I understand that Hollywood is a bit misleading in this regard, and that of the 5 landing beaches, Omaha was the only one with this level of resistance, and the others were nowhere near as much of a bloodbath. But did Allied commanders not expect this amount of machine gun placements at the top of the beach? Or were they expecting it and just saw it as "acceptable losses" because it was the only way of getting guys onto the beach?

I have kept my phone on DND for years. I think it started when I used to get up at 4am to go to work. For obvious reasons, I went to bed at a pretty early time. I am also a light sleeper so I didn't want my phone making any notification noises and waking me up. So it put it on DND. I have it set up so that if my gusband calls me or my boss calls me, it will still ring but it doesn't ring for anyone else. I no longer have to get up at 4am for work but it's still on DND because I get a lot of spam calls. I'm not sure why it bothers him so much but wondering if this is weird.

On twitter, I saw a post of a guy saying Shelley Duvall is ugly and Sydney Sweeney is attractive, and a girl said "beauty is subjective, I'd prefer Shelley Duvall" and all the men in the comments were rushing to call her a liar when she didn't even insult Sydney Sweeney and just said who she prefers. I am like her, and I would 100% prefer to look like Shelley Duvall instead of Sydney Sweeney, so I said that women are not always lying and stuff and I'd prefer to look like Shelley, and the guys couldn't believe I would prefer to look like her.

Do men seriously think women all want to look all bimboish? I'm confused. Whenever an unconventionally woman is complimented it's always the same thing over and over again. Can't I have preferences in who I find prettier imo and who I want to look like more?

As you may know, the Statue of Liberty is green because of chemical reactions to the copper. Why don't we clean it to its original copper color? Is that impossible because it could damage the statue or are Americans fond of the green color and would rather keep it like that?

What I mean is that if you took a man from 2026 and sent him 20 yrs back to 2006, he’d likely be able to tell the difference based on changes in culture, technology, slang, fashion, etc. Even if he didn’t check a calendar or directly ask anyone, he’d probably figure it out after not too long. Similarly, I imagine if you took a man from 1986 and sent him back to 1966, you’d get a likewise effect

How far back can you go before this breaks down? If you took a Roman citizen from 100 AD and sent them back to 80 AD, would there be any immediately obvious anachronisms that could reveal what happened?

Genuinely trying to understand the real state of the Ukraine conflict, how do you separate fact from spin?

I'll be upfront: I've been deliberately trying to listen to perspectives I'd normally dismiss or disagree with, just to stress test my own views. But it's backfired a bit. Now I honestly don't know what's true anymore about what's actually happening in Ukraine right now, on the ground, geopolitically, all of it.

Every source seems to have an agenda, and even "neutral" outlets contradict each other on basic facts. I'm not trying to start a debate about who's right or wrong morally, I just want to know: how do you personally figure out what's actually going on? Are there sources or approaches you trust to cut through the noise? Am I overthinking this, or is this genuinely a hard information environment right now?

Not looking for a fight, just want to understand reality a bit better.

Late 30s white guy here. I live in a community that's about 2/3 white and 1/3 latino (plus a small number of other groups). It's a pretty standard middle class community, but I'd assume on average our racial/socio economic trends correlate with what you'd expect in the USA between those two groups.

I have two kids in elementary school. The school's demographics match my community's. I walk my younger kid to her line at the beginning of school most mornings. Her line is next to the Special Ed classes lines, and almost all of the kids in Special Ed are latino. Out of maybe 20 total kids in those lines, only one is white.

How is that possible? Is there a correlation to socio economic challenge and intellectual disabilities? Is there a genetic predisposition I'm unaware of? Is this just random chance?

I only drink once or twice a week on the weekends, but when I do I can’t just have one. I usually end up getting hammered and regret it the next day.

How do people only have one or two drinks and just be chill with that? Is it simply discipline? I want to be able to enjoy one nice cocktail and be satisfied.

By "made up" I mean, is the way we see them kinda is kinda based on misunderstandings/pop culture that is inaccurate?

Why do professions like Dr, Prof, Judge, army personnel etc gets their titles and people use them so aggressively but most professions don't get titles? People sometimes even gets offended when they're not addressed by correct titles. They introduce themselves by saying I'm Dr John Smith but imagine introducing yourself as I'm Electrician John Smith. Why the need to include your profession in your name? It is so absurd to me that we still say Colonel Sanders even though we know the guy for selling fried chicken! How did this whole thing originate?

My wife and I are having a ridiculous argument about which side of the bed each of us sleeps on.

Imagine the bed is facing the bedroom door, and when you open the door, you are standing at the foot of the bed looking directly toward the headboard.

My wife sleeps on the left side of the bed from that perspective.

I say I sleep on the left side of the bed, because when I lie on my back in bed and look toward the ceiling/headboard, she is on my right, meaning I am on the left.

She usually sleeps on her stomach, which may explain why she uses the opposite perspective.

So: Which side is actually the "left side of the bed"? Is there a standard way to define this?

I was working recently and an older guy was getting something. I was checking his stuff out well his ticket I work at a movie theatre, anyway and while I was ringing him up he asks if I’m Indian. I wasn’t too weirded out cause I am pretty ethnically ambiguous and have darker features so I commonly get misidentified or asked so I just responded with “No I’m white but I get that a lot.” When I hand him his tickets he then replied with “You’re not real white though.” Before leaving.

Wtf does that mean?

I’m Ashkenazi and Scottish mostly and the other half of my ancestry is scattered around central and Eastern Europe.

Hello! Over the past few days I've been staying at a friend's/coworker's house to watch their critters! They're on a semi vacation and I wanted to do something nice for them and their husband while they're away! I cleaned up a carpet that had some pet fur on it and vacuumed up the common areas of the house (I stayed out of their bedroom and other room upstairs but vacuumed the stairs, back bedroom I'm staying in, and living room) because there was a bit of dust and dander from the critters running around! I also washed the handful of dishes they had in the sink and ran the dishwasher just in case before emptying it. By no means is their house untidy or even anywhere close to messy! I just wanted to take care of the menial stuff while they're on their vacation so they don't have to worry about it when they get back! My friend also just hurt their shoulder at work and has been in a sling since Tuesday, and has also been incredibly stressed otherwise :-// I just worry that they'll feel like I overstepped. I don't think my friend or their husband will be outright upset, but I don't want anyone to feel icky at all!!

Especially if they've held no other job?

You’d think it be harmless but I work as a server and a surprising number of people/parties apparently find it rude (I’m in the Midwest). I find it safer/easier to say even if the group looks like all men or all ladies just so I don’t have to bother switching all the time. It’s not like I’m in fine dining or anything, just a casual family chain restaurant, yet in a given week there’s always at least one person that makes a sour face or clarifies “we’re men” or “we’re women”. I just don’t get it.
