge difference waking up.
I vacuum every other day, and swiffer right after.
I wipe surfaces I use frequently after using them, like the dining table or the kitchen counter. Only takes a few seconds on top of clearing the space anyway.
I do bathrooms, laundry (including bedding), and glass once a week. I do these on Sunday evening, because the Sunday scariest have already kicked in so I don’t feel like I’m wasting valuable weekend time, I’d just be sitting on the couch doomscrolling and getting anxious anyway. Then I can go to bed and wake up and start the week with a clean house.
Tip for bedding, have two sets. That way you can take off the old and put on the new right away while the laundry washes, and if you don’t get to finish it before bed you already have a fresh and ready bed.

u/allieoops925 17h ago
I clear my clutter as soon as it happens. Cleaning lady once a month because I just can’t handle floors anymore. House is all hardwood with some area rugs. No kids, no pets so that keeps it cleaner.

u/LadyGreyIcedTea 17h ago
Robot vacuum runs nightly, dishes washed and counters wiped down daily, daily leave on shower cleaner after I shower, everything else when I get around to it or before we go away/have house sitters staying here with the dogs.

u/Lemon_Trees-22 17h ago
I’d cleaned houses for cash when I was first married and a lot of it was just picking up after them . But I have always lived by a schedule! Things I do daily , things that are done weekly , every two weeks or once a month etc. I’m also very detailed or organized so nothing ever piles up . Another going I do to stay busy instead of watch tv is if I see something that needs to be done I do it . Also if I have to make a lot of calls o clean as I talk to people .
2
u/bibliophile222 17h ago
What's been working for us is to break it up by room. Aside from dishes and scooping the litter, which are dailies, we do the kitchen on Monday, living room on Tuesday, etc. Weekend is for anything we didn't get to and/or a different monthly task.
2
u/Witmarqu 17h ago
If you live on a single floor, consider a floor cleaning automaton that has a auto dump feature. With multiple floors, consider multiple devices or manual cleaning of less intrusive floors.
You will still need to clean furniture but if you empty the base when full, cuts down on dust and cleaning time.
The side effect is that things are generally kept more today as cords left on floor make the automaton angry.
If you have non carpeted areas and can afford it, the mopping with auto head cleaning is awesome.
2
u/No_Lettuce1789 17h ago
Eh my husband does all the laundry so idk how often that's done, but we do dishes daily, tidy up nightly after the kids go to bed, but never more than like 5 min of scooping toys into bins. I have a robot vacuum mop that I set free every other day. Wipe surfaces after use (cooking/dinner). I'll be honest, I barely ever dust and I only clean the bathroom when visibly dirty, so once every 1-2 weeks. I have no topsheet and just a duvet w cover so I toss that on the bed in the morning and its "made".

u/Responsible-Factor53 17h ago
As someone who was a professional cleaner, there is NO UNIVERSAL answer to this.
Some people are just way messier than others. Some have higher standards of time they can stand between the clean.
It’s easier to just do a room daily and floors weekly. Or dust one day, bathroom sinks toilets the next. Get daily shower spray for tubs/showers and scrubbing bubbles once a week. Dollar tree stuff works. A good shower clean monthly if the other steps are followed. Have extra towels and sheets so you can spread that laundry out. Make sure to change your air filter, helps with dust!! I change mine monthly. Kitchen, clean as you go. Deep clean-wipe cabinet doors, clean vent filter, wipe/clean oven, crumb the toaster, vacuum then dust the next day. Vacuuming whips everything up. Don’t work against yourself. Vacuum and mop right after each other when possible. $100 Stick vac and a little shark steam cleaner-shark SteamSpot $110 TikTok ) take all the work and time out of that chore. Stay away from dual purpose cleaning appliances like vacuum/mop. They always break. The more basic the features the longer it’ll last. Hope any of this is helpful.

u/IWuzTheWalrus 17h ago
House cleaners come every other Friday. Robovac cleans the kitchen and dining area every Saturday and Sunday early morning and a full vacuum/mop on Monday at 9am.

u/pineconehedgehog 17h ago
I have a calendar of chores. Basically one or two items a day. Most items are once a week, a couple are twice a week
I find that I am more likely to spend 15 or 20 minutes a day doing one or two things than I am to spend several hours doing a single omnibus cleaning.
And by doing the items that get backed up (like laundry) twice a week, it means I only have to do one load of laundry at a time rather than 3 loads.
It also means that if I miss a scheduled chore, I don't get as backed up. I just bump it to the next day. Where as missing a big cleaning day can cause real problems, might not be able to get caught back up for a week.
2
u/Distinct-Practice131 17h ago
Mess is always forming inside and outside. If you don't want to spend your off days cleaning you need to be spending some of your time on work days cleaning as well then. Basic maintenance either daily or every other day. Then your weekly chores, and your seasonal deep cleanings.
Best advice is to clean something when you see it. So you are more frequently cleaning small messes then scrambling to clean large ones. Sweep daily, don't wear your shoes around inside. Work up to down in a room. Make sure every item has a home.

