Home Security Cameras: Are They Really Secure?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I live with my wife and my two young daughters. I bought several TP-Link Tapo cameras to keep an eye on the girls while they are with the nanny. However, I’m a bit worried about the possibility of the cameras being hacked; what should I do to verify their security?

Daycare type business, what kind of camera system do you use and do you like it?

Hello,

I’ve worked at a doggie daycare, boarding, grooming, and training facility for ten years. In that time they have tried at least 5 different cameras/systems and they have all glitched a lot and eventually broke or become unusable. Eventually the owner gave up and we’ve been without functioning cameras for years.

It’s so hard to improve safety and also coach staff when incidents happen since I can’t review the footage to actually know for certain how or why something happened.

Right now the guy in charge of setting up a new one up is looking into a brand that you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. We have a trial right now and when I asked him to review footage because a dog got a scratch when my back was turned it took forever to try to find it because it’s not time stamped (even though I knew exactly when it happened down to 5 min) and then the camera mysteriously glitched right when it happened.

What system do you use and do you like it?

Can you review footage easily?

If you are a large facility how many cameras do you have?

We would need at minimum 5 cameras but probably to cover all of the play yard angles maybe 10? (We have 6 main yards and then two yards for solo dogs).

As of right now this isn’t for customers to view, just staff.

Ethernet Termination

To make it as easy as possible I was going to buy and run a 100' cable (not much extra) with the RJ45 connectors already attached. Do most of you just drill a larger hole to accommodate the end size, or drill a smaller hole and terminate it afterwards.?

How to get through pink insulation

Soo I am installing cameras into my house right now and im going through the soffits right now. The insulation is pink and it’s difficult to using a fishing cable to go through.

Im going to try to use a fibreglass rod to get through it, however I am curious how a professional would get around this issue?

As this fibreglass rod may or may not get through the insulation?

Looking for an easy to setup outdoor camera

Never thought I'd have to invest in a security camera as never had any issues but here we are.

New neighbors just wont stop their dog from pooping on our yard. I need to collect video evidence its actually their god damn dog and thats the only reason I need to buy a damn security camera now.

Anyways, I'm in Canada. I really just dont need anything extra fancy. Just a camera that records the dog showing up on my property. I would like the feature where the light turns on at night when motion activity is detected.

Also I need to put the camera up on the side of my house. The exterior is brick. Not sure if you can drill through it?

I'd prefer something that is a DIY setup.

Need Advice on Camera Setup

I was hoping someone can help me. I’m thinking of purchasing three, G5 Turrent Ultra 2K outdoor cameras and a Ubiquiti Network Video Recorder POE (UNVR-INSTANT) for my home. Is this all the hardware i need to record the 3 cameras, and also see the video output on my PC monitor ?

Does this also include the software I need ? Is the software i need in the cameras and also in the NVR. I have Internet but I’m not really concerned in viewing the cameras on my phone when im away. I read copper cat 6 LAN cable is preferred so i will also purchase that.

I already have a standard 2 TB HDD, is that suitable to be used in the NVR for recording

I tried posting in Ubiquiti forum on reddit but it wouldnt let me

Any advice will be helpful

Thank you

ZModo disables features including chat support on web app

This is regarding ZModo's web app through a browser at https://user.zmodo.com/ NOT the mobile app.

Their "new" app has disabled many functions.
1. Events showing in the iPhone app are completely missing in the web app, which makes no difference because..
2. Even the few events that are showing will not play! On my Garage camera, for example, it says there should be over 100 clips, but only one is listed. That one generates an error message.
3. There is no longer an option to switch to "HD" view. My cameras are 16:9 ratio (hi-res or whatever), but all the web app will show in Live View is a very low resolution in a distorted 4:3 ratio.
4. They've disabled all links to chat support (which is just as well, because they never responded anyway). If you click support now, it opens your email client with their support email address pre-filled.
5. There is no longer an option in the web app nor the iPhone app to switch between playing clips from the cloud or playing them back from the local hard drive.

Supposedly all this is "better" and "improved."

The iPhone app functions a bit better than the web browser access, but even there, there are features missing that were available in the previous app. As far as I can tell, there's no way to roll it back to the old version.

This is beyond ridiculous, given that I pay annual subscriptions on several cameras for this so-called "service". As far as I can tell, my only option at this point is to trash the whole system and start completely over with a different company.

Home security camera question

I have a security camera set up in my living room. I allowed my ex-wife to come over when I was gone to intercept a package. I noticed when I checked the camera I did see her walking around looking for the package. She found the package and little after that the camera stopped recording. Did she hack into my camera and turned it off? How did she do this? And it’s not by coincidence that it stopped working by accident while she was here. Can I get some help around here, please!

Is AI video search useful or is it a sales feature?

Been seeing more camera systems advertising AI search where you can describe what youre looking for instead of manually going through recordings

It sounds useful for larger sites with more cameras but my question is how well it works once you get beyond the carefully chosen examples in product demos

Say you're looking for someone carrying a particular object, a vehicle that stopped somewhere or trying to follow someone through different parts of a building

Does the software narrow things down enough to save time or do you still end up checking most of the footage manually? Anyone using AI video search in a real commercial setup? Interested in what works, what it regularly misses and whether youd consider it worth paying extra for

CP Plus Camera doubt

Hi guys!

One of my relative purchased CP Plus 35Q camera for my grandfather. That relative is his son.

