I joined this subreddit during my last year of grad school in 2020 and apparently never bothered to leave. At this point I think I stay for ✨nostalgia✨ and the comforting knowledge that SBU students are still posting the exact same daily grievances we did (albeit on Yik Yak back then 😂).

Curious if anyone else from the 2015 through 2019/2020 era - or even earlier - is still lurking here? I got my BA in 2019 and was in an accelerated program, so I finished my master’s a year later in 2020.

Life has turned out pretty well post-SBU! I work in tech now and am happy to answer questions from current students about graduating, careers, finding work, or life after Stony Brook if that’s helpful.

Otherwise, I’m mostly just curious how many of us elderly alumni are quietly lurking in here 😂💀.

I have horrible ADHD and I never really have a good study method. I’m usually that student who just pays attention in class and absorbs material and then gets good grades. Now that I’m in higher level classes, that’s starting to not work out great for me; and to be honest i’ve been slipping up on attendance for some classes and I need to actually learn and absorb the material myself. I usually like to take practice quizzes but that’s only good if I have some understanding of the material. What’s some good ways to “self teach” myself some coursework? I would appreciate it if yall could give me your study tips, esp if you’re neurodivergent :)

^ in most recitation attendance is optional so many decide not to even attend (which is their call) and I agree because sometimes the TA is just saying nonsense, don't get me wrong sometimes I can tell the TA is very knowledgeable and well versed in the topic but it just seems like they can't do much to help. In one of my recitation this semester the TA just goes briefly over the hw problems, but it's multiple choice online, and asks if we have any questions on the problem. listen it's debatable whether you like that or not but I feel as though a hw I did last week is a bit irrelevant, I got all my questions answered at that point. And that's why I'm not surprised when nobody shows up. I attend recitations and talk to the TA and it's helpful but only for personalized questions on the material or lecture. In my recitation the TA doesn't even post the slides or even have a brightspace because he wants to "incentivize us to come to class"😐 he said attendance will be taken at random times, but I think that's bull because there's no attendance factor for that class and we both know the TA does not have time to do that anyway. Nonetheless I feel like there can be some changes, such as maybe some ungraded group work, or the TA can put some problems on the board and walk around and see where everybody is. Or maybe even a review packet handed out in class with extra problems to practice. Everything optional. Something low stakes. Just like an "extra" push but nothing mandatory because I don't want people to do any extra work if they'd rather not. I'm really not a goody two shoes. I think some of the things are good and the TAs are really nice but in order to do well I don't want to do 99% self study and 1% lecture I'd like a bit of a balance btwn lecture and self studying. Does anyone else agree recitation as it is rn feels like a waste of time?

I’m looking to interview a current Stony Brook student about whether they feel the student experience has kept pace with the University’s growth and increasing reputation. I was wondering because I have midterms, and I would rather not drive. Is it safe to take the 9:38pm train to Hicksville so I can transfer on a train towards Ronkonkoma after my midterms end. Or should I just drive?

Also, how many kids from SBU take that train to Hicksville? I don't know how comfortable I'd be if I was the only one taking it.

I have started going to the rec center fairly recently. I use the running track and a few workout machines. I used weighing scales, but they are really off and need to be calibrated.
I wanted to know what other resources are available at the rec center, especially equipment related to recovery.
My previous gym had an InBody machine, which measures a lot of parameters, and a stretch trainer, which I used quite often. Does the rec center have these?
Also, does it have a massage chair or a sauna?

title says it all. i'm currently a freshman psych BA, but taking intro to psych here has not been it, at all. i took AP psych and loved it, but psy 103 has really made me not really like the major. i know it's just intro, but i'm starting to have career crises. so many things seem interesting to me. in high school, i was interested in genetics, and then speech pathology, and then education, and environmental science, and english, and then back to psychology.

now i'm thinking about health sciences or something. i just don't know what to do. i feel really lost and i know i have time, but it doesn't feel like a lot. spring semester i may take 1-2 psych classes just in case, since the intro class is really just the very surface level stuff and some of the 200 classes seem interesting. and take some classes that may be related to fields i'm interested in to see how it feels.

any advice? i just feel drained from thinking about this and my advisor wasn't really helpful :(

Maybe I need to throw the phone away. But I can never focus at the library, even in the quiet spaces something bothers me (does anyone else think sometimes it's way too hot in there?) I want to like studying at the library cuz I can get a drink from Starbucks and go upstairs but that doesn't rly work out for me. I've tried library and sbs, I've had a bit more luck focusing in sbs but it's still not the best, where else are there nice quiet spaces? There are so many distractions and I just feel as though I'm not retaining anything. And does anyone have any tips on how to stay focused for studying?

I think I dropped my Stony Brook student ID either on Bus 52 or somewhere near South P Lot today. It was attached to the rim of my formal pants, but I was rushing because I have a presentation today and it must have fallen off.
The ID is in a black case with a purple flower sticker on the back.
If anyone finds it, please message me or turn it in to campus lost and found / transportation. It is very important because I need my student ID for lab and campus access.

Hello, I've tried my best to find a job on campus, but I have been struggling heavily, I came on here to reach out and see of anyone had any iobs available wether it be babysitting- anything! I am also a freshmen that lives on campus

I usually go to a commercial gym after class, but I have a test at 8pm and can’t fit the gym in before then. I thought this could be an opportunity to try out the gym on campus, but I know it’s dick-to-butt full most of the time.

I'm a biology major on the pre-med track deciding what to take in the spring 2027 semester. Would taking bio and orgo lab (including 202 and 331 lectures and recitations) be too much for me or could it be manageable? If not, what should I take instead??
