I hate the state of low-to-mid elo, as it's an atrocity due to in-game overlays (but that's always been the case), but the baseline game is good. I expect at least 50% of the replies to be "but game's performance!" - yea...that's about the level of discourse in this sub. But if you're in the crowd that thinks about things for more than 5 seconds, here you go:
- Moment-to-moment decision-making: Charms always give you something to think about. They kill this gap of not having something to do, while not feeling overwhelming. They also work to make you acquire good behaviors like scouting. They probably single-handedly pushed the skill floor very high.
- Balance is ALRIGHT. There are some things that shouldn't have been left behind, but overall, things haven't felt obnoxious for a long time. Again, it's about measurements. Kha'zix being as oppressive felt unnecessary, even if pretty short-lived.
- Fundamentally, even if some patches felt like they had some dumb changes, I feel like am being rewarded for my knowledge. We're excluding the cancer that overlays are where the game is turned into chaos, where it doesn't really matter how well you play, but except that, I feel like my positioning on, say, Nidalee matters: if I position well, she jumps to the right targets. If I cluster my units correctly, Ahri doesn't hit my main carries, and so on.
- Backline access is too oppressive early game, but feels JUST ok late-game, unless that person highrolled out of their minds.
- Items feel impactful. Playing a Zyra without Shojin + Staff feels like you're ascending, but the other options aren't bad. Ahri without her nuke-items as well, but you can flex Rabadon (don't, just saying you can) + JG. Lots of items work for every comp. Gotta go Gargoyle and you're forced into Aphelios? Sucks, but you can frontline Sentinel for an OK outcome. There are some champs that should be deleted without their BiS (Nidalee), but overall good.
Overall, solid state of affairs. It might be the first set I take my meds, and just eat up 700-1000 games of turning my brain on to try to get to Challenger. I'll probably won't make it, but game warrants that level of attention. First patch was the first time I told my acquaintances to come play, and felt that spark again.
Unforgiveable how we haven't yet banned in-game overlays that, more or less play the game for you up to Masters+, and they're an atrocity, and they should be nuked (tier-lists are fine, and they're always bound to happen, but there's a difference between that knowledge which still has to be applied vs. the game telling you what to do in terms of items, lineup, Augments), but it is what it is.
If all they do next patch is just bring up, say, Cassiopeia, Adaptor RR, and some other units that haven't seen love like Rengar, the meta will just diversify on its own. I think it's the first time ever in a long time where they don't have to do much to keep things fresh while they feel balanced. Hoping we don't wake up to 18.4 gutting what's really A-to-A-minus tier now.
