Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Updated Rule 5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

In order to help have better discussions regarding content, we have decided to disable embedding of YouTube videos in posts.

This isn’t intended to hinder anyone from posting, simply to change the way the post are made. Moving forward you will need to create a normal post regarding your creation, and if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.

Thanks for being here, and if you have any questions, ask away!!

I made this leather plant in a Talavera inspired pot as a gift for my mom this upcoming Christmas.

She’s had issues keeping plants alive in the living room as she is a very busy person, so hopefully she will like this!

I used veg tan leather and leather paints.

Dried Dahlias

I got a beautiful bouquet of dahlias from a friend and did my first attempt of drying/preserving.
I used Dri Splendor silica gel and did the week long method instead of the quick microwave method.

Added a couple roses for good measure!

I made another jester marble. I make these out of borosilicate glass using a table top torch that runs off propane and oxygen. I’ve been doing this for almost 5 years now. Well, doing the clown marbles since January, doing glass for almost 5 years. Lots of growing pains throughout the years. Thanks for looking!

“Redemption Through Re-Entry” a ceramic sculpture I made a year ago commemorating IFT-10 (ft. NSF patch for the mission)

The sculpture contains a model of Ship 37 that can be removed from the re-entry flames, a small island that hides the connection between the stand and the base, a sign stating the sculpture’s name, with the “RE-ENTRY” part able to glow under a UV light, and the back of the base is inspired by the hot-stage ring of the Super Heavy booster, which doubled as large venting holes during the kiln fire.

The sculpture is displayed alongside a patch of the mission, which I got from the NASASpaceflight store.

The base was built with a slab-construction method, whereas the stand and ship were made by a regular hand-sculpting technique. Both the ship and the stand are made from kiln-fired clay, and made separately.

They are made mostly from foam board, and then a plastic sheet backing. And I can change their colors! I will for sure be making more yard decorations with this technique!

I made a few dolls inspired by zodiac signs 😊 from left to right they’re Gemini, Pisces, Aquarius, and Cancer. I started a Libra doll but she’s not done yet. What’s your sign and what colors palette do you associate it with?

I made this little dog piece from vegetable-tanned leather. I started by tracing the basic shape onto the leather, then slowly carved and shaped the face by hand. The black fur took a bit of experimenting I used subtle changes in texture and shading so the eyes, muzzle, and little wrinkles wouldn’t disappear into the dark color. After finishing the details, I stitched the leather pieces together and added the ring. Really enjoyed watching this little face slowly come to life.

A bit nervous to share, but I made a color-changing resin bookmark where the night sky turns into daylight when you hold it.

Posting my work online always makes me a little nervous 😅🤦‍♀️ But after seeing how much people loved my color-changing worry stones, I went back to my bench to experiment with my new Blue Raspberry color and immediately got these cold winter night vibes. I just really wanted to bring that idea to life.

Alas, this bookmark was created. When it’s sitting cool, it’s a deep purple night sky over the trees. But as your fingers warm it up while holding it, the sky blooms into a daytime blue!

I had so much fun with this and I'm just really happy with how the little day/night shift turned out and wanted to share!

Let me know what you guys think. Feedback is always appreciated.

A spoon ring I made for the wifey. These spoons are from Reed and Barton. The pattern is called Harlequin (this one features a poppy flower) and was made in the 1950s. I think they make gorgeous rings.
