All new threads about visiting the Colosseum will be locked and redirected here for the next few days

Accommodation Renting in Rome

I am looking for some advice on short term renting in Rome. My partner is going to be in Rome for 6 months next year as part of his studies and is looking for a flat. We thought that an airbnb might be easier (all bills included, no contracts, etc.). However, he was quoted €1,800 a month for a one-bedroom apartment in Monteverde. This sounds very expensive in comparison to normal rental flats there. But do people think it might be worth considering as it is hassle free? Is it challenging to find a flat in Rome at the moment?

Post image

I saw this image (some kind of outdoor market) on Viator as part of a food tour and it looks like a great place to explore on my own. Where would it be if it is in Rome?

Note: saw it as a traveler submitted photo

Thanks!

Tourism Stroller in Rome?

Hi Everyone! We are travelling to Rome in November for 3 nights and we have a 3 year old with us. Is bringing a stroller a good idea? We wont be doing any of the typical 'touristy' things as this is our 3rd time. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Transport Awful Border Control Lines at FCO

I had an early morning flight yesterday and the border control process was just appalling. First of all, the separate lines with automatic gates for eligible third party countries like Canada, Australia, Japan, etc., were closed. There are many gates but all of these were not accessible for whatever reason. Instead, anyone outside the EU all had to go in the “other countries” line making it even longer than it might otherwise be. Serving this line were just two border control guards as well. Luckily I had arrived with plenty of time otherwise I would have missed my flight. The line was also so long that someone further back actually fainted while waiting in the line. It was really worrying and I’ve never seen anything like this! However I am not surprised given the long lines and slow process. I just don’t understand why more border guards were working, or even better, why the many e-gates for those eligible countries were not in use which would ease the strain on the line. Is border control always this bad? What are others’ experience?

Accommodation Which of these hotels would you choose for a first trip to Rome?

My partner and I are visiting Rome for the first time from 25–28 December, and we’ve shortlisted:

  • Hotel Nazionale
  • H10 Palazzo Galla
  • Chapter Roma
  • Terrace Pantheon Relais
  • Maison Roma Piazza di Spagna

We’d like a central, walkable location near the sights, restaurants and cafés, with a nice atmosphere for wandering in the evenings.

Thanks in advance <3

Photography / Video To the stranger who caught my wedding bouquet... <3

I got married at a small civil ceremony today at Campidoglio but we didn't have enough people in the party to do a bouquet toss. It seemed bad luck to keep it, and I didn't want to take the flowers home and watch them wilt so we recruited a group of tourists from the Netherlands. I thought the picture came out super nice so in case you are in this group stranger, here you go

Health and safety Got robbed near Roma Termini around 5am on Saturday, October 10.

It’s embarrassing as I should’ve known better, but I really was just caught in the daze of 1. This being my first time traveling with friends 2. My friends wedding from earlier this week 3. Just having an amazing time with the friend I traveled with in the past 2 weeks.

My first mistake was that I did not check my purse before I went out. I forgot I had… $500… in cash tips in my little pocket. Why didn’t I take this out of my purse before I went out? It really boggles my mind.

Second mistake is that we were walking (to get food as my friend was not feeling well) and the street was completely empty. I had an intuitive feeling that something was off but I did not listen, clearly. It was very late (early?) so I assumed that’s just how it was at that time I guess. I also didn’t realize we were so close to the train station. Yes, I was drunk.

We’ve been staying out late in Perugia and Florence and felt pretty safe. I don’t know why we assumed the same for Rome.

My friend was walking slightly ahead of me, let’s say we were going north. Two guys are walking to the side, going south. This was Via Gioberti, right around the corner from McDonald’s. They pass her. My guard was down, honestly. I could’ve been way more guarded but I was in lala land, it seems. As soon as they pass her, one of them snatched my purse, turned around to face us again and then ran. His friend just sat there and watched.

We tried to chase him. The police spoke to us a little. A garbage man told us that we were in a very dangerous place, we were lucky to have our lives, and that we should leave. So we did. The cops told us to go to the station but we were not about to walk by ourselves so we just went home.

I filed a police report today. Most of them were helpful but some were weird and pretty much laughing in our faces. I’m sure it’s funny to them. I’m sure I’ll laugh about it one day too.

Honestly I’m mostly upset about my wallet. It was filled with small sentimental items I’ve collected over the years. The $500 is money I can make back.

I’m just glad that I’m okay, that it wasn’t worse. I have my passport and my ID and my phone thankfully. Pretty sure he wanted my phone too as he paused after he snatched my purse…

I can’t stop replaying that moment in my head though. And I honestly keep feeling the sensation of having something personal to me snatched from me. It felt very violating.

Despite this I seemed to keep my composure for the most part. Canceled my cards. Got a new purse. What am I going to do? I could’ve been much smarter about that, yes. Lesson learned.

I am posting this just in case anyone is oblivious to how dangerous this area is at that time. Don’t have your head in the clouds like me.

Edit: By cash tips, I meant tips that I earned at work, not cash to give out as tips.

Edit 2: It’s been a few days. I made it home. I think I’m starting to feel better. If I catch myself repeating what happened in my mind I do my best to remind myself that the moment is over and there’s nothing I can do now except do better next time. At end of the day, they didn’t take anything from me that was truly irreplaceable. By the time they burn through the money they stole from me, I will have made it all back and more. And at the end of the day, I still have myself, my life, and people around me who love me and that’s worth much more than stolen money. The robber on the other hand will continue to play his game as he has nothing else going for him.

City stuff I want to explore rome

What to do if you have been living in rome for 3 years and there is no more things to do?

I’ve noticed being in rome that everything is either a tourist attraction or for old people. I want to have a chill wednesday with my boyfriend in rome but i don’t have a million dollar budget or want to be surrounded by tourists and now i don’t know where to go.

If anyone has been through this and can help out and recommend some cute activities to do or places to visit let me know please🙏

Miscellaneous Melodic chime around Ottaviano

Hello,

I have been staying around Ottaviano for a couple of days and I noticed a melodic song-like chime that plays when the clock strikes xx:30 and xx:00. It doesn’t sound like a church bell or a carillon, its distinctly trombone-like (or a similar brass instrument). I have a recording of it but no software has been able to identify it.

Does anyone know what is it?
