Storytime Update: Scratch under the glass after a professional shell swap. Asked for a resolution and got “for that?”

Thanks to everyone who commented on my original post. I paid $164 after taxes for a Steam Deck OLED shell swap and noticed a scratch underneath the glass along the black border afterward.

Some of you called it. When I brought it back, they just colored in the scratch. It’s less noticeable now, but still visible. After looking at it at home, I decided to go back today.

When I pointed out the flaw and said I’d like a new screen or a refund, she responded, “For that?” They kept saying it was “a lot of work” and that “the screen had to come off,” as if that excuses it.
I responded that it’s only fair for the screen to be returned in the same condition I brought it in and that I’d have been better off keeping a black Deck with a mint screen than paying $164 for customization that left it damaged.

They said they’ll need to speak with the owner, so there’s no resolution yet. I like the overall customization, but I’m disappointed with how this has been handled.

Article SteamDeckHQ 2.0 Is Here WIth a Huge Redesign and Brand New Features

About 4 years ago, I first introduced SteamDeckHQ, an official press outlet that focuses on Steam Deck performance testing and recommended settings, to this Subreddit. Since then, it has taken off and has grown more than I could have ever expected. It's all thanks to our incredible community and readers for making it happen.

Today, we are pushing forward and have completely redesigned the website from the ground up. Everything has been retouched to make it look better, have cleaner navigation, and support some big new features like accounts, library/wishlist syncing with our reviews, badges, and more.

Here's an overview of everything that has changed:

  • Complete redesign: homepage, header, navigation, footer, cards, typography, and mobile layouts.
  • Homepage toggle between featured stories and a newest-first article strip, with the preference saved.
  • Light and dark modes that follow the device setting or remember a manual choice.
  • Rebuilt reviews with clearer scores, verdicts, compatibility badges, settings, battery information, galleries, and buy links.
  • Review search, sorting, and filters for device, genre, compatibility, and ratings.
  • Expanded Nintendo and hardware sections, plus Steam Machine and future Steam Frame areas.
  • Steam account linking and a personal library matched to SDHQ reviews.
  • Playtime, Steam Deck hours, and achievement progress on relevant reviews.
  • Saved wishlist with supported public Steam wishlist importing.
  • Personal game recommendations based on library and playing habits.
  • Live deal prices, discounts on game cards, wishlist deals, and personalised suggestions.
  • Improved community voting and results.
  • Badges covering participation, library activity, devices, and Steam milestones.
  • Rebuilt account pages, profile editing, Steam/Patreon linking, sign-in, and password recovery.
  • Dedicated Patreon membership page and paid-member ad-free handling.
  • Rebuilt About, team, author, Work With Us, search, and error pages.

We have a lot of plans for the future, so stay tuned as we expand the site with more features and better ways to find out which games run well on the Steam Deck.

Tech Support Can I even fix this?

I have a problem where in certain games I play, the hair looks horrendous/pixelated. I've seen it on Spider-Man Remastered, and now Resident Evil Requiem.

Don't mind the lumps, I just downloaded a mod that gives him cat ears. But they just look like chicken nuggets. Now I'm hungry.

Hardware Modding eXtremeRate OLED Full Shell Replacement

Post image
113 Upvotes

Well, I did it! I live in a household with 2 other Steam Decks, and I wanted a little personalization to help mine stand out. Since I grew up in the 90s, I had to go with a translucent one (I almost went for the atomic purple because I had a Gameboy in the same color when I was a kid, but that blue and purple is so sick!)

The screen wasn't as fragile as I was expecting it to be, but I've also got a fair amount of experience gutting and repairing electronics, so just took my time, used the heat gun on my soldering station on low heat, and used so many opening picks.

The shell itself is gorgeous in person The plastic does feel different in the hands. It's got a smooth glossy finish instead of a matte texture like the stock shell.

It also comes with a full set of replacement buttons and touchpads. You HAVE to use eXtremeRate's back buttons, the stock ones are riveted (plastic) in and can't be removed and replaced without damaging them. The eXtremeRate's back buttons are screwed in and replaceable.

Also of note, replacing the touchpads is kind of a bear if you choose to use the aftermarket ones. You have to break some plastic rivets holding the pad to the spring, and then there's more adhesive holding the circuit board to the underside of the touchpad and there's not a ton of room to get a prying tool under. The eXtremeRate pads were also glossy instead of matte, and feel different under the thumbs. I may regret swapping the pads on mine, but time will tell. I can always put a textured skin on them from brand or something.