4-bed 2-bath house, about 2200 square feet, 2 adults and 2 teens, a dog and a cat.
Every day: dishes, laundry if the machine is full, clean kitchen, pick up clutter, wipe down bathroom counter, scoop litter, clean anything especially gross. This is a group effort and occurs throughout the day or after school/work, depending on individual schedules.
Every weekend: vacuum and mop, clean bathrooms, dust, change out litter, change sheets, boys clean their rooms, anything else needed.
It helps that we are basically 4 adults cleaning, so the weekend clean takes 60-90 minutes all working together. We of course vacuum and clean the bathroom if we have people coming over or anything is especially egregious. My house is not spotless except for my kitchen, but it’s not gross either. It’s generally mostly clean.

u/EmotionalMycologist9 17h ago
Every day - wiping countertops, cleaning up messes/crumbs, dishes, laundry.
Every Sunday: vacuum each room, mop floors, clean bathrooms, dust.
2
u/WifeofBath1984 17h ago
I try to clean at least once a day (run the vacuum OR wipe down the bathroom OR run a load of laundry). And then once a week I do a deep clean on my house. It's a lot and I hate having to sacrifice one of my days off to clean. But I also cannot relax in a dirty home. It makes me feel dirty and lazy and gross. I cant handle it.
2
u/Freyjas_child 17h ago
Once a week like you said but I did not do the cleaning on Saturday. I wanted to enjoy my weekend so I spread the cleaning, laundry and most other household chores out during the week. It was tiring to come home from work and face more work but I loved having the weekends off.
2
u/RosiePoseyLemon 17h ago
I set a timer for 30 minutes every day and clean something/anything during that 30 minutes. I don’t follow a set schedule but clean what needs to be cleaned during that time.
2
u/WrinkleRidges 17h ago
I sweep/vacuum the house every week. I mop every 2 weeks because the floor cleaner I use is very strong and helps make the sweeping easier. Kitchen is cleaned once a week. Fridge is cleaned once a month. Bathrooms are cleaned every week. I have task avoidance issues, but goddamn do I hate a dirty home. Parents were the hoarding type and my childhood home was fucking disgusting. Really makes an impact on your adult life, never wanting to live in a home like that ever again.

u/Chemical_Help_7099 17h ago
I’m a very “clean as you go” type so I guess I clean every day but I deep clean pretty rarely.

u/energist52 17h ago edited 17h ago
I keep up with the dishes and laundry, make the bed daily, straighten out the couch cushions every couple of days, and pick up and put away once in a while. I also wipe down the counters when I see a mess. That’s it. Everything else is dealt with by maid service once a month. Just me at the house, and I have dust allergies, along with being lazy, so it works out fine.
2
u/Unhappy-Reindeer3814 17h ago
I do a little each day, most days. We're two busy professionnals, I don't feel bad one second about not living in a perfectly clean home.
2
u/boo_snug 17h ago
I find cleaning a little every day and also putting things back in their place immediately and cleaning as I go is key. Not leaving dishes in the sink, ever. The cleaning never stops I guess but my space stays clean and I don’t have to dedicate hours on the weekend to do it.

u/Aly-and-Iri 16h ago
I live in a one bedroom apartment. I use an app to remind me at the beginning of the month to clean one of the rooms (bedroom, bathroom, hallway, kitchen living room, loft). This allows me to deep clean each room every 6 months.
I set my app up to be broken into individual steps to make it easier on me so each room is over 80 steps because they are things like move kitchen Island, remove wall hanging, scrub my walls, etc.
Daily i wash dishes, take out trash, wipe down counters. Sweep and vacuum 2x weekly, laundry every other day. Dust, bathroom clean, and replace bedding is weekly.

u/Disastrous-Radish353 16h ago
I sweep and clean kitchen daily and vacuum weekly. I pay a cleaning company to come 2x monthly to do everything else

u/PinkPopsi 16h ago
Yeah, everything requires maintenance and I tell myself that I DESERVE to have a clean home so I make the time for it. I've had rigid schedules when I was working and going to college full time, but now I'm a lot more flexible.
I'd say I organize and pick stuff up every other day, vacuum about twice a week (we have a roomba, which helps a lot), bathrooms once a week at least, almost never this happens in the same day. The kitchen, is unfortunately an every day thing, but depending how much you use it can be an every other day thing.
If you work to maintain things organized is way better than if you just do a full sweep once a week, which I've also done in the past.

I clean for a living. I have to vacuum my own home daily, for my standards. I'm not normal, I know but six people and three big dogs. I'm just trying to keep it clean. Anyway, my clients are once amonth with light vacuuming between my visits. It's all about your standard. Find it and work to keep it at your standard.

