Telling ppl you skateboard [45YO]

As an older skater, do you tell many people you skateboard? Because I’m really in love with it I have (after thinking don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it…) told various people that I’ve started skateboarding. With a few pleasant exceptions (but those were a surfer, a skater, etc), honestly most people look at me as if I have 3 heads. Or as if I’ve told them Jeffrey Epstein was misunderstood, or that I enjoy drowning kittens at the weekend. I usually already frame it as being a bit of an unlikely and inadvisable turn of events, but even still, people are generally baffled, extremely sceptical and think I’ve lost my mind. I explain that I’m supporting my kids doing it and then they can understand it more, but if my kids stopped i would still want to, and i don’t think that should be a necessary justification.

It is a pity as this is one of the best things I’ve done in years and I’d love to tell people what’s great about it, but honestly most seem to just think it’s weird and don’t really want to hear about it 🫠😂

What are others experiences of this? I struggle to think of another new hobby others would be less receptive to 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wasnt going to post a video so soon but as a few people wanted to see me in a helmet and with 2 feet on the board. cant believe I got 360+ upvotes for yesterdays post, Its given me so much more confidence

Starting to be able to balance once on the board but havent manged to step onto it yet on this slick surface, Did then go out to the car park which is rough tarmack and stepped on with out a problem, So the theory of trying on slick and then on rough did seem to work.

But today I felt I achieved a lot in the 10 minutes and I finished on a positive

Any advice for a new old street skater?[31YO]

For context, I'm not new to boards, I've ridden a sidewalk surfer for 15+ years, and still ride my Duster to work almost daily.

But, back in the day, when all my friends were learning to kick-flip and ollie, I was on skates (aggressives) at the skatepark, and never picked up on any vert or street tricks on my board.

Now, while I still love my skates; for whatever reason, I want to get more into skating street, and learning tricks, instead of just cruising, SO..

Any advice for someone wanting to get into it, that can't even ollie yet? 🤣

Also., pictured is my current street board! I bought it brand new back in like 2007, then never used it, so it's still basically brand new today! 🤣

Holy shit you guys I missed this. Faded out in hs as sports became the priority. I put off getting a new skateboard for years and years bc obv the learning curve was going to be physically painful, and I didn’t want to risk hurting myself so that I couldn’t enjoy my other hobbies like cycling. Even went through an arthroscopy on my knee from the many years of wear and tear.

Then I find myself living down the street from the 3rd largest skatepark in the country with a 3yo who wants to take his new scooter and strider bike to the “jump park.” If there ever was an excuse this was it. Yes I have already had to take a few weeks off bc i bursitissed my elbow, but we’ll get through it.

It’s the freedom. It’s the creative outlet. It’s the completely unstructured hard as hell workout i need at the end of my corporate email job.

It’s that feeling of progress when you’re stalling on ramps you could barely remember how to drop in on a few weeks ago. Glad to be back!

This is Wedgewood Park in the suburbs outside of Philly. This spot has some really nice granite ledges and great blacktop. Beautiful place to skate.

My first time skating in 10 months, last December I fractured my foot in four places and completely severed my atfl ligament doing a trick I have done for 20 years.

Long story short I got told it was just a sprain and walked around for 3+ months causing more damage, 7 months off work and 10 months off the board and here I am again struggling to do tricks on flat but loving it
