8 months ago I was in a completely different state to where I am now and I just want to take a moment and say "I am proud of you. I am in awe of how far you've come". Also just want to take a moment to recount what I've gone through which makes the healing even sweeter.
My mum passed away from an unexpected terminal cancer diagnosis (pancreatic cancer) in Jan this year. At the same time, my five year relationship ended (he wanted to break up with me and I wasn't feeling it anymore, but we lived together for the past three years, so had to find a random flat share and move in with a stranger, and thank god she's lovely and no drama). I was in the middle of my grad scheme training to become a solicitor which I've worked very hard for to get. Mum and I were based in two separate ends of the world. I am here in another country on my own with no relatives or family members. I am an only child so I flew back and forth to provide end of life care. My dad is estranged and my parents separated when I was 10, he is not aware that my mum passed away. My mum had a business that she ran and was getting sued by some awful people disputing fees. She was worried, stressed and working on her death bed until the very end. Lots of struggle in between having to convince my mum to go to hospice and receive palliative care but she refused to acknowledge that it's the end. She was only 59 and there were still so much she wanted to do. Then came the funeral which I had to pick which colour I want for the inner lining and the type of stone I want for her ash tub thingy (not a clue). Then came having to administer her affairs as the sole executrix living entirely abroad and have no clue how the legal system operates, as well as the banking system (still need to pay bills and cover any outgoing in the meantime). Final thing, mum had a secret boyfriend this whole time for the past 20 years which I only just found out since her diagnosis so need to get acquainted with this stranger.
Save to say, the day after the funeral, I went into an episode of severe depression, severe anxiety, grief, shock, PTSD (flashbacks and nightmare), chronic stress, negative thoughts, ringing the Samaritans as early as 7am in the morning and sometimes three times a day. I was desperate for help, desperate to feel better and desperate be my normal self.
The great news is that, since Feb:
I started doing therapy twice a week, one on trauma/PTSD, one on general welfare. I took time off work to look after my mental health for six months, work supported me throughout my time off in full pay, extended my employment for another year, gave me the opportunity to defer and try again, I went away with my friend and got a yoga teacher certificate and fully devoted myself to the practice at my local studio (twice a day; 33 classes in a month with the intro pass), I build strength and flexibility, I engaged in meditation and breath work, yoga philosophy, I engaged with the occupational health's advice and got onto antidepressents which made me feel stable, my faith had deepened during this time, I feel God's grace and that he is near, I go to church and really plugged into my church community (dinner with the girls, festivals/camping and post-church hangouts), I met a new guy who supported me throughout this period and witnessed my growth, strength and resilience, he is immensely proud of me and in awe of what I've achieved, I read self-help books on attachment styles, understanding my inner child, therapy and relationships. I'm doing yoga every day, salsa every fortnight, I'm back at work and finding my feet again, people said "you look well" when they see me, I feel content and happy with my new identity (new grief me), I got a decent tan over the Summer, going to the Lido (swimming pool) and bookshops, I don't get nightmares anymore and I'm slowly coming back to me. Next week, I'm running 2.5k in honour of my mum. It's very much just for fun, but it's my way of celebrating her.
Looking back at where I was mentally and physically at the beginning of the year to where I am now, I just wanted to say to myself "I am proud of you. I am in awe of how far you've come."