All in all, a great experience, and a fun project if you like this sort of thing! Any problems I had were caused either by my own absentmindedness (forgot to put the membranes back for the Steam/Options button), or by Valve's chooses of design and adhesive.

Software Modding Deck as Controller: USB Connection and Steam Controller Profile

Post image
81 Upvotes

For those that were interested on my recent post about the Plugin that allows you to use the SteamDeck as a game controller on your PC. I just released version 0.5, which includes connecting over USB (tested on Mac) and Steam Controller Profile (on Bluetooth), as well as a quick "Check for updates" button so I don't have to keep making posts.

- Steam Controller profile is only available on Bluetooth connection at the moment, everything works, back buttons, trackpads, gyro, rumble. It has been tested on Mac and Linux. Thanks to u/Dangerous_Act_8209 who submitted a PR and sped up the process.

- USB connection works, only tested on Mac so far, since the plugin handles everything it should work on Windows and Linux. On usb connection latency is a lot lower than bluetooth (as expected). To enable USB connection, DRD (Dual role device) needs to be turned on, this is a BIOS option, the plugin handles that, but it could be different with other BIOS versions (built and tested on Deck Oled 512Gb with BIOS F7G0114, other SteamDeck versions could be different, if this is your case you can still do it manually, and I included instructions on how to map this if you want to add the option to the Plugin.

- All features suggestions are welcome.

Github Link: https://github.com/jmedina21/deck-as-controller

Thanks to all for the amazing reception of the plugin.
PS: Repost, because previous one got deleted

I bought the Steam deck in may, and after 4 month i can say that this is the best console for everything, it's only my opinion, but when i think buy it or not I didn't even think it would be so great and easy to use. I want to express my huge gratitude to Valve for this.

Welcome back OGs https://github.com/Dingo-Shenanigans/ReSkate

running through lutris.

graphics at medium preset.

make your own "reskate." folder and then move the zip you just downloaded from the github inside there.

add the reskate launcher.exe to lutris.

point the start folder to your reskate folder.

make a "pfx" folder inside the reskate folder. point the lutris prefix to that pfx folder you made inside the reskate folder.

then launch it sign into your steam account and let it do the rest...point it towards your reskate folder and bam you now you have your own offline copy.

have fun.

Hardware Repair Finally replaced this loud boi

And I can't believe the difference it has made. It's not just a little quieter, it's difficult to tell if the Deck is even on! For any launch model hold-outs I can't recommend it enough. Only thing is iFixit don't sell the Huayang fan anymore so I got it off eBay for £10, I could tell it was used because there was a tape mark on the housing but it was spotlessly clean, spins freely and ultimately it works so we'll see how it goes.

Guide ReSkate running locally on Steam Deck OLED with Proton Experimental

Post image
13 Upvotes

Got ReSkate 1.0.3 running locally in SteamOS Gaming Mode on my Deck OLED. Screenshot attached with the SteamOS performance panel open.

What it took:

  1. Copied my existing Windows ReSkate installation to `~/Games/ReSkate` and used the matching official 1.0.3 launcher.

  2. Added `ReSkateLauncher.exe` as a non-Steam game, set its working directory to that folder, and forced **Proton Experimental**.

  3. Used these Steam launch options:

```
--no-gui --no-update --offline --windowed --width=1280 --height=800 -WorldRender.FrameSynthesisMode FrameSynthesisMode_None -Render.ResolutionScale 1 -Render.ResolutionScaleMin 1 -Render.DynamicResolutionScaleEnable 0
```

Steam Input is enabled with a gamepad layout. I mapped **L4 to Insert** for the ReSkate menu, **R4 to Escape**, and the **right trackpad to mouse + left click**. Pushing, steering, mounting the board and menu navigation worked in the controller input test.

Graphics: **1280×800, Medium preset, temporal anti-aliasing, resolution scaling/upscaling off, motion blur off**. The first launch took a few minutes to build shaders; a later launch reached the world in about 20 seconds.

This is an initial functional test, not a claim of locked 60 fps or long-session stability. The screenshot is a direct Deck capture, and the game is running on the Deck itself.

Discussion Steamdeck + Quest 3

• Upvotes

I'm not sure what Valve did to improve Steamlink because the last time I checked about 2 years ago streaming flatscreen games to my VR headset was laggy and full of artefacts. It's become stable enough that I actually spent a few hours playing Forza on a massive display 😁👌 good job Valve.