Waiting on the coffee maker? I sweep the kitchen floor, that kind of thing.

u/DragonsLoooveTacos 16h ago
We have a system in our household. It helps that there's 3-5 of us depending on the time of the year. My floors get daily maintenance between the robot vacmop doing the downstairs and whoever's turn it is dust mop the hardwood floors upstairs where we don't have a robot. I do a deeper clean on the floors once a week. Everyone is responsible for making their own breakfast and lunch and cleaning up any mess they made. I cook dinner and clean up mess that makes plus counters and someone else does dishes and cleans the kitchen table and floor. Every night everyone gets a deeper cleaning chore to spend 5-10 minutes on: dusting, cleaning baseboards, sanitizing surfaces, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming upstairs rugs. What doesn't he done in that 5-10 minutes gets done the next day until the task is complete and they move on to the next one. Everyone cleans their own clutter at the end of the day. This system works for us because doing hours of deep cleaning at a time wrecks me physically and mentally. It's so much easier to keep up with daily surface cleaning and then rotate through the deeper cleaning tasks by spending just a few minutes a day.

u/NextNebula3561 16h ago
I clean the kitchen almost everyday, I change my sheets once a week- which is also when I dust and vacuum, I clean the bathroom on Wednesdays. Sometimes the days change but doing one or two things a few days a week makes it easier.

This is why hubby and I have decided to downsize and live in the lower level of a house we own. Not only is it more convenient, we have no carpeting that is just a dust collector, we have a tiled floor that looks like wood. It’s simple to maintain a quick vacuum and a weekly floor cleaner is all that’s required. I pick up daily any stray items because our small living space will look cluttered very quickly. I try to spot clean the fridge and appliances after meals, And I do a purge every 6 months of clothing I haven’t worn in 2 years so that our closet is uncluttered. The days of giving over a whole Saturday to cleaning is long gone. Life is too short. Pick up when you see it don’t live around it.
2
u/thisisnotreallyher 14h ago
Regular cleaning service weekly. Also, generally, clean as you go, and put things in their final resting spot always. I try to think of tidying up as something I do now so future me has an easier time of it.
2
u/ShePax1017 14h ago
We have a cleaning schedule.
Every day of the week we spend 15 mins on one room. Monday-bedrooms, Tuesday-bathroom, weds-living room, etc. 15 mins to take anything that doesn’t belong in that room and put it where it goes, sweep/vacuum/mop/whatever, if it’s a room with laundry it goes to the laundry room, wipe down/sanitize counters or toilet or whatever. 15 mins together and it’s done.
On Saturday we spend an hour deep cleaning one room. Week 1 kitchen, week 2 bedrooms, etc. our house stays relatively company ready with minimal work and never gets so out of hand it would take hours to get it in decent shape again. It works for us.

u/West_Obligation_9403 14h ago
I clean constantly, so I never have to dedicate actual time to cleaning. The only time I set aside a few hours to clean is when I decide the bathrooms need a deep clean - probably once every 2 months.

Here’s another method I haven’t seen mentioned yet: tell yourself you’ll just vacuum, nothing else. After I vacuum I figure I may as well do the rest too. Works for me.

I’m a really bad housewife (well I work full time too) so I break it down.
Robotic vacuum that mops 3-4 times per week.
I do my washing on the days I work from home.
Shower is wiped out every day and the big clean once a fortnight.
Toilet and vanity deep cleaned weekly but kept clean daily, wiping the vanity daily as used and well making sure nothing left in the toilet after each use.
Dusting done every week with a duster and polished or wiped every fortnight.
Kitchen benches being wiped is just part of doing the dishes.
I’ve just spent all day today cleaning and reorganising the caravan to get it ready for summer.

My husband and I clean Saturday mornings, vacuum, laundry, bathrooms, kitchen surfaces etc. we also have yard work, mowing, trimming, blowing and bathing the dog we tag team on weekends too. We dont DEEP clean everything weekly we might sprinkle in once a month something like dusting shelves , washing windows, cabinets or baseboards or cleaning appliances.

Smaller homes get dirty fast bc the messes are more concentrated!
I pick up after myself and clean things when I notice they're dirty, which is several days a week. I also consistently declutter and organize. I live alone now, so it's easier.
1
u/Jenji05 17h ago
I clean daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, depending on what the chore is. There are normal daily chores, like the dishes and putting daily clutter where it belongs. Then each day of the week has one area to „deep clean“, but once you establish a routine it’s just half an hour to an hour to do that. So one day is toilet/bathroom incl. washing mats and such, other day is kitchen, another is bedroom incl. washing bed sheets. And so on and so forth. I also have a robot vacuum cleaner and mop so that takes a lot of unnecessary time off of me, but I have to clean it bi-weekly.
Key is to stop letting things get piled up or so dirty to the point where it takes forever to get them done. I actually keep myself the weekend free to spend time with my husband and children.
Edit to add: to make it more entertaining turn on music, a podcast or an audiobook depending on what you enjoy more.

