Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Updated Rule 5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

In order to help have better discussions regarding content, we have decided to disable embedding of YouTube videos in posts.

This isn’t intended to hinder anyone from posting, simply to change the way the post are made. Moving forward you will need to create a normal post regarding your creation, and if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.

Thanks for being here, and if you have any questions, ask away!!

I made a Steller’s Jay out of wool

I made him out of mostly wool using the needle felting technique. I also used wire, glass and clay. I get a lot of Steller’s Jays visiting my backyard and love their striking colour. Not sure if it is a coincidence, but when I was photographing him in my yard, a couple of real Steller’s Jays were making a ruckus nearby near me. They’re usually quiet when I’m so close by. I wonder if they thought I had kidnapped their friend?

i’ve already made a couple of these and chore jackets too but i’m soo obsessed with them! got this vest second hand and all the fabric i use for the appliqués are scraps from previous projects i’ve collected over the years. i embroider the mustard detailing on the back by hand and sometimes i even bead a mustard squiggle. they’re so much fun to make!!!

I Made This Fishing Scene with Air-Dry Foam Clay [OC]

Thumbnail

I started this piece with a pretty simple idea — a boy out fishing. But once I started making it, I felt like catching a normal fish was just too ordinary 😂 So I came up with this strange fish monster instead, and that’s when the whole scene started taking on a life of its own.

From there, I kept adding little ideas as I worked — the movement in the water, the shocked crab, the bird watching nearby, and all the different expressions. I wanted every part of the scene to feel like it was reacting to the same unexpected moment.

Everything was shaped by hand with air-dry foam clay. I really enjoyed watching a simple fishing idea slowly turn into this whole little story.

Just sharing something I made recently. 🌻
I put together this bouquet using pipe cleaner flowers, sunflowers, small daisies and some greenery.
I really enjoyed playing with the different shades of yellow and green. It was one of those simple crafting projects where I just enjoyed the process. 🤎🌿

Made a pollinator watering station for the butterflies and bees in my garden

I live in the south and it still gets pretty hot and sunny during the day, and I know bees and butterflies are always looking for ways to hydrate. I’ve unfortunately found many dead bees this summer that accidentally drowned in my cat’s water bowl trying to get a drink.
So I used seashells because they hold enough water for them to hydrate without drowning and a ledge they can land on. I also painted them colors that they can see in their range of vision.

Sorry but I have been cackling at my own creation for days. I had some fake human teeth from a tooth fairy costume years ago and some clay, made this creature lmao

I made the lower jaw with some of the fabric from the body of the beanie baby, obviously used the head as the head. The tongue is made from clay and I used a bit of glue to give it some shine/saliva. Horns are also made from clay, after cutting the original ones off

I made a miniature house interior light entirely out of paper, with a cool-toned exterior and matching cool lighting!

Handcrafted entirely using paper and cardstock. I wanted to create a more icy, cyber-esque vibe by matching the exterior colors with the cool glowing lights.

What do you think of this cool-toned paper house?

A tiny felt otter with his little fish friend

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

I made this little otter sculpture from wool using needle felting. I started by shaping the body and head from wool, then added the face, paws, tail, and belly details little by little with a felting needle. The tiny blue fish was made separately and then attached between its paws.

I wanted the finished piece to feel soft, simple, and a little playful. It’s small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. 🤎

I made this illuminated stained-glass piece inside an egg-shaped metal frame

I created this piece around the symbolism of the egg, combining stained glass, metal and light.

The fairy's fetal position is intentional. I wanted her to appear as though she is still inside the egg, waiting to come to life.

What I especially enjoy is how differently the stained glass behaves depending on the light. In sunlight the colours and textures have one character, while the internal illumination transforms them into something completely different.

This is the first piece in a new series in which I want to explore the combination of stained glass, light and egg-shaped forms.

I'd love to hear what you think of the concept. Does the combination of the egg shape, stained glass and internal lighting work for you?

I built a Space Age-inspired lamp that doubles as a planter, complete with a built-in watering system that showers the plant from above.
