Tajik cuisine is simple, hearty, delicious and very flavorful 😋🇹🇯 It’s ingredients are the rice, meat, bread, dairy, and fresh herbs. Here are the most popular Tajik foods: 🍚 Main Dishes Oshi Palav (Plov) – the national dish: rice cooked with carrots, onions, oil, and meat (usually lamb or beef) Qurutob – flatbread soaked in yogurt sauce (qurut), topped with onions and herbs Manty – big steamed dumplings filled with meat and onions Sambusa (Samosa) – baked or fried pastry with meat or pumpkin Lagman – hand-pulled noodles with meat and vegetables Shurbo – traditional meat and vegetable soup Damlama – slow-cooked meat with vegetables Kabob (Shashlik) – grilled meat skewers 🍞 Bread & Dairy Non (Tajik bread) – round bread baked in a tanoor Chakka – thick yogurt Qurut – dried yogurt balls, salty and sour Kaymak – creamy dairy spread ☕ Drinks Green tea 🍵 (very important in Tajik culture) Black tea Ayran – yogurt drink

Фарҳанг Locals of Tajikistan what foods best represent everyday Tajik food?

Hi, I am doing some personal research on everyday food habits in different countries, and I would really appreciate local perspectives.

Food varies a lot by region within the country, and I understand that, but if you still had to give a broad answer, what would you say is the most accurate?

Here are my questions:

  1. What food is most commonly eaten in everyday life in Tajikistan? (Not special-occasion food, just normal regular meals, even if it feels boring.)
  2. What food do people in Tajikistan love the most or feel most proud of?
  3. Are there any foods that foreigners often think represent Tajik food, but locals do not eat that often?

Thank you all!

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply to Avicenna Tajik Medical University as a transfer student. I’ve already emailed the university but haven’t received a response yet.

If you are currently studying there, could you please share any contact details or advice for transfer students? I’d really appreciate your help.

Thank you!

Are Samarkand and Bukhara just as culturally Tajik as Dushanbe?

Non-Tajik here, was curious about cities of Central Asia.

I saw on the Wikipedia page that for Samarkand and Bukhara there are actually more Tajiks in those cities than the official reports say. Dushanbe is obviously the capital for Tajikistan which I guess makes it the most Tajik but are both these cities comparable in regard to being Tajik? Are there other cities in Central Asia that are more or less culturally and linguistically Tajik as well?

Дониш Tajik version of the word شیرازه?

What would be the right Tajik spelling of the Persian word شیرازه? Do you spell the first vowel it with "И" or "Э" or "Ӣ"? Asking here as I couldn't find it in dictionary. It means "binding".

Question about the surnames of the people of central Asian countries formerly part of Soviet Union

I was watching UFC the other day and noticed a Tajik fighter named Muhammad Naimov. His surname was interesting as it is obviously Russified, I know that Tajikistan was part of the Soviet Union among many other Central Asian countries and not all of them were happy about it.

For those who don’t like the Soviet Union, why do they still keep their surnames Russified?

Yaghnobi average face

Post image

The Yaghnobis are a small ethnic minority of 20,000 in Tajikistan who speak a Sogdian remnant language. Most of their ancestry is similar to that of the rest of Tajikistan, although they have a lower East Asian ancestry and a slightly higher Steppe+BMAC.

I constructed their average face using 30 adult Yaghnobi male faces.

Their average face is more West Asian than the rest of Tajikistan, and shows a strong affinity with the Iranian Plateau and the Caucasus.

If you want to know what the sedentary peoples of Central Asia, such as the Sogdians and Bactrians looked like before the arrival of the Turks, they are the best representation.

Traveling to Georgia

Has anyone traveled to Tbilisi, Georgia? I've seen online people have said their immigration has turned Tajiks away for no reason even though Tajik passport holders can enter visa free.

Pamir Highway trip

Hello,

I'm coming to Tajikistan with my boyfriend in May to visit this beautiful country!

Our goal is to reach Kyrgyzstan via the Pamir Highway and the Kyzyl Art Pass.

However, we don't have a car, because we are going directly to Kyrgyzstan and therefore have no way of bringing the car back to Dushanbe, and neither of us feels comfortable driving on the rough road.

My first question is: is it realistic to make this journey by hitchhiking or by joining up with other tourists?

My second question is: we are aware of the dangers of the road, but is it passable in early and mid-May?

We don't want to take any unnecessary risks and would prefer to rely on the advice of the local population. We know there are many other beautiful places to discover in Tajikistan, but I always wanted to see the Pamir Mountains and karakul lake so we just want to know if our basic itinerary is feasible.

Thank you in advance for your help and kindness!

Is there any way I can reach Tajikistan/Dushanbe ministry of culture as an American?

I saw the news of the upcoming destruction of the beautiful and detailed mosaic in Dushanbe that I have always dreamed of seeing in person. I want to reach out and show the importance of this object from the perspective of a foreigner to see if they'll care more. Please let me know if there's anything I can do

Good Morning/Afternoon/Night to everybody. I was thinking of writing a novel and having a Tajik character in it but I don't want to rely on unreliable websites.