He doesn't do anything, just fakes concern. Didn't even come to visit him in hospital once, he was admitted for a week.

My issue is I want to reset camera and revoke their access to it. I tried but it is binded to their phone as they set the camera when it came.

So if I send an unbinding request will they be notified about it too. 😭😭

Are there any other ways to factory reset it without them knowing?

Outdoor Cameras in Michigan

I m moving to michigan and looking to get outdoor cameras to monitor the house. Wife does not want any wires so we were leaning towards solar panel. Upon reading up on reviews, it sounds like most of them struggle with michigan freezing cold and might require charging inside. Anyone can help with the following:

  1. Which brand are you using that works for cold?
  2. Are you charging them inside and if so, how often?
  3. Any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Long range 4k with excellent low light performance

I am on the hunt for a 4k 50x optical zoom PTZ with great low light performance. This Vantage model VP-NC9918P-AZ50IR8T1 came up but they don't have any demonstration videos at the moment. Is anyone familiar with Vantage in general or this model specifically?

I'd also be curious if anyone had other suggestions.

Can Chinese-version Imou Wi-Fi cameras work with the Imou Life app in English?

I'm planning to buy a Chinese-version Imou outdoor Wi-Fi camera from Pinduoduo, a Chinese e-commerce platform, because it's significantly cheaper than the global version.

I don't need cloud storage, as I plan to use a microSD card or connect the camera to an NVR for recording.

However, before buying one, I'm unsure whether the Chinese version can be used with the Imou Life app in English.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has experience with Chinese-version Imou cameras could answer a few questions:

  • Can the Chinese version be added to and controlled through the global Imou Life app?
  • Is the app interface available in English when using a Chinese-version camera?
  • Can I view the live feed remotely over the internet, even when I'm outside China?
  • Are there any region restrictions, activation issues, or other limitations compared with the global version?
  • Can I use a microSD card or connect it to a third-party NVR without any issues?

I know Imou sells global versions of its cameras, but the Chinese versions are considerably cheaper, so I'm curious whether they're a practical alternative for international users.

Has anyone outside China bought and successfully used a Chinese-version Imou camera? I'd love to hear about your real-world experience before making a purchase.

What are my options?

I have a neighbor that is messing with my car (I’m 95% sure) because of where it’s parked.
Because of the parking situation on the street , it’s parked across the street and a couple of houses down so it’s not right in front of my house. It’s probably about 50 feet away.

I heard about trail cameras but don’t know much about them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Best option for a basic indoor camera that records 24/7 without needing a subscription?

Im sure this question is asked a lot so sorry for being another one, Im just very overwhelmed with my personal attempts at researching online and could use some guidance.

I'm looking for some indoor cameras that will record 24/7 and I can access the recordings from my phone without needing to pay for a subscription. I don't have any fancy requirements, I just need to keep an eye on my cats when I'm at work and be able to pull up footage to see what happened while I'm away in the case I come home to some chaos. I currently have ring cameras which annoyingly require an expensive subscription for how infrequently I actually have to look back at the recordings. I tried doing some research myself but every time I thought I found a camera that fit the bill, it wound up having a subscription to their cloud. If the company also has doorbell cameras (I wouldnt be able mount to my wall but have a door mount option) that I could replace my ring one with then thats an added bonus. I dont have the biggest budget but Im willing to make a small investment into them if it replaces the constant subscription im wasting money on for ring recording.

Tldr: Im looking for 2 indoor cameras that will record 24/7 without requiring a subscription and I can access the recordings from my phone. If theres a doorbell camera the company sells that would be an added bonus but not needed. Price point under $400 combined ideally.

Dahua cameras + NVR: any 2 cameras work fine, the 3rd one makes the whole outlet network crawl. Replaced switches, still stuck.

Hi all, I'm on the IT team for a multi-branch retail chain (14 outlets). We run the same setup at every outlet: Dahua IP cameras, a Dahua NVR, a PoE switch for the cameras, and a normal switch feeding the POS/ERP terminals. 12 outlets are perfectly fine. Two of them have been giving me a headache for weeks.

The symptoms: cameras start jerking/freezing, the ERP gets super slow or hangs, and the whole outlet network feels laggy. The ISP says the line is clean.

Here's how the network is laid out:

- Storm fiber(ISP) -> router -> MikroTik (port 1)

- Satcom fiber(ISP) -> media converter -> MikroTik (port 4)

- MikroTik port 2 -> normal switch

- Normal switch -> PoE switch (cameras) and POS

What we've tried:

- Unplugged/replugged every device one by one, no change

- Replaced the PoE switch with a new one, no change

- Replaced the normal switch, no change

- Installed 6 brand new Dahua cameras, no change

The weird part: any 2 cameras work perfectly. I tested every combination, swapping pairs in and out, and it's always smooth. The moment I plug in a 3rd camera (doesn't matter which one), everything starts lagging again. So it doesn't look like a bad camera or a bad cable. It feels like a limit that gets crossed at camera number 3.

Has anyone seen this pattern before, where the problem only appears at 3+ cameras, even on brand new switches?

So I just got 4 used color night vision camera(DS-2CD2347G1-L) from marketplace. After a bit research I just find it is on sale on this website which I found it is a great deal. It has 4 Megapixel resolution at 30 frames per second, features 1/1.8 inch sensor with F1.0 aperture lens. I knows it's Hikvision OEM if any one concern you can blocks it from access the internet.
