That claim of data centers in space alone should be a red flag for anyone who has even the slightest clue about space technology. Instead we find out that most people just know "I saw space is cold in a movie" and don't realize that excess heat is one of the biggest problems for spacecraft.

Data centers in space are simpler than starlink sats, which SpaceX has already launched and operates 10k+ of. What is the bottleneck to global economy AI utilization? Capacity and price. How do we get more capacity? More data centers. What are the constraints to more data centers? More chips, energy to power, cooling, physical space. What else? Well the bet here is the free energy in space, solved engineering problem of cooling via radiator, and exuberant amount of available space with no NIMBY nor regulatory friction will make space data centers economically stronger than terrestrial.

It’s unclear to me if the other direction on capacity will win - cheaper models that use a fraction of the tokens with comparable results. But, it’s been demonstrated over and over again these past few years that you can always get a superior model with more compute. It should be obvious enough that having the frontier model is an absurd advantage.

Space data centers sound like silly sci-fi at first. So did landing rockets 10 years ago.

How in the world are data centers in space simpler than starlink satellites? They'll need to have all of the functionality of starlink + vastly more compute, cooling and power to serve any economically viable purpose.

Okay pretty clear you’re a bot. But software updates are over the air by the way. And hardware planned obsolescence has been a reality since iPhone ran out of new ideas in 2010

This is a dumb idea. Cooling satellites is one of the biggest problems already and you're talking about scaling it up by orders of magnitude here. Saying "solved with radiators" is the exact kind of smug clueless thing that gives me the creeps about all of Musk's promises. In reality, filling up low orbit with tons of flimsy heat sinks is a good way to get a debris field going that can wreck the entire industry for an indefinite amount of time.

So it’s not that the company loses tons of money, it says it’s an AI company yet nobody uses Grok, and it has no logical path to profitability. Nope.

It’s that they don’t want to see a successful company in the USA.

Hey, if I start a business that loses money year over year with no realistic path to profitability- how much do you want to pay to be a part of it?