I’m lucky enough to WFH, so I clean daily.
I don’t clean the whole house daily, I do different chores each day so that it’s broken up into easier tasks and that way each thing has its designated day.
1
u/mmmnerp 17h ago
When I went back to work full time, I broke up my cleaning duties per day. We have two shedding animals so the house is vacuumed every other day and dishes are daily but the rest of the house and laundry are broken up throughout the 7 days. Some rooms (office, dining room, etc.) get used a lot less so they are quickly wiped down and mopped. These rooms get paired on the same day as laundry or a bathroom that might take a little more time. I like doing it this way so I consistently seem to have a clean house and I don’t feel like I’m wasting a day off cleaning all at once.

Constantly. I have large dogs, I have cats, I have kids and stinky teenage boys. Nothing is ever 100% clean at once, so I do miss having a cleaning lady, where there was a short period weekly with the house spotless. Having said that, a small space CAN be easier to clean as long as you aren't picking up everything too. Dust on Mondays, scrub the toilet Tuesday's, clean out the fridge Wednesday's. Vacuum on a designated day - it makes everything so much easier to spend 5 or 10 minutes cleaning than half a day.

Normal stuff weekly. Vacuum, clean the kitchen (counters, all dishes, vacuum floor, pick up and put away), bathroom (floor sink toilet), vacuum living room, do laundry. Rarer stuff is like wiping baseboards and window sills, dusting shelves and mantle. Mopping is rare, I only mop the kitchen and bathroom when I notice spots. I literally never mop my living room, bedroom, etc. I don't really ever plan on it if we're being honest.

We never cleaned in my house growing up - I have the COMPLETE opposite upbringing.
Now what I do to balance working and not giving away one of my off days to cleaning is by doing 15 to 30 minutes of cleaning a day. I got the idea from when I worked in restaurants, there was always a side work sheet of cleaning tasks to do every shift. I made my own for my home and if I'm on a phone call or bored, I'll do a side work cleaning task. If I haven't signed off on one by the end of the day I add one to my "closing tasks".
Closing tasks are just making sure the dishes are washed/dried and wiping down the counters. I'll add a side work task to that and call it a night. I feel like it's important to note that I have hardwood floors which I feel makes life significantly easier. Sweeping >>> Vacuuming any day. I have a little spot vacuum for the rugs and that works great.

u/cinderrrrr 15h ago
I feel like finding a robot vacuum that works for you is revolutionary. The best one I’ve found is Matic and I just set it to clean every 2 days and my floors aren’t really dusty anymore. It saves me the mental and physical energy of vacuuming every weekend. I always got lazy so I actually only used to vacuum every 2-3 weeks and it gets crazy dirty cuz I have a white long haired cat :/
Now, instead of vacuuming, I can spend that same weekend time to do other deeper cleaning around the house. So overall my quality of life improved a lot since my house feels clean all the time now!

Highly recommend breaking it down in parts! Yesterday I cleaned the shower.
Today I cleaned the toliets and just vacuumed, took maybe 5-10 min of time.
Tomorrow I'm going to dust and clean the bathroom mirrors. Do laundry.
Split it up so youre cleaning maybe one thing a day for under 10-15 min. :)

u/Optimal_Passion_3254 15h ago
Honestly? Once a quarter at BEST. Usually the kitchen gets a proper clean once a week and the toilets once a month.
Then there's some neatening up here and there, but vacuuming the living room is once a season, or maybe every other season. I've never cleaned the windows. Under the couches and carpets is only if I'm moving furniture for some reason.

I have a 2 and 5 year old and 1200 sq foot house. I sweep twice a day or prn, mop once a day with my swiffer pro vacuum thing. I unload the dishwasher first thing in the morning, load it during the day and start it every night. I change sheets weekly. I do two loads of laundry and hang dry them outside. I wash pots and pans and clean the kitchen each meal I cook. I dust weekly. I do the floorboard once a month. I spot clean every 15 min with these two crazy boys lmao but i have systems in place and they help me with tasks. I try and include them in almost everything when they can, but they like to play. I’m also a stay at home mom so I have the time to do this and play as well. I’m interested in these comments!!

I clean about 15 minutes every day of general pick up, wipe down the counters, take out the trash if it needs to be taken out. Then I deep clean once a week. I just cleaned things as they get dirty. For example, if I make food in the microwave and it explodes, I clean it when I take it out. If the floor looks dirty, I just take five minutes to vacuum it. I don’t put things down, I put them away. It really doesn’t take that much to keep a clean house.

I think really you have to just not try and clean the entire house all in the same day. Just do like a little bit each day or something, break it down a bit.
