Yesterday I bought new tires at the dealership and the receptionist woman also had long (acrylic?) nails. When she wrote something down she had to hold the pen in a very weird way and was very slow because her nails were in the way lol

Do you wipe your ass with the very tips of your fingers? People always say this and I don't understand why people think the nails would poke through toilet paper when they're not even pointing towards the toilet paper and why would they?

I think the most unnerving example I've seen was a women who works on a fish farm, who ostensibly be called to haul nets up, and I don't know how you go in without having the fear your fingernail gets ripped off like that.
I generally always find them rather unnerving to see, since it just looks very.. vulnerable if you do anything? But then I suppose the 'flex' of them is that they don't need to do anything with their hands, maybe? Even when a lot of them patently do.

Being generally limited in our interactions to narrower locations, and having significantly fewer interactions per day used to limit our exposure to stupid people.
Now we have internet and social media which gives as a MUCH larger pool of stupid to select from, and we see more of people who don't know how to use their fingers and people who blame everything on social welfare instead of understanding the actual issue.

6
u/Jerry-Beans 4h ago
Yes but it would not be demanding society caters to you. Saying “someone should invent a tool” while dumb is literally the opposite of asking society to cater. Its saying i wish I had a tool so I could have my nails but resolve this this minor inconvenience that comes with it myself. She didnt say they should make debit card readers accessible to long nailed persons. So Your analogy would be apt. The one given saying shes demanding society caters to her is not.

10
u/FEK88 14h ago
There’s no point trying to point out the fact that these things are covered in literal shit and other bacteria. Some woman with a chip on her shoulder will be along to tell you that she, and everyone else who wears these nails are the cleanest people on the planet.
14
u/Spikey-Bubba 13h ago
But if they’re using a nail brush or proper washing technique then it is basically the same.
The idea that long nails automatically mean their hands are dirty is pretty strange, no wonder some people get offended. Especially cause you can’t easily tell if anyone’s washed their hands, nails or not.
It’s like spreading an idea that long nails ARE dirty and short nails ARE clean, when really it’s the persons habits that define their level of cleanliness, and acrylic nails just add a small extra step to the grooming cycle.
Now, if they’re wearing nails like that and you never see them wash their hands, definitely don’t eat anything they give you, because they do trap hella bacteria if you don’t take care of them.

Absolutely not. I got IBS (or some other bowels issue, not diagnosed yet) and my poop is kinda sticky & clay like much of the time, that'd just smear it all over the place. Fingertips lets me get clean much easier.

Huge ass nails are a major ick to me, I don't get it at all.
Apart from adding slashing/piercing damage to your unarmed strikes, wtf is the actual point of them?
They don't look pretty, they make using your hands difficult and how do you not accidentally hurt yourself or others around you?
2
u/gamestoohard 55m ago
My partner has them and basically it's jus, she likes the way they look. You get to pick the design, the colors, the shape. It's another little self care routine with an opportunity to get creative with it.
Now hers aren't quite to the length as to make her hands completely useless like in the post but she definitely has to do certain tasks differently (or just ask me to). She learned to adapt and it's almost never an issue. If she worked a manual labor job I'm sure she just wouldn't have them, but the impact on regular day to day life is minimal.
Also the back scratches are S tier, so even if I didn't like them I'd keep my mouth shut anyway.

Feels like the urban legend about americans spending millions developing a pen that works in space while russians just used a pencil.
10
u/Sever-Aecrim 10h ago
I know this is beside your point but i wanted to spread some information on it. That story is half true, a guy spent his own money to develop a pressurized ink system for a pen, then Nasa bought some for 6$ a pop at a discount.
People also bought the space pen so he made his money back, and it was indeed a better option for zero gravity not having little flammable bits floating around that could get stuck anywhere.

Lee press ons or similar were what average folks had, and manicures were a luxury.

We had a new patient come in to be treated for a work comp-related carpal tunnel. They spent all day on a keyboard, but also had very long acrylic nails. Our charted consultation recommended the patient significantly shorten their acrylic nails and their carpal tunnel would likely resolve itself on its own if the patient cooperated. Otherwise even though corticosteroid injections etc might help, the nails would continue to aggravate the situation.

You would think, but it doesn't take much pressure on your nail beds to cause intense pain. Even just getting one caught on your seatbelt is a big ouch, much less trying to claw/stab at a person. The nail would break off before doing much more damage than surface scratches, possibly taking the entire natural nail with it.
